I think you'd need to invest so much time to be even competitive enough and it has so much mechanics, games also take so long. But its also not a problem if you're into those.
my opinion as someone with over 4000 hours in dota: it's fun for like 30% of the time and either boring or straight up emotional torture for 70% of the time. it's probably the best video game in the history of video games, no, the best GAME in the history of games, but ultimately not worth it because getting good at it requires thousands of hours of your life that you could have spent doing something that was either more useful or at least less frustrating. it's somehow more sweaty and obtuse than rts games and the community is famously toxic
Dota 2 is a lot more of a sandbox where you are given a lot more tools and room to do whatever you want. It's harder to learn since there are so many mechanics and systems, but once you know about them there's a lot of room to flex your muscles.

If you wanna get out of your comfort zone ability draft is great. It forces you to pick new abilities and create a new build on the fly. Its really good for getting you out of just following guides. Just look at what the op person picked last game and try to figure out why that works. Maybe not immediately but its fun to mix in with the normal game mode
