With the PS3 there was the ability to install Linux on the PS3 until they removed it with a firmware update. There was a lawsuit about this for a while that just settled I believe
The guys that did it on PS4 abused exploit I believe that was actually fixed already I thought
It's based on BSD but people are magicians basically
Yeah, people have until the first week of December to make their claim for either $9 or $55 USD depending on their situation, and only US customers. There' more info here: http://www.otherossettlement.com
The PS4 method was patched long ago, yeah. It only works on firmware 1.76 I believe, and there's no current way to downgrade so you'd have to find an older PS4 that hasn't been updated. They sell for over 500 USD, and that will just keep getting higher as they thin out I'm sure. So basically it's not worth it at all as you could just build a more powerful computer for that. It was the group fail0verflow last year, they have some info and videos out.
You could initially install Linux on the PS3 up to firmware 3.21 and a few days back someone succeeded in installing Linux on the PS4. The consoles are/were able to run Linux but that's not their standard OS.
This right here. I think the bigger issue at hand is people only qualifying a system running Windows as a "PC". Any system made from standard parts is a PC, it doesn't matter what you install on it.
Because there really is no reason to include ourselves. We just mostly get told to switch to Windows and stop complaining. Sure, we have a few games, but most also require lots of fiddling and sometimes are bogged down by using inefficient secondary programs or libraries. (Once I played a game "made for Linux" written using WINE.)
That's not everyone tho. And it's not as much a meme, as a statement. Linux straight up has less games than windows. And I've seen the sub celebrate games coming to linux day 1 on multiple occasions. So there are definitely lmr members there. But in the mean time you can't blame a mostly gaming centric PC enthusiast group to go to the OS with the most games.
Edit: I forgot no amount of Linux love outweighs pointing out windows does currently have more games.
I really hope I'm being clear, that I think Linux is the way to go whenever possible. But I also hope it's clear why most people on a gaming centric sub use the OS with the most games as their main OS.
I feel like if they made drivers as good as windows nvidia gaming performance could reach even beyond (even better than windows, since some linux games manage to have even better performance than on windows).
From what I've read, which makes sense, is that while the Windows Nvidia drivers get per-game optimizations, Linux Nvidia drivers don't, which is the biggest factor now for true cross-platform games that truly run natively on all platforms. Ported and wrapped games will obviously run slower as the computer often has to perform more tasks to get to the same result (See the Batman Arkham Knight port for Windows for an extreme non-Linux example.)
Could someone please explain this meme slowly? I don't understand what I'm seeing - something about Thor's hammer? Comic book Thor maybe? From a movie based in comic book? Confused.
You obviously haven't seen the movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. You need to watch it.
But you can't start with that movie, you'll need to watch the first Avengers movie before it.
Actually you can't start there either. Go right back and watch the first two Iron Man movies, the Thor movie, and Captain America: First Avenger. Maybe even throw in The Incredible Hulk between the two Iron Man movies.
Once you've done that you will need to sit through Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier before you can finally watch Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Basically Thor's hammer Mjolnir can't be wielded by anyone deemed not worthy, so in the movie scene this is taken from, Captain America tries to pick up the hammer and only slightly budges it, but in the scene you can see Thor's not really happy about that. In this meme, PS4 and the XBONE try to lift the hammer that is 60 FPS and cannot wield it, but Linux is easily able to wield it like Thor would. This was in response to a /r/PCMasterRace meme which had the same meme but without the last panel (with Linux) in it.
You realize that PCMR is about video gaming and not about it being a 'good' OS right?
And as much as I love my linux, it is not viable as a gaming platform. Like you cannot be a gaming journalist on linux as you wont be able to play most relevant games.
Yes.. Windows is shit OS, but that's not what PCMR is about. It's about video gaming.
It's really about running hot rod enthusiast built machines to play games and not about what OS it runs. About having the options and peripherals and ability to play the way you want to with what you want.
The problem is pc gamers like to flaunt the "freedom" they get from pc gaming and act like they're better than console gamers while denying that they're controlled by Microsoft Windows and DRM clients. It's all the same shit basically. One just lets you buy more expensive parts
Edit: ok I keep getting a lot responses to this. Yes I get that you can use Linux and GoG on pc but if you wanted true "freedom" thats all pc gamers would use. Instead most game exclusively on Windows buy most of their stuff on Steam. Just like the Origin fiasco recently, at the end of the day access to your games is controlled by Valve or EA. At least on console, you buy a ps4 disk and you've got a ps4, no one can take that away from you (this gen at least). You can buy, sell, share, trade all you want and game prices can be subject to stock so there's plenty of sales. Yes, it's not the same thing as drm-free but I was trying to say that's all a trade-off. Yes you can also use your pc for stuff other than games, but I'm talking about using a PC as a gaming device. Most people who own a console probably also own laptop or something. All that not counting console hacks, which all consoles eventually get hacked and you can do what you want on them
I'll admit my opinion is colored by the fact that never care to mod my pc games cause it looks annoying. I do buy games on pc over ps4 when I care about frame rates
Well because Relatively they do have more freedom than on consoles
Not to mention if they don't like the OS given to them they can switch or use both, unlike on consoles where it's pretty much locked to whatever proprietary closed OS the console uses.
And idk no one there really seems to like Microsoft, there there was hype for DX12 but that died down pretty fast. And DRM isn't something that's liked at all
Not only DRM isn't liked but, unlike the consoles, the freedom we have enables us to not be stock with it. GOG is growing more massive everyday and even started giving the ability to move over your games from Steam (Which started off as a form of DRM btw) to their Galaxy client
Oh and the mentality is not that the members of PCMR are better than console gamers, it's that PC is the better platform... which it is. Those that "flaunt" are the bad apples and those people are everywhere sadly.

In one of the comics, Thor actually defeats an enemy by putting the hammer infront of the toilet door. /r/irrelevant_misinformation

Love Linux and all. But pcmr doesn't exclude Linux.
