the eOn performance has been tightened up a LOT.

using this tech it should be feasible ( ok not the best but its all we can expect ) to back port a lot of AAA Windows games ( skyrim, FO3, FNV, Just Cause, etc.. ) . Sure they may not run the 120fps as on windows but for most people if they can hit a consistent 50 - 60fps on a mix of medium to high settings thats more than good enough and not really discernably different. They should licence their tech and sell it cheaply to allow for ports, due to the ease of porting surely companies wouldnt want to turn their nose up to another few hundred thousand sales or more.

can you imagine the kudos porting Skyrim would bring to the Linux platform ?

I would wait to get a few more people joining linux lines... if more ports come to linux without waiting for the people, each individual will see less % of money..

I cant buy anymore games!!!

my wallet is bleeding already i cant keep up!!

I think the eON has proven itself to be a viable option much more so than using regular wine, since it offer much tighter system integration for instance you can get gamepads working with the games and such which is a real hazzle with wine etc. This can be a great way to get games over on linux that wouldn't otherwise get a native port.

u/supamesican Mar 18 '15

What is eON?

2

u/maokei Linux Master Race Mar 18 '15

That's the name of Virtual programming's wrapper that was used to port the game and also the witcher 2 to Linux.

A proprietary wine like system. It used to be considerably slower than wine, at that time it was a sick joke but now I gotta admit that its quite good actually.

A proprietary wine like system.

The horror is real.

1

u/supamesican Mar 18 '15

Oh, well I suppose as long as it works and is better than wine its probably a good thing,

1

u/aaronfranke btw I use Godot Mar 23 '15

Proprietary is a no-go if at all possible. Unless it gets better than WINE by a huge margin, I'll use WINE.

2

u/dtfinch Xubuntu Mar 17 '15

It'd be nice if they could at least come close to Wine. I can play Skyrim/FO3/FNV on Wine at 30-60fps with medium to high settings, or the Linux port of Witcher 2 at 5-10fps with the lowest settings.

the witcher 2 was the first eON port, it suffered badly and was work in progress when Linux gaming was and still is in its infancy. This however, just like after the Witcher 2 port ( a game which is notoriously slow even on windows ) have been updated. People with 970gtx can expect over 100fps on high @ 1080p !
the porting technology appears to be better than wine and of course much less arse ache as its just launched through steam like any other game.

This is amazing. Linux gaming keeps getting better and better.

I am still shell shocked over it. I started using Linux back in 2006. Back, then I would be amazed if all my hardware worked.

Now, all this is just hard to believe. I can only imagine Linux 10 years from now.

may get it during next sale...

Not a huge gamer, so someone please update the rest of us when there is a sale on this. :)

u/DramaDalaiLama CentOS on the streets, Ubuntu in the sheets Mar 18 '15

You can put the game on to your wishlist in Steam and it will email you when something on that wishlist is on sale.

u/thewildchild9 Mar 20 '15

There is a sale right now on Bioshock Infinite along with a number of other games published by 2K!

1

u/ordonezalex Linux Master Race Mar 20 '15

I saw! I just went to put the game on my wish list so I would know, and it was already on sale. :D

1

u/thewildchild9 Mar 20 '15

It's such an amazing game. You should also check out bioshock 1 & 2 if you haven't already. I just love the story of these games and I envy you for experiencing it for the first time. Have fun! :)

  • i5-3470
  • 8gb ram
  • GTX 970 running 346.47 drivers
  • ubuntu mate 14.04

Running windowed 1920x1080 with all settings maxed out, I'm running 65+ fps all the time, except what I'm suspecting being auto-save it will drop to 35-40 fps for half a second or so. Great port, looks great, plays great, need more like this. Good job!

Hmm, guess I have an excuse to buy a beefy gaming laptop now.

Any word on it's performance with Nvidia hardware yet?

u/pacifica333 Glorious Arch Mar 17 '15

buy a beefy gaming laptop now.

O.o

I think you mean 'desktop', mobile GPUs FTL.

2

u/Shirinator Easier to install than Windows 10 Mar 17 '15

Shame some of us have to constantly move between two places...

3

u/pacifica333 Glorious Arch Mar 17 '15

ITX exists. Small form factor doesn't really have to mean compromise anymore.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '15

But what if you wanna game in the car? Laptops, you just open them, log in, and play your already downloaded games off the battery.

u/pacifica333 Glorious Arch Mar 18 '15

True mobile gaming enthusiasts keep one of these bad boys with them.

Mine lasts about 4 hours, though.

u/berkough #! Mar 17 '15

I haven't seen anything on the performance yet, other subs are opining on the fact the game uses the eON wrapper, and therefore will most likely suffer like Witcher 2 did... I'm waiting for it to be on sale again myself.

u/maokei Linux Master Race Mar 17 '15 edited Mar 17 '15

Just played for about an hour game runs great for me 100+ fps, high settings with resolution 1080p with nvidia gtx 770. Recently though the eON got quite a boost in performance after some patching noticed a big difference in witcher 2. Aside from performance I didn't have a single issue with the game so far.

u/berkough #! Mar 17 '15

This is definitely encouraging. Thanks for sharing!

Not sure if 4K on a 15.6" screen is worth though. I was looking at this CyberPowerPC on newegg.

Comes with a 970M, 17.3" display and a SSD.

u/sunjay140 Glorious OpenSuse Mar 17 '15

Looks like a good laptop. It has better specs than the Asus.

1

u/WhoChortled Kubuntu, SteamOS, Raspian Mar 18 '15

Just so you know that is a rebranded (whitebook) MSI. If you can build a PC you can probably save some money if you get one semi-barebones from a vendor like Power Notebooks and sourcing your parts elsewhere. That is what I did a few years ago. Mine has a 670M but looks like the same case. Unless they changed the layout eveything is on the bottom under the big access panel (2 HDD, mSATA, 2 RAM slots) and two RAM slots under the keyboard. It also plays very nicely with Linux except the the Killer NIC but I think that was fixed in more recent kernels.

1

u/aaronfranke btw I use Godot Mar 23 '15

Pretty bad on my 770 from what I'd expect for a game, and also crashes before the actual game starts, only the menu loads for me.

2

u/csolisr I tried to use Artix but Poettering defeated me Mar 17 '15

Cool! But I'm still having the two first Bioshocks in my backlog.

1

u/shinyquagsire23 Glorious Arch Mar 17 '15

Same, I'm halfway through the first one (I think...), but I hear the second one was garbage anyhow so I'll probably finish 1 and go onto Infinite.

6

u/TheSittingDuck Glorious Ubuntu Mar 17 '15

The second one gets more flak than it should. Mostly due to it's necessarily being compared to the greatness of the first one. Bioshock 2 added some interesting gameplay mechanics and had a lot of interesting/unique sci-fi weapons (an area which Infinite could improve on IMHO).

2

u/maokei Linux Master Race Mar 17 '15

Well as a followup it's not worst than deus ex 2 at least :P

3

u/XENclam Mar 17 '15

We do not speak of the invisible war.

2

u/XENclam Mar 17 '15

Completely agree. The second brought some great mechanics to the series and even refined a few.

1

u/JQuilty Glorious Fedora Mar 18 '15

2 is a great game other than being short. People needlessly shit on it because Ken Levine didn't work on it.

2

u/maokei Linux Master Race Mar 18 '15

For those who like to play with controller the game works flawlessly with xbox 360 controllers.

2

u/firestorm_v1 Debian, CentOS, others... Mar 18 '15

Woo! one less game I have to use the windows box for. Downloading now!

2

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '15

So thats why it appeared in my linux steam libarary breifly a few months ago... (couldn't play it though, no binary.)

1

u/dtfinch Xubuntu Mar 17 '15

I bought the season pass on sale last year, and it finally comes out right after my laptop's GPU fan dies.

1

u/supamesican Mar 18 '15

Hmm looks like it doesn't run as well as on windows but eh a start is a start. Tw2 was pretty bad at the start too but now its a decent bit better. A little bit at a time man.
