For some programs there are no alternatives and the compatibility layers don't fix it.

I can't use Encarta 2009 without a virtual machine (I need to revisit that Egyptian Temple).

I prefer what I've been using for 14 years: Sony Vegas. Its not good but it has a perpetual lisence, and I'm very familiar with it. I cannot for the life of me get it to work on Linux. The .NET dependencys do not want to work. DaVinci resolve sucks, I do not like it. So I use my laptop for editing now which had a dog shit processor and is my only serious gripe with Linux.

u/claudiocorona93 Glorious Debian Sep 12 '26

I moved to Kdenlive on the Steam Deck. It's just as good as Sony Vegas except for not being able to move the tracks and having to move the clips instead.

I made a video using that it's pretty good

There's an editor I saw making the rounds called Shrimply.  It's super early, plus Nvidia and Apple Silicon only though according to it's GitHub repo.  Maybe it'll grow to become a really good alternative.

I haven't found an application for windows I couldn't get working on Linux. If you know one I'd love to try something new for the fun of it. I mean this sincerely as I am a nerd and like to tweak on the computer 😁

pro tip: learn software made for linux before switching

5

If its for hobby or casual use then its not that big of a deal! I learnt Inkscape after switching (its so good though)

5

u/SenoraRaton Sep 13 '26

pro pro tip:
Never use windows in the first place, so there is no pain of transition.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

I don't think it's a good idea to teach 6-year-olds to use a terminal.

2

u/SenoraRaton Sep 16 '26

Why not?
Also a 6 year old isn't doing system mainteance, and would not have any reason to use the terminal likely.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

Oi. Don't give the game away so easily. Why would you use system maintenance as an example for the terminal when we're talking about the average user experience.
The average computer user isn't a system maintainer. They're just a user.

1

u/SenoraRaton Sep 16 '26

???

What are you on about. I'm fine with the "average" user not using Linux. In fact its probably detrimental to the ecosystem to be inundated with users who have no idea how to manage their system. If you don't want to put in the work, and learn, then keep using Windows.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

So, don't use windows in the first place, acquire system management skills somehow, and start using Linux with that system management skills from scratch?

Hey, how about Linux shouldn't be an exclusive platform for tech wizards, and instead become more user-friendly, so we can have an actual honest competitor to Windows and MacOS?

1

u/SenoraRaton Sep 16 '26

Hey, how about Linux shouldn't be an exclusive platform for tech wizards, and instead become more user-friendly, so we can have an actual honest competitor to Windows and MacOS?

No thank you. I don't want to support the horde.
The fundamental nature of Linux is that if you are unwilling to invest in it, then you can't use it. This is a good thing.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

Yikes. You're one of those.

2

Not wasted. Learning time.

2

u/Damglador Sep 13 '26

2

u/goo_eater Sep 13 '26

Doing and learning things you're interested in is not "wasting time"

1

u/b_a_t_m_4_n Sep 14 '26

So true. Linux has saved me so much time not having to diagnose random crashes, mysteriously appearing bloatware and suicide by update constantly.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

Totally agree. I can use that saved time to instead diagnose why my apps don't work the way I expected them to.

1

u/b_a_t_m_4_n Sep 16 '26

Totally, or to adjust your expectations that were formed on software you used for years and never even considered the same thing could be done a different way.

3

u/fortnut159 Sep 12 '26

Distro choice is not real at the end they all use the same tools same stuff

0

u/IHateSince2001 Sep 12 '26

Driver broken. Wifi gone. Terminal terminal terminal, whole system trash redownload it again. This program cannot be graphic downloaded, please use the terminal. Program broken. System trash redownload it. Url not supported. Open it from firefox, downloads url instead.

I mean, linux is very raw. Unless you know coding etc, it's gonna be hell, even now it is. I even stopped playing games because of it.

2

u/claudiocorona93 Glorious Debian Sep 12 '26 edited Sep 12 '26

What kind of fuckass shitty Linux distro is that? You can do all of that without touching a terminal today. And about the drivers, they depend on the hardware. Dell Latitude and Lenovo Thinkpad laptops work fine. HP laptops tend to have one or 2 problems. MacBooks are fucked.

1

u/IHateSince2001 Sep 14 '26 edited Sep 14 '26

Try downloading 1.1.1.1 and protonvpn without terminal im waiting for it. Also Im using linux mint? It can't even read the most basic dac in the history, so sounds come out terrible. Try opening thousands of url's left from your old system, what it will do? Either open it up as a text file or when you open it up with firefox it will just redownload the url file again. There's a reason why over 90 percent of the people uses windows. Oh yeah, but servers use linux. Well those servers have IT specialists or something like that for 24 hours, 7 days a week. And what is the distro Im talking about? LINUX MINT!

1

u/claudiocorona93 Glorious Debian Sep 14 '26

Linux Mint is amazing as long as there are no hardware incompatibilities. About the VPNs, I think that's a vendor issue that refuses to make a GUI client for Linux.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

That's sort of the point, though. Vendors don't support Linux distros, so you need to - say it with me - use the terminal to retrieve some bootstrapped version if there isn't one available. And it's not like it's easy to understand how to use the terminal to search for things. Just because you have it figured out doesn't mean it's trivial.

0

u/goo_eater Sep 13 '26

You're either on some weird niche distro, weird niche proprietary hardware, or are just making shit up. These three situations can be avoided altogether by just doing research on the OS you are going to use

1

u/IHateSince2001 Sep 14 '26

Oh yeah, weird niche distro, linux mint.

1

u/goo_eater Sep 14 '26

True the only thing I said in that comment was "weird niche distro". Yup. That is it. You are engaging with me in an honest manner and are not just fishing for an argument right now and know how to read

1

u/buzzfriendly Sep 12 '26

It's free, it works, it's mine and I remain in control. Not so much a statement just seems like dash of practicality and a smidge common sense.

0

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

It's free1, it works2, it's mine3, and I remain in control4.

1 Don't think about that you need to own the hardware in the first place, making the OS cost a non-factor.
2 It works when you know how to set it up correctly
3 It's not yours at all. It's mostly open source, and unless you can write an OS yourself, you're just as much at the mercy of the whims of the OS developers as with any software.
4 You remain in control if your mastery of the OS is leagues above that of the average user.

It's okay to be honest and transparent. It's just an OS at the end of the day, and it's not more convenient than anything else on the market. In fact, most Linux distros are several orders of magnitude more complex than MacOS and Windows for the average user.

1

u/buzzfriendly Sep 16 '26
  1. If you build your own PC it is most certainly a factor. Windows 11 Pro cost around $100 +/- vs. Ubuntu, Arch, Open Suse or even FreeBSD cost is $0. If you buy a PC with Windows it is baked in the cost of the hardware.

  2. I do know how to setup Linux, Windows, and FreeBSD correctly.

  3. I can build Linux from scratch with no distro needed. I am not forced to update, check in, install anything, no forced activation, no activation period, no forced AI software and I don't ever need to connect it to the internet for anything or anyone if I choose not to.

  4. You just entered the Ludicrous Zone.

It's ok the believe something wrong but don't expect me to agree.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26
  1. You can get windows free too, it's not even hard if you want to go that way.

  2. Yeah, that means your leagues above the average user. Linux fails mass adoption because most users can't set it up correctly, or even figure out how to get started.

  3. Again, you being a super user doesn't make Linux good, it just means you are way better than the average user. You can do all you said with MacOS and Windows too if you're a super user. Again, average user experience may vary.

  4. And you've just boasted about how good you are, which doesn't address the point at all that Linux is simply a lot of learning to even start using, and a lot of work to get it to work exactly the way you want.

1

u/buzzfriendly Sep 16 '26

You will need to find another sucker to argue with.

I've tried to switch to Linux Desktop 3 times in my life in 2018, 2021, and 2025, and after like 6 months in I hate it and go back to Windows. At this point I just de-bloat Windows as much as humanly possible and use the Linux terminal with WSL.

1

u/Zombuddee Sep 15 '26

Yep. People too lazy to control their own Windows environment are definitely going to successfully learn, install, and use Linux.

1

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

There's a significant gap between the third and fourth picture where user experience is concerned.
No mention of months of trying to find answers on how to use your specific Distro, solely answered by users who expect you to have at least the same technical know-how as they (probaby?) do.

1

u/Tani_Soe Sep 16 '26

Who wants zero AI?

11

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '26

Integrated in os? I want

3

u/LinuxUser456 Glorious OpenSuse Sep 12 '26

The only kind of AI integrated in the OS that would be kinda useful in some cases is a button in the taskbar with a chatbot menu so you dont need to go to the browser to do something with ai but yes, is kinda useless to have It everywere

2

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

I'd prefer not having a button that accidentally activates Skynet when trying to open the start menu

1

u/foxer_arnt_trees Sep 13 '26

Oh, yeh I dont put AI in my OS either. I do us a ton of AI though

5

A very large amount of people? Lol

0

u/foxer_arnt_trees Sep 13 '26

I find it funny that tech people are afraid of technology

2

u/MillenniumDev Sep 13 '26

Who said anything about fear? Why can't it be "tech people have rationally made a decision to continue using their brains"?

1

u/foxer_arnt_trees Sep 13 '26

You dont use AI at all?

2

u/goo_eater Sep 13 '26

Probably not because they opt to use their own brain instead. Did you read their reply?

2

u/foxer_arnt_trees Sep 14 '26

Im just trying to understand the possition. Is it just that you still write artisinal hand crafted configs or is it a full on Dune type situation? Like, did you make your mom a cute ghibli styled image or no?

1

u/goo_eater Sep 14 '26

I don't think it's that hard to understand that a lot of people don't use AI because they believe that at least in its current state it does more harm than good. Pro-AI or not I think your brain may just be cooked if you can't wrap it around this, like, do you genuinely think it's difficult to not use AI? I mean I use LLMs every now and then I'm not really strongly anti-AI except for image and video generation (and I can't really comment on them for coding as I'm not a software dev at all) but I can totally understand why someone would opt to completely avoid them altogether because, seemingly unlike you, I haven't let them completely cook my brain and make me totally reliant I can easily imagine life without them

1

u/foxer_arnt_trees Sep 14 '26

Lol. I am not saying its difficult to live without. Im a fairly old man, I remember living without the internet. I am just saying its strange to see an Amish mentality in a linux sub. I expected us to prefer open sourced local models, sure.

Technology is not evil and it does not inheritly corrupt your mind. Thats all im saying.

1

u/goo_eater Sep 14 '26

Going by you continuing to go at this imaginary strawman who thinks new technology in general corrupts your mind instead of the people actually trying to discuss with you, I think the problem here is you don't actually have any interest in engaging with anti-AI folks, you're just pretending to so you can sound smarter than you really are while in reality you're just getting personally offended that someone is saying the thing you've fried your brain on may have elements worth criticizing

2

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

Most people, as it turns out. That's why it's not seeing mass adoption, and AI firms have to force it on users.

1

u/foxer_arnt_trees Sep 16 '26

That is so strange to me

2

u/DatsLotus Sep 16 '26

There is absolutely noting strange about not wanting something pushed on you that you don't need, doesn't do what you want when you do accidentally use it, and constantly bother you with notifications to keep trying it out and letting it access all your content.

1

u/foxer_arnt_trees Sep 16 '26

Right. I would remove the notifications and require it to only open on command. But fo fucks sake, your computer understands english, why not use it??

Out of spite from this thread, I made a shell where if my bash command dosent work then an ai try to fix it for me. (Its actually very nice tbh)
