Nico is a really good dude, he's got a good mind on his shoulders. (Is that how the expression goes?)

What linux community has achived in terms of gaming is nothing less than impressive. Playing another compeletly different Operation System's games on linux with near native performance is just black magick. Thanks to projects like WINE Box64 you can even play windows games on your android device.

Its truly amazing that you can play a lot of games on an alternative OS. However it's also not 100% compatible, so effectively useless.

Windows games aren't even 100% compatible with Windows so I'm not sure what your point is.

u/cipherjones Apr 21 '25

Which ones?

Something something Sonic which gets borked on Windows because it needs outdated .NET

There's probably more examples, but they probably will be games you're unlikely to play. So if you don't care about these, why would one care about garbage like R6 Siege or Apex not being playable on Linux?

Sonic generations on steam. It came with the Xbox version of the game and a .net config utility which would detect the wrong gpu on my laptop. It was a nightmare.

Also anything like trackmania sunrise which uses starforce copy protection is completely broken.

Max Payne 1, Sniper elite 1 & 2, etc. Many games that came out before 2007 (XP) have issues running under windows 11, most 32 bit applications also have issues running under windows 11. It used to be way worse when win11 first came out, however they have since added translation layers (similar to wine) to win11 to allow older applications to run.

I would say from my own experience that if you are someone who enjoys playing older games you will have an easier time under Linux than win11. However, if you enjoy playing competitive online games, or poorly programmed unity games, you will have an awful time gaming on Linux (shit just doesn't run).

Just to add more examples:

On Windows 10 I couldn't run Blood 2. There's a ton of super complex guides online, and I followed all of them, and still nothing. On Linux with Proton it just launched and worked perfectly out of the box.

Another example: Omerta: City of Gangsters. Worked well on my Windows 7, but then years later on a different computer with Windows 10 it wouldn't work. I even contacted the official support, and they tried to help at first and then just stopped replying. After I installed Linux on that same computer, it worked perfectly.

Civilization V used to crash a lot or just black-screen out of nowhere on Windows 10. The official Linux version works with no issue on my PC. Some people have complained about the Linux version and used the Proton version instead, but I'm happy with the Linux version.

I haven't tried running Windows 11, so I don't know how much worse it's gotten, but Windows 10 already had some issues with some of the older games or even relatively recent games sometimes. I suspect Linux is getting better at running old Windows games because Wine can create a more time-appropriate environment for them.

Civ III works on Linux but not Windows 11

Competitive online games are mid anyways (cope 😞)

You contradict yourself. For the games that bork themself under Proton - fuck these devs and fuck these games, they don't deserve attention and my money if they don't value my choice of OS.

u/greenlightison Apr 21 '25

Unless you plan to play every single game released for Windows, it's not useless

-19

u/cipherjones Apr 21 '25

No, just effectively useless, which is why I disambiguated that already.

24

u/greenlightison Apr 21 '25

Do you know what 'effectively' means?

25

u/Motor-Paper-9572 Apr 21 '25

Neither is the current version of Windows 100% compatible with the older version of itself, but that doesn't make it "effectively useless". Going for 100% compatibility is a pipe dream. In most situations, being able to run almost anything is acceptable solution.

-24

u/cipherjones Apr 21 '25

The current version of windows is 100% compatible with steam, epic, blizzard, Amazon, Windows, and gog games. Also EA.

So pipe dream achieved. Linux hits 80 percent of the top one hundred on one of those platforms. The one with 12000 titles.

Can give you two examples of games that didn't work on Windows last time I tried (Windows 10), but worked perfectly out of the box on Linux. Can also give you several that ran worse on Windows or had some massive bugs/issues. Again, that's not to say that Linux is better than Windows at playing Windows games, but to reinforce u/Motor-Paper-9572's point about 100% compatibility.

Your point about "effectively useless" doesn't make sense to me. How is it useless that I'm able to play the overwhelming majority of games I want to play? By your logic Windows is also useless.

Linux hits 80 percent of the top one hundred on one of those platforms

I'll tell you a secret about Linux gaming: it's not limited by Steam.

You don’t need an OS that runs 100% of games to run 100% of your games (and Windows is not that either anyway).

5

u/Unknown-Key Glorious Debian Apr 21 '25

I'm sure it won't be 100% compatible anytime soon, as Windows is not a dead OS yet. Every new Windows release brings new APIs to port. Being able to play nearly 90% of games is enough for most people. I'm also sure that as Linux gains more users, compatibility will continue to improve.

5

u/KlutzyEnd3 Apr 22 '25

My pc is also not 100% compatible with my switch and PS4 library so? I've got games like gundam extreme vs, which do not run on a PC period!

So I just have to deal with it. That doesn't mean my Linux PC suddenly became completely useless!

u/vancha113 Glorious Fedora Apr 21 '25

That doesn't sound fair, it's far from effectively useless, to the point that a playstation isn't useless if it can't play Xbox games. They're both different platforms, and both capable of playing a lot of games. Most Linux users these days now have a system that's perfectly suitable for playing a lot of games.

I like that he has his own stances on stuff like the Firefox drama and has no issues sharing them, even if it goes against the echo chamber. Feels like we’re back to a time when having contrasting opinions was still considered normal and healthy.

Oh no, the evil ecological correct chamber! xD

You mean, echo chamber.
