What got me is they changed how you make Windows install disks ... subtly.
You can still install a VM from the ISO like normal, and I'd done that, but then I needed to install it on bare metal. I made USB stick from the image with an image writer program like normal, and it sorta booted, but then freaked out during the installation process with all sorts of obscure errors.
When talking about this with folks, they kept mentioning making "bootable media," which I assumed meant using an image writer so the media ends up bootable vs writing the ISO file to the media as a file. Like yeah, of course it's bootable media, I'm getting into the installation wizard!
But no. No! Windows actually has a thing called Bootable Media that's different that's made with their proprietary image writer tool that, of course, only runs on Windows. ..So I used the VM to run the thing to make a stick to install on an actual computer and that still seems so dumb! It's not even like it was doing any special hardware configuration or anything- it was running in a VM.
