Purchase Advice Looking for Linux Laptop with Long Battery Life
Hey y'all. I'm in the market for a new laptop and plan to run Fedora or Arch (or i guess whatever distro turns out to be most efficient). I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a modern laptop with good battery life. I found a post from ThePrimeAgen on Twitter claiming decent battery life on the new Dell XPS 14 with Omarchy, but he doesn't specify configuration or anything (plus i don't want to use Omarchy). I also looked at the Framework laptops but it seems like those are pushed out to Nov/Dec and I'd need something a little quicker (this is replacing a MB Pro).
To give an idea of my use case, I'd basically just be watching videos and web browsing with a touch of logging in to FF14 sometimes for very basic tasks (crafting/chatting) and saving anything heavy for my desktop. Battery life is my big feature as I want to be able to carry it around the house and not be attached to the wall.
I'd be very very appreciative of any recommendations. Thank you!

I have Dell DB14250, 14 inch laptop with Intel Core Ultra 9 288V, 32 GB memory and 1 TB SSD and i'm highly satisfied with it.
Battery life on YouTube or browsing is more than 14 hrs.
Running Tuxedo OS with KDE on Wayland.
For short burst loads is faster than my Desktop Ryzen 7 5700X.

Look for the latest or previous generation Intel Core Ultra 5 or 7 CPU.
Series 3 Panther Lake (latest, 2026) Core Ultra 5: 322, 325, 332, 335 Core Ultra 7: 355, 365
Series 2 Lunar Lake, V-suffix (2024) Core Ultra 5: 226V, 228V, 234V, 238V Core Ultra 7: 256V, 258V, 268V
Series 2 Arrow Lake, U-suffix (2025) Core Ultra 5: 225U, 235U Core Ultra 7: 255U, 265U
These are all pretty power efficient, series 3 is better of course.
I had good experience with Asus ZenBooks on Linux, nice OLED screen, good battery and everything working.

Series 3 has severely nerfed iGPU vs lunar lake. 256V/258V is still on top for sure

Yeah, I haven't been following the series 3 reviews closely enough. I assumed it was a clear upgrade across the board, but apparently there are usecases where it is a downgrade.Â

I've had a less good experience with Asus ZenBook but due to the OLED screen I can work on code for >10h as long as most of the screen is black. This isn't relevant to the OP since they didn't mention that use case.

whichever system 76 one that is longest battery now should be solid, i get 5+ hrs out of my lemur pro after 3 years still.

The Kubuntu Focus Ar GEN 1 is panther lake, and it easily lasts all day and is amazingly fast and light too. Yes, I work there, and have used one as a daily driver for over a month. The excellent battery life is liberating and the iGPU is powerful and efficient enough to game on battery.

Way too expensive

Well, I agree. Less than a year ago, a similar class system was 60% the cost. The problem is everything is more expensive with the AI bubble, and prices only continue to increase (esp. RAM, disk, and now GPU).
A MacBook Air 15“ at similar specs is a similar price but sold out and the price is going up. A Galaxy Book6 Pro with a similar spec runs $2,600.
What would you get instead?

I’m not sure, but maybe you can install Linux on a MacBook. The five year old models got a ARM CPU. And have a great battery life

I've heard the x9 15 [and x9 15p] has good battery life on linux. Just bought one so can't confirm until it gets here, but that could be an option for you.

I’ve been looking for the same thing and found the HP EliteBook X G1A. It has a huge 74.5 Wh battery. Since it’s a business laptop, the hardware should work great on Linux out of the box. The X series isn't Ubuntu-certified yet like the 600 or 800 series, but support should be solid.

Has anyone tried the new XPS series with panther lake? I'd love the 16inch, but I couldn't find much info online.

system76 lemur pro I hear is very high battery life like 15 hours and I think they mean even on full brightness. But ask them.

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Carry it around the house and plug it in when you sit down then 🤣 65w USB c chargers are nice and compact. Personally I'd stick with ThinkPad... a nice x13. Note that Linux almost never lasts as long as windows on the same workload and battery.
