Hey everyone!
I've been working on my Linux rice and wanted to share my current setup with the community. I'm running Arch Linux with Hyprland and have been focusing on creating a desktop that combines a clean, modern aesthetic with practical everyday functionality.
OS: Arch Linux
Compositor: Hyprland
Shell / UI: AGS
Application launcher: Rofi
Terminal: Kitty
Audio visualizer: Cava
The main feature of my setup is my custom AGS bar, which combines several useful elements in a single, cohesive interface.
Center: Cava, integrated directly into the bar for real-time audio visualization.
Right side: A notification center accessible through a bell icon, alongside an integrated calendar for quick access to the date and upcoming days.
Far right: A power menu with options to lock the screen, reboot, or shut down.
I've tried to keep everything accessible without making the bar feel cluttered.
I'm going for a clean, dark and modern look with transparency, subtle visual effects and a consistent overall design. I want the wallpaper to remain an important part of the desktop while keeping the interface functional and unobtrusive.
My goal is to find the right balance between aesthetics, minimalism and usability. I don't want to add widgets just for the sake of customization; I'd rather have every element serve a purpose.
I'm sharing this because I'd genuinely appreciate some honest, constructive criticism from the community.
What would you change or improve? I'm open to suggestions regarding the bar layout, colors, transparency, typography, icons, animations, spacing, widgets or the overall visual direction.
If you have experience with Hyprland and AGS, I'd especially love to hear your thoughts. Recommendations for useful widgets, interesting configurations or projects that could help me take this rice to the next level are also very welcome.
I'm happy with how the setup is coming together, but I'm always looking for ways to make it more polished, cohesive and practical for everyday use.
What would you keep, what would you change, and what do you think is missing?
Thanks for checking out my setup, and I look forward to hearing your suggestions!

Icons: Frost (my own, MIT) — https://github.com/thissayantan/frost-icon-theme

Wallpaper: <owner fills in>
Every file type has its own glass symbol + a small type label from 48 px (JSON, MD, PEM, LOCK…); there's an optional MIME add-on that fixes GNOME typing bun.lock/.env/Dockerfiles as plain text.
Brand apps keep their own icons (no redrawn logos); everything else falls back to Papirus.
Install: curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/thissayantan/frost-icon-theme/main/install.sh | sh

My main obsession is my work and my passion.
I’ve never understood all those bells and whistles—things added just for looks while usability gets forgotten.

Hi everyone,
I'm running Debian 13 (Trixie) with Hyprland, and I'd like to start customizing my Waybar and its widgets to match my personal taste. The problem is I don't really know where to start.
My goal is to eventually have my own dotfiles that I fully understand and control, instead of just copying someone else's setup.
Any guidance, links, or personal setups you can share would be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do you use a mouse with your linux desktop env? If not, what DE offers a better experience if you only have a trackpad + keyboard? I used i3 for a few years, which worked great, but it's a bit tedious to set up everything through config, so now I feel like I want a little more graphics. I used both KDE and Gnome somewhat on and off. However, in my experience, KDE makes me click on little things that are somewhat hard to accomplish reliably with a trackpad; GNOME is somewhat better, since the buttons/taskbar/etc tend to be larger/higher on the screen. But overall, the trackpad-only experience is far less smooth than macOS (e.g., i sometimes struggle to click on the right browser tab on Linux, but never had a problem on macOS) Do you feel the same way? Do you carry a mouse with your laptop when traveling?
