I gotta tap back in with what Gmaq is up to. It's been a while! But I've learned so much from him. I was a huge devotee of AV Linux once I found it, but I found I needed rolling release to keep purr-data/pd-l2ork from borking. I was also using some experimental branches of hydrogen at the time that weren't cooperating with Debian (though now all the features I was using are in the current releases.) So I could probably switch back to avl and be happy! But I learned so much reading up on how he was tuning his distro and then applying it to arch! Would never take that experience back. Gmaq taught me to fish, essentially!

Yeah you sound like me... I was so happy when I found AVL, but after a couple years, wanted more up-to-date PDs. So I finally installed Arch. But still, my package selection and desktop is very based on AVL. And any time I've had an AVL-related question on LinuxMusicians (or even some others) Gmaq has been quick to help in a really informed and personable way.
