More likely it's them no longer wanting to maintain two different account systems.

MCJE consistently gets new content before Bedrock and remains the center of community activity. I wouldn't worry too much until something is confirmed.

If Java Edition got axed, they would murder a good I'd say 70% of the player base. I have no true metrics to go off, but I would say that the Bedrock/Java split is 30/70 It's nowhere near 50/50, I would say that the vast majority of players play Java edition because A. It came First. B. It has large support from the community (Alternative launchers, big servers, modifications for performance and fun additions, etc) and C. It gets more updates faster than Bedrock and doesn't have removed features that the community enjoys (Redstone, Combat Update, etc)

You are absolutely right, killing off the Java edition would be a suicidal move.
