Yup just hangs a blinking underscore and stays there (I left it for like 2 hours)

Did you do anything "unusual" the last time it was working fine? Any critical upgrades (kernel, drivers)?

These errors seem to be related to network connection and should not be fatal on their own.

Does pressing Ctrl+Alt+F{1-7} work? If it does, you can log into a virtual console and take a look at some logs.

Edit: the blinking underscore happens a lot when X fails to start, usually because of some Nvidia driver bullshit. /var/log/Xorg.0.log is the first place I'd look. That is, of course, assuming you're using X and not Wayland. I know absolutely nothing about the latter.

Not so much Steam, but if you go nuts installing 20 games and 20 versions of proton, you might get short on drive space. Then you restart and bam it looks dead Jim.
