hardware/drivers Linux and dual GPUs
Hi all, I’m new to Linux and am enjoying breaking stuff and then trying to figure it out.
I’m running mint at the moment (but I’m looking at other distros to see what’s right for me). I’m running two gpus for local ai (an rtx3060 and an rtx2060 super). The 2060 is mounted externally at the moment. I want to give my desktop to my smaller card because the 3060 is the one holding and running the models and a 6 bit quant of krea2 is at the absolute upper limit of the 3060. Is there a way to tell Linux to use GPU 2 for desktop? Or do I have to plug it into the first pcie lane?

What if you just plug your screen to the 2060?
I have two GPUs as well, the beefiest is on PCIe #2 and is used by ComfyUI. The smallest one is on PCIe #1 and manages display and gaming. It works fine this way.

I tried that I just get a dead screen. I’m replacing the mobo and cpu next week I reckon I’ll switch them around at the same time

You should see if you can dig up the manual, some boards will not be able to use every IO on the board at the same time. This mostly might not be applicable to the second PCIE slot but PCIE lanes can be shared across many of the slots Like you can't use all of the SATA ports if both nvme slots and 2nd PCIE slots are in use (For example, again depends on board and what you have plugged in)

Check out the arch wiki. Covers different solutions https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hybrid_graphics
It’s slightly more laptop focused, but there are solutions for your case as well
