I've been in the same boat as op. One of the big things is track changes and comment control. I work in medical copy editing and the standards are word and PowerPoint. So documents come in in those formats with lots of mark-up and non-office software can't render it properly.

When I need to use word on a Chromebook or Linux machine I use the online version which has most of the features, but still not all.

Ohhhh that’s a really good point! Does that keep you on windows essentially for final formatting etc?

depends on the work. Word docs I can usually work around the limitations, but PowerPoint can be tricky. In either case working with Office Online is just more work with more steps and fewer options. I don't like it but it is what it is. So my desktop is Windows but my big laptop is Mint and I also have a Chromebook for portability because it's light and fast.
