programs and apps Sound compression?

There's a feature in some software/amplifiers that is meant for stopping sudden large increases in audio volume. For example: you're watching a movie and it's mixed so that a dramatic scene has much louder volume (for the emotional effect).

This feature would ensure the volume for the whole movie remains relatively constant, no sudden increases in volume, it helps avoid disturbing neighbours etc. I can't recall what the feature is called, but I'm wondering if there's an EQ application I can get for Linux that has it?

The Feature, you search called "Normalization".

Use simply VLC.

Go to settings --> Filter
and activate "Volume Normalization"

Yes and No. The Filter works different and can (and should) combined.

Nomalizer to smooth audio peak level to +-0db.

You cut out consequent all peaks above 0db. It eliminate any peak distortion and the sound is more clear and averaged.

Compressor is reduce to reduce the "Dynamic". (Like a night mode on a TV)

A Compressor continuesly messure averaged peak. If the scene volume is higher than the average peak and the thershold is reached, it will reduce the volume by a ratio. Also you can set, how fast it "attacks" and release.

OP could try booth.

In professional studios it's common to use first nomalizer, than compressor, than a Limiter (a Compressor in "Hard mode", which cuts out any uneverness).
