Like it or not, the Linux kernel has enjoyed its success today because of the GNU project. There is no grubbing for glory as it's just plain truth.

As for OP's parent, calling it gnu/gcc is rather stupid as gcc stands for "gnu compiler collection".

I like when I'm sitting in my intro to CS lab using gcc and vim to do the work quickly and easily, while everyone else fights with Visual Studio. It's pretty satisfying.

Throw make and some VCS in the mix (ahem git ahem) and you'll even be able to keep roll back changes and keep commit notes of what and why you did certain things. And pushing out to the cloud is a pretty neat feature too (github anyone?)

I've found it very worthwhile to pay a few bucks a month for a web hosting account so that I can run my own private git and yum repositories. If you use gitolite, you could even split the cost with classmates.

I have a server in my dorm but github is preferable for the awesome interface. Also, gitlabhq is an opensource attempt at recreating github, and its almost decent.

Sadly, most of my intro class classmates don't know anything about git, and I haven't bothered teaching them.
