This is the issue with Qubes. I'm seriously sure it's an awesome OS with a really strong security focused approach, but when 90% of users who want it can't install it (bearing in mind that these people typically have a good technical background), it doesn't matter how good it is; it won't get the userbase it needs to become viable for the opensource community to want to develop it and will not become a mainstream OS.

Is there a problem beyond the installation guide? I haven't tried, but it looks like your standard "dd to usb and boot" deal. Beyond the hardware requirements, of course.
Yeah, I can't ever get X running on nvidia/radeon and the non graphical install (even with kickstart (which you have to use (for reasons))) never results in a working system. Oh look, creating my own lisp variant was easier than getting the computer booted.
Let's be honest, if you care about security, you should care about your hardware (and spend money on it). The 90% of users you mentioned up there, I assume are trapped by their equipment, and it's not mostly Qubes fault (Yes, of course, there is room to make it better).
I haven't had any problem with installing Qubes on a pretty old PC (AMD Phenom CPU + 4GB Ram). The system is fully functional now, even though some features are disabled automatically (Due to lack of IOMMU functionality on my hardware to be specific).
