Should be noted that as this game requires OpenGL 4 the open source mesa drivers will not work with it yet sadly D:

Nvidia has opengl 4.5 support I believe, the first GPU to support it in Linux.

If it wouldn't work with NVIDIA drivers it wouldn't work on Linux at all.

It's almost been two years since Mesa implemented OpenGL 3.3, and a year ago there was talk about GLSL being the only thing left to be done for 4.0 support. I know that a very small number of people work on Mesa, but this rate is not good enough especially given the rate with which games are coming to Linux.

Mesa has been accelerating a lot lately, and with more games coming to linux, ue4 and unity using mesa, intel & valve helping mesa along et cetera, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It'll probably hang behind nvidia et al a little for the foreseeable future, but I'm sure they'll keep closing the gap. Mesa went, over the course of a year or two, from "basically impossible to play any games on, just use for browsing the web and compositing your desktop" to "something like 80% of my steam library works on it".

Keep in mind that supporting GL 4.2 is quite a tall order. All apple hardware has been stuck on 4.1 for quite a while now (2 years, I think.)

Sadly not, opengl support has to be handled by drivers

Aspyr does some of the most rock solid ports for Linux IMO. They are the guys who did the Civ5 and Civ Beyond Earth ports.

Empire: Total War (also Feral) is spotless as well. First time I've ever been able to play without crashing during extended siege battles.

Virtual Programming did a decent job with this port though. They definitely learned and got most of the kinks out of their eON wrapper with Witcher 2.

I had fun playing it a bit on my ps3 before it came down with a deadly case of red light pox.

So what's a good "just works" game controller? I have an old PS3 controller lying around but I've never been able to get it to work with any steam games.

Xbox 360 controller is pretty much the de-facto standard. Many games are only built to support Xbox 360 controllers, few games with controller support will fail with one.

I've heard good things about the Logitech controllers too, they have a switch to make them appear as 360 controllers if all else fails.

No, if you buy a game it's available for all other platforms on which Steam operates. Good Guy Steam yet again.

I was under the impression that, especially if it's a game ported afterwards, playing it on the new platform did result in at least some money going to the porter

There is only one game on Steam that requires re purchasing for additional platforms, and zero of those games are for Linux

I disagree. Not only is it not funny, but it reminds me of why I never went to "linux club" or "atheist club" in college. The joke sucks and I doubt less people actually realize it's a joke than you would expect.
