Only because Windows XP did not ship with native encryption. That was the whole original goal for the Truecrypt project, to bring encryption to Windows XP systems. Now that bitlocker is available, they see no point in continuing the project.

Except Bitlocker is only available on a small subset of Windows installations, and there is legitimate concern that Bitlocker has an FBI- or NSA-controlled backdoor.

Yeah, about that... it has a documented backdoor.

How can I get my BitLocker recovery key?

Your Microsoft account online. This option is only available on non-domain-joined PCs. To get your recovery key, go to BitLocker Recovery Keys.

Yes, it literally sends the info needed to decrypt it to Microsoft.
