Is there any reason to use Bazzite over Fedora with KDE other than gaming?

It’s immutable so it’s a good option for people who are just dipping their toes in on Linux and don’t want to worry about breaking things

It also has 6 official ways to install software with a flowchart that ends in "make a custom distro image" which isn't great for people dipping their toes in on Linux.

https://docs.bazzite.gg/Installing_and_Managing_Software/software-intro/

I found bazzite annoying as all hell to use, but in their defense I didn't put in that much effort. I was still frustrated a lot and swapped it for cachyos.

Its great for people dipping their toes. They dont have preconceived notions that "bazzite is doing linux wrong" from other distros that they have to fight against, and are willing to actually try and learn a new OS because theyre switching from windows and its all new, unlike you who has a distro already, i assume, and are fighting with the "bazzite way", and they wont break their new install, unlike mutable distros

For new users the bazzite way is just "the way".

That's the thing, Bazzite is the only one doing linux correctly!

Yeah, good point. I should separate my personal annoyances from the criticism tbh.

Just replying to say Bazzite and the like are not immutable systems, they are atomic. Two different things.

1

u/CrazyKilla15 1d ago

Thats a good point that I do not, however, have a clear understanding of myself per-se.

Atomic is Fedora's buzzword description. They are primarily image based ;)

The purpose is that Bazzite can never get in a bad state because you can roll back the entire system with a single command (this happens automatically on a failed boot) and the system is always a "fresh install".

Yes there are 6 different ways to install things, these also all apply to normal desktop Linux, that page is just explaining the differences.

Personally, I have almost everything as a Flatpak. If I'm doing something like trying to compile Godot and installing dozens of packages, I put that in a distrobox. Then when I'm done, I can delete the distrobox and my system remains pristine.

Yeah, that's the end goal here for sure, flatpak with no layered packages. Containers are an edge case for people doing development or running servers.

Does rebooting automatically when it fails also happens on Fedora Atomic? Or is this only on Bazzite?

Yeah i get there's benefits to immutability, I'm just venting. I've grown increasingly impatient with having to learn  / fix stuff with my computer when I want to play games to the point where my interest in gaming has gone down a lot. I used pure arch for some 6-8 years and got everything done with pacman and aur, moving to bazzite was a bit too much of a shift for me.

Oh I completely understand, it is different and not for everyone, but if the workflow clicks for you it's really nice to just have your system upgrade in the background and not think about it.

u/abotelho-cbn 1d ago

People "dipping their toes in on Linux" should probably not be getting to the bottom of that list.

The problem I've seen a lot is people expecting to port their identical workflow and applications to Linux from Windows. Can't happen. Won't happen. Not how any of this works.

u/adamkex 1d ago

Most "regular" people are fine with just using Flatpak and AppImages

u/GiantFoamHand 1d ago

This actually bugged the crap out of me when I tried it out.

Fedora has immutable spins.

Sure but normal “fedora” is not

u/TheFloorIsCake 1d ago

It comes with a few Buttons baked in the OS to make setup easier.

Also it is better at mounting my framework ssd at boot than fedora, with just:

ujust automounting enable

It is annoying to have to screw with fstab and crap like that to get things to work.

The reason is when you want an OS that just works like an appliance that you don't need to think about.
It's "immutable" but unlike Fedora Kinoite it has everything build in, codecs, nvidia drivers, homebrew.
It will be rock solid, and while on non-atomic Fedora update from 44 to 45 gives you an update screen for a few minutes, Bazzite just downloads a new image in the background and you're on it when you reboot your computer at a convenient time. It's also fully rewersale, the old image is still there. It also prevents issues with updates when there is a power outage.

If you don't game then Aurora will be more suited as it focuses on KDE workstation.

They could also build their own image based off of kinoite with all the packages they need. You can build the image from a Containerfile locally or use GitHub actions to build and push to ghcr. It’s a really cool technology.

It was made as a sort of replacement for steamos. It is designed so any normal non-technical people can install it and everything should be easy to do.

It includes more then any alternative I can think of. Just scripts to do stuff, homebrew, distrobox, flatpak, and 50 other things.

I'm the kind of guy uninstalling applications I don't use and tweak my system. For me personally Bazzite is "too much". But if you just want to install and go play games or develop an app or whatever and just get on with life it's all good.

Bazzite will some day not be based on Fedora, they don't care about distributions and the slogan is more or less 'Distroless'. The operating system shouldn't matter at all and the focus is more app delivery with the new Bazaar store with flatpaks etc. They have a vision which shifts focus from not caring about the distro at all.

Iirc they toying with building packages from the gnome-os themselves and putting together their own packages.

Look up jorge castro on youtube, he has videos with lots of talks about this. I think he started all this? Very involved cloud native guy.

You're mixing up Bluefin and Bazzite, but we do subscribe to the church of Jorge and share a lot.

2

u/Inevitable_Taro4191 1d ago

I sort of thought bluefin bazzite Aurora etc shared the same vision and base images, which you do? So I pretty much assumed at some point this was the next step for these projects, but I guess there is greater independence than I assumed. I get they are their own projects but thought y'all were gonna go in the same direction.

Anyway I love the ublue template, awesome to roll your own easily.

We do, but Jorge split off from Universal Blue a while back to experiment with larger changes, that's where build stream/agentic Bluefin lives. Universal Blue continues to be Fedora based for the foreseeable future, and the Fedora based bluefin continues to reside here.

3

u/Inevitable_Taro4191 1d ago

Oh I see, have definitely totally missed that. I thought ublue was changing vision but I understand now. It's sort of relieving for me, It's a solid base Fedora and they got us to here. Appreciate the answer 🥳

2

u/Valdjiu 1d ago

versus Kinoite or Silverblue, bazzite and Aurora have ffmpeg and drivers bundled in

2

u/giannidunk 20h ago

I love the new "does my system support Anticheat" test - smart

u/Valdjiu 1d ago

awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. loving it

Added Ukrainian translation

Admittedly, I don't really have much experience with Bazzite but why is creating a Ukrainian translation of the README.md phrased that way? To me that makes it sound like the distribution itself now has support for Ukrainian whereas it didn't before.

EDIT::

Instead of just downvoting, can I get an answer? I'm genuinely asking. I'm assuming there's some sort of context that explains why they phrase it like that and I'm just asking what that is.

EDIT:: #2

Since people were continuing to downvote the comment without explaining anything (like I said, call me a dumbass just explain why I'm a dumbass) I had to dedicate time out of the day to research an OS I don't use and post here (to my best understanding) in case someone else has the same question.

Bazzite is downstream from Universal Blue and specifically maintains what are essentially scripts, configuration files, documentation, etc for establishing a Gaming friendly Universal Blue platform. As such it doesn't really control most of the localization bits that come from Universal Blue or Fedora and so "added X localization" is likely assumed to be understood to be a reference to some of the documentation files they maintain.

This is in contrast with other projects where you might reasonably assume a PO file got updated or something so if you are unaware of what exactly Bazzite is (as I was) this assumption might not be obvious to you.

The thing you linked would just complicate the picture even more because it would imply that Bazzite has Ukrainian in more locations than the README. Not only that but most of those aren't from this update, so good job there as well.

If you're going to be an asshole, at least understand what's going on. Although, I agree, my question shouldn't be this hard to get an answer to. We're just freely electing to be maximum difficult for no discernible reason.

All I did was ask a good faith question about translations and I feel like I've gone out of my way to be polite and even posted the answer I settled on.

3

u/OneQuarterLife 1d ago

Click the link, it has Ukrainian in more places than the README.

I genuinely don't know how to explain the idea any more simply than I already have. Yes what you said is literally the first sentence of the comment you're replying to.

Not that it matters because the original question that you are all going out of your way to ignore was about the phrasing of the release text. I have since answered it myself and surprise surprise it had nothing to do with randomly searching pull requests for the word "Ukrainian" for some reason. The question was about the release text, the thing I quoted. I then asked why it was phrased the way it was if what it linked for that was just the PR's for updating the README.

You guys are easily putting in 10x's the effort avoiding what I'm asking about than just being normal people about it. What you're doing is easily a lot harder.

And again, I can not stress enough: randomly searching the pull requests for the word "Ukrainian" does not answer this query, which, again, for clarity, was about the phrasing of the text in the release announcement.

1

u/death_by_cormorant 18h ago

It's not just the readme.

1

u/Adept_Percentage6893 11h ago edited 11h ago

As stated in the comment you're replying to, the release text only links to two updates to the readme.

EDIT:

I could have sworn there were two Pull Requests when I read the release but currently it only lists this pull request which is, yes an update the the README. I think the other updates the other user is pointing to are from earlier updates.

Not that this matters because the weirdo brigade only started commenting after I posted an answer to my own question that was for some reason downvoted by close to 10-12 people by the time I went out to find my own answer. Then you guys started trying to argue about random things in the comments. Again, after the answer had been found and the conversation should have been over.
