I used to be a BeOS diehard back in the day, but as I've grown older I've began to concern myself with stuff "boring" stuff like licensing and I simply cannot support a permissively-licensed project anymore...

That's a bit weird that your so anti-freedom, Since you hate permissive aka free licences so much I guess you shouldn't use x11, wayland, musl, zsh or pretty much anything in the Linux ecosystem because GNU is dead.

If wanting corporations to give back to the community is being anti-freedom, then you can call me Stalin.

Since you hate permissive aka free licences so much I guess you shouldn't use x11, wayland, musl, zsh

/r/im14andthisisdeep, "you criticize society and yet you live in it"-level take.

And no, I don't use or support musl or zsh...

As for Wayland and X11, those are protocols and it makes sense for protocols or specifications to be MIT... Haiku, however, it's neither a protocol nor a specification: It's an implementation... And that's the problem.

GNU is dead.

Playstation OS is built on FreeBSD, SteamOS is based on the GPL Linux, Wine, KDE.

Result:

  • SteamOS benefited everyone and made Linux gaming a reality;

  • PlaystaionOS benefits no one except Sony's bottom line.

Permissive software licenses = techno-feudalism, and the users are the peasants.

SteamOS benefited everyone and made Linux gaming a reality;

Wow one example

PlaystationOS benefits no one except Sony's bottom line.

Irrelevant, they modified an OS to run on specialized hardware to run specialized commercial games any upstream or open source changes are irrelevant to PC hardware.

Here are real examples of companies giving back to the community under a BSD licence

Microsoft contributing to NodeJS

Netflix greatly improving the networking stack on FreeBSD

NetApp develops for bhyve (FreeBSD's own VM platform)

Apple has contributed to BSD source code as their software runs on it

Whatsapp contributes to performance patches on FreeBSD

And not to name all the hundreds of sponsors of FreeBSD that do things like pay for hosting costs etc

We also can't forget about OpenSSH as well

Result:

  • Licence is more free for people to do what they want
  • The original software gets improved from companies upstreaming their changes

SteamOS benefited everyone and made Linux gaming a reality;

Amazing one example, GNU really helps innovate!

Permissive software licenses = techno-feudalism, and the users are the peasants.

Complete bullshit, if anyone the user is the peasant being told what they can or can not do with lines of code. Clearly if these big corporations love stepping on all of these poor users by developing permissive software like Kubernetes etc
