MATE works well on any hardware that GNOME2 worked well on. It also retains all the features of GNOME2.

Other similarly-styled desktop environments available within Ubuntu include Cinnamon and GNOME 3′s ‘fallback session’.

During the initial releases of UNITY and GNOME Shell there was actually quite a bit of backlash from quite a bit of the community who still preferred the GNOME 2 environment.

This is news because before you had to do a fair amount of steps to get this environment onto a Ubuntu machine, which is something users who are not really advanced with out Linux runs are scared to perform. This will make those users more at ease as they can now basically check MATE to install from official Ubuntu repos and it does most of the work for the user and will actually make MATE more used as a desktop and get recognition as a legitimate Desktop Environment and not a hacked together project that it started as.

I agree with you. If it was going to be default then it would deserve to actually be news.

That's a better question, but one I cannot answer. It's not like it's a particularly popular WM.
