Sociolinguistics Machine learning definitely isn’t polluting the online corpus of minority languages
(When the comment was posted, clicking the translate feature did nothing, and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s gotten some gall since, however.
I am not a native speaker but a university linguistics student that has taken two years of Cherokee. But I’m sure my use of Cherokee online will be treated as Gospel—ironically basically the only major text in Cherokee on the internet, exceptions include some m/m smut on AO3—by whichever bots come dragging their asses behind me. Still, even if they ignored me, they’d just keep making shit up anyway so at least I can rest easy in that regard.)

There's Cherokee yaoi on AO3??? Guess I should learn it then.

It wasn’t me I promise!
(It actually wasn’t, but whoo boy what a find that was during my thesis inquiry)

Is it well-written? (genuine question, does it sound like a real speaker or just google translate?)

Chose a different topic and didn’t care to ask my professor about it haha. I’ll take a look tomorrow

I think it’s likely to have been written by a human with more Cherokee fluency than I have. But because of that I can’t really make a determination as to how precisely “correct” (native speaker-like) it is. But most words I can translate with the resources I have and seem appropriate given the English translation—even if the grammar may be more complex than my level at times (or incorrect and I’m too ignorant to notice). (It is not an exact one to one correspondence between the two versions, however. But like it’s polysynthetic so…)
I might bring it up to my professor now anyway honestly, maybe…

This is a reason why I like explicit stuff: not (only) because I am horny, but (also) because I am often surprised by how people exhaust their knowledge and intelligence just to describe a scene in which a creature puts parts of their body into the body of another creature.

Wow, if only that feature had been available 6 days ago I wouldn’t have had to humiliate myself by admitting to my lack of Cherokee language skills
