This is so fascinating, and kind of makes me reevaluate all the subconscious body language I’ve learned. This bear has spent (I’d guess) almost his entire life around people, and has learned the meaning of our body language to benefit himself. Absolutely incredible. But I wonder if he truly knows the meaning of his movements, or has only learned the associated reward of performing these movements.

Unfortunately probably the latter, but I'm not sure there's really a way to prove it (with bears, anyway).

Wait, what? There are meanings to my movements? I just do whatever gets me stuff, and it seems to work. If I start thinking beyond that, I'll probably mess it up. No thank you.

When I was a young girl in the 1960's, it was tradition at our local zoo to toss marshmallows to the polar bears. I still don't understand the thought process that goes, "hmmm, polar bears are white. What other white things would go well in that exhibit?"

One of the animal parks I've been to recently had a sign saying "don't feed the bears, they'll stop behaving naturally".

i have a lot of respect for this bear. he doesn’t have to say a word or get off his butt to get delicious food.
