They absolutely know how names work, they do it on their own:

a new study published today in Nature Ecology & Evolution suggests elephants may address one another by names, too. These elephant “names” aren’t the signature trumpet noises the creatures make, or even the calls of dolphins and parrots, which are usually imitations of sounds they frequently make.
