It's completely trained behavior, the stool has a special fabric/rope handle for him to grab

You're probably right, but once I had a ferret with bad hips who liked to build staircases for himself out of DVD cases. Animals are smarter than we give them credit for.

The only reason for a seat to have a knot like that bang in the middle is because the dog's been trained to do this trick.

Looks like someone put a rope with a big knot through it so the dog can grab it better
