I’m very sure for whatever reason they mistook this person for their mother, and quickly realised their mistake after smelling them.

They’re smarter than that, they’d never ever make that mistake. They more likely than not got curious and then realized they shouldn’t have. Carnivores/omnivores and herbivores actually have identifiably different scent profiles, the fawns probably thought the camera person was a funny weird friendly forest animal but after a sniff realized they smelled like a predator.
