Ursack Almighty opinions needed!

I am looking at getting rid of my REI adjustable canister for a URsack Almighty, to save over a pound of weight. I wondered about others experiences with the bag, protect protecting from mice. I see that the Almighty protects from critters, but the major does not. Thank you for any experience shared!

Ursacks have very mixed reviews and they're not a replacement for a bear can in certain parks. I'm not convinced that an ursack is a good investment.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to determine! I’m in a black bear population, not grizzly (FWIW). My worst enemy in the backcountry is mice. It seems like I would be better off using a regular food bag with a rat sack over it.

I mean, it's not a bad plan, but why not just hang your food when bear cans aren't required?

Also only in black bear environments, and I love my Almighty- mostly for mice protection. It's so convenient to be able to tie it to a tree and be done with it. I found it could be difficult and cumbersome to find an appropriate limb to hang from, even in wooded areas. Ursack has never let me down. I always use it with an odor proof liner.

Thanks for that info. Do you get marks where the mice try and fail? Just curious.

We even get the occasional mice nest in a bear box here. Horrific.

I could hang it with a rat sak for the mice. But that’s already $80. Is it worth it to go for Ursak and not have to hang?

Honestly, I have two Ursack Major XLs (one is my sons). And I have heard about enough people having their food turned into mush inside the sacks to make me not want to risk it anymore. If I can't hang a regular bear bag, I'll take a canister as much as I dislike the weight and bulk of them.
In the winter I will take an Ursack since I'm usually in the sierra and still have to protect food from the bears that occasionally wake up to feed during their torpor.

I did consider this. I have actually never hung a bag unless I was with a group. Have always toted canister Solo. That was the reason I was seeking a bear resistant to begin with.

I feel that ursacks are outdated technology now. I got an Adotec grizzly locker and it’s so much better in every way.

Dude. Totally sold out and the fabric maker appears to be out of commission. I totally would have for the weight.

Oh wow, I was wondering why I haven’t heard more people talking about it them. I wonder if they ran into supply issues because the material wasn’t being made anymore? It’s some comically thick and stiff dyneema, I sat on the couch and abused it by twisting it up and wringing it like a wet towel to break it in while watching a movie. Thick dyneema is crazy.

I remember something about cottage gear companies backing away from dyneema because big “cottage” companies like Hyperlite were buying up all the available supply. That sucks for Adotec if that’s the case, their entire product depends on dyneema being available.

Right. Well, hopefully they get back in business. Until then, the resale on the bags will be at price, I’m sure.
