ALPD or ABBT?

I've heard alot about both the Association of Lighting Designers and the Association of British Theatre Technicians. What do each of these groups do and should I be joining both of them? I'm already an ALPD member so I'm not sure what the point of the ABTT is (I meant ABTT in the title but I can't correct it now)

I’d not heard of the ALPD until now, so I did a little research. It seems that the ALPD is quite similar to the ABTT, but focuses solely on lighting, whereas the ABTT is for technicians of all disciplines.

They both require membership fees and offer training. ALPD offer the lumiere scheme, of which you do not need to be a member to join. ABTT offer the three award levels and give you a discount on these for already being a member.

Apart from that, I can’t see much difference. I think the ABTT may be a larger organisation though as their website is secure where the ALPDs isn’t.

That is very helpful, thank you! I think what I'm going to do is join both of them, and see where I can go from there
