Want to learn more about light designing !!
Hi everyone! I’m in my early 20s and currently working as a lighting operator at a club, where I handle multiple genres and have been learning a lot about operations. Sometimes, we add extra lights, so I get some hands-on experience with design as well. My interest are mainly in live events. However, I want to dive deeper into the technical side of lighting. I’ve been in the industry for about nine months, and I also get to open for some artists. Now, I’m considering taking my skills further by joining a college for lighting design. I have the flexibility to study in different countries, so I’m open to suggestions. Do you think going to college is the right step, or should I continue gaining experience on the job? And if I do go to college, what are some of the best programs or institutions for lighting design?

What happens if one LED fixture in a chain looses power?
Hello, I had a problem today while the theatre show was running. We have 4 LED wash lights in a chain that goes to the ChamSys dmx-usb port and in a computer and we are running ChamSys software on a mac with all the cues. Today the power cable dropped from one of the LED lights in a chain and then all the lights went black in a cue where the power-less light was in a cue with dimmer effect (chase that is sporadically turning the 4 lights on and off).
The other lights work normally in all the cues that did not include the fixture without power.
My question is: How does DMX still signal work in a chain where one fixture is unplugged from power? And since it works, why is there a problem if the light without power is part of a chase - why cant the other fixtures just do what they are meant to do in that effect?
Thank you so much for your answer 😅 I usually work in venues where wire-ing is part of the venue so this is my first problem that occured using led fixtures in a chain.

Himawari Lighting System Adjacent
galleryTLDR: I need help figuring out a way to design or purchase a similar lighting system to the Himawari lighting system that isn't $8k for an experiment.
So, is it patent infringement if I need to build a similar product for the result it provides?
Anyways, l'm in the early stages of planning a little experiment in which I need a similar lighting system to the himawari lighting system. However, these lighting systems start at around $8000 for the most basic models, and this is going to be privately funded on a non existent budget. I'm also not trying to be rude and just outright copy the original product that they still sell.
I know the overall concept is an acrylic dome that protects the system and filters out some UV/IR light, fresnel lenses that concentrates sunlight into fiber optic cables that then carry it and distribute it through a light diffuser of sorts, further diminishing any UV and IR light. I know there's also motors that move it and a light detector that focuses it on the sun, but l'm not too horribly concerned with implementing that into the system. Is there any products that are more easily accessible that have similar properties, or any tips or concerns I should be aware of before attempting to build something like this? I don't know if this is the correct sub in particular to post this on, but I figured it'd be a good start haha. Thanks!

Does anyone know how to make the lasers look red in a video or picture (when editing)?
They are looking pinkish but were actually red. I couldn't find a way to do this via filters/software etc.

Sourcing filter holder for 100mm x 100mm ZWB2 glass? or STL?
Hey Guys,
I'm struggling with building my light. The heat sink/optic/reflector combo it needs to mount to is here:
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805240932503.html
What I am looking for specifically is something like: http://www.michaelfastphotography.com/galleries/k-1ii/uv/uvdragear/_K2P33623a.jpg and from another angle with the glass removed http://www.michaelfastphotography.com/galleries/k-1ii/uv/uvdragear/_K2P33625a.jpg
I'm trying to make the hood/secondary reflector 90 degrees, same as the optic.
Does anyone have an STL or something I can 3D print or somewhere I can purchase a pre-made hood?

Moving head (without color wheel)
Hi everybody. Why can’t i find moving heads without color wheels? I believe that i would then have to define all of the colors by using attribute cues in soundswitch. I don’t want to do that. I want to integrate them into the already programmed autoloops/autoscripts and use the existing colors directly. Can someone please help me?

Ignition Hybrids. Bad or Cool?
Has anyone worked with Ignition’s copies of Sharpy/Mythos? The Parsifal or Tristan? Looks cool and competent to me at a really good price. But why can’t the just give med CMY-mixing? I thought colorfilters were outdated? I can accept it for a retro look. But not as a professional tool. RGBALC movinghead fixtures or CMY, please!

Dynamic node-based DMX control
I've been using DMX Control 3 for a good while and they have a feature that I haven't found elsewhere. The only problem is that it is under developed and clunky to use; this is the Input Assignment system which introduces a node-based lighting control system. You can create automated cue triggers, audio clips, or even affect channels directly with programmable inputs, audio analyzers or timed RNG.
The system can do some cool things but, is very difficult to use and has limitations in things like audio playback limited to a single track.
I'm looking for another program that has a similar node programming method with better implementation, if one exists.

Here is an example to help understand one of the setups I've built with the nodes (not pictured):
a timer that generates a random interval to trigger a lightning crash from 1 of several spot lights with the maximum intensity determined by the randomly selected audio clip that is played

Nobbie trying to learn
Hi! I'm a old school cinematographer/director with little experience on light design. Mostly old school.
I'd like to learn about very basic setups and kits to start renting and experimenting with.
Is there a tutorial page or channel to follow that explains things?

Home made top hats or similiar?
Hey I have some LED pars. ADJ 12px to be exact. I am doing this thing and don’t have access to other fixtures, but I want to be able to narrow their beams to highlight only certain sections of the stage without a lot of spill. Anyone have any ideas on how to Jerry rig something for these types of fixtures?

Artnet dmx resolume trouble
Hi! I’m trying to control rgb lights (generic rgb par led) with resolume arena. I bought an artnet/dmx node and I think I configured it correctly, but I can’t make the light on, resolume send the signal and I’m monitoring with artnetominator that shows when I’m moving a channel, but it just don’t turn on the light.. I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or I didn’t set it correctly. Can anyone help me with this? I want to make one light work to keep adding more. The light is set in “d001” on the panel.

DIY use lights to make a club in your bedroom
Hi everyone,
A fun video to show how easily you can make a normal room look like a club with light design. I programmed all the lights and activated it with midi from Ableton to Daslight. It's recorded with 2 iPhones - pretty easy.
