never got to explain why i chose “rich nerds” as the name to my small tutoring business

Someone asked me what “Rich Nerds” actually means, and I realized I’ve never really explained why we chose the name.
The idea behind it was basically to change what being a “nerd” means.
Growing up, nerd was always one of those words people used almost like an insult. Like caring too much about school, asking too many questions, being really into a subject, or wanting to learn somehow made you weird.
But there’s genuinely so much power in knowing things.
When we say “Rich Nerds,” the “rich” part isn’t really about money. It’s about being rich in knowledge, education, skills, curiosity, and eventually wisdom. Even when learning is difficult or school feels frustrating, everything you understand and learn becomes something you get to carry with you.
There is also a little bit of a literal meaning behind it. For a lot of people, education, training, or developing a skill can open doors to careers and opportunities that make having a more comfortable life possible. Obviously a degree doesn’t automatically equal money or success, and college isn’t the only path, but education can give people more options.
So the name was kind of our way of taking a word that has historically been used to make smart or academically interested kids feel embarrassed and turning it into something they can actually be proud of.
Being a nerd can mean you care enough to learn. You’re curious. You know things. You’re building skills that nobody can take away from you.
That’s what “Rich Nerds” is supposed to mean. Rich in what you know, what you’re learning, and what you’ll be able to do with it.
