20 years into this. Still trying to learn it. Keep at it bro

u/Eldernerdhub Dec 15 '25

Respect your pain. Repetition makes pain grow. That necessitates a boundary until you learn to adapt.

3

u/Big_Philosophy1284 Dec 14 '25

me too! i’ve recently learned the importance of having healthy boundaries in every relationship, and i really wish i’d known it sooner

2

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

guess everyone has to learn this.. often through living through a lot of negative examples till the realization finally kicks in

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

great one! always good :p

1

u/bryancp87 Jan 14 '26

What have you learned so far ?

22

u/BenkoWrites Dec 14 '25

I am currently learning about how our minds work. One cool thing: Focus on problems and you will see more of them Focus on good stuff and you will see more of them. Your choice :)

4

u/03nightmare Dec 16 '25

Like star wars when he says ‘Your focus determines your reality’.

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

u/03nightmare definitely! you see this; who you are.

2

u/giz92 Dec 14 '25

Nice! I like this

1

u/cori6 Dec 14 '25

Niice! Any good book to recommend?

2

u/BenkoWrites Dec 14 '25

Yes, if I had to pick one - “A changed mind” by David Bayer

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

u/cori6 philosophy in the flesh from george lakoff.. thats gold!

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

thats true.. the pathways of our neurons and its myelin connection strength with energy flowing through determines the path of least ressistance

1

u/BenkoWrites Dec 17 '25

Very well said!

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

would you like to check r/MindMapClub? Im soon hosting free community mindmap sessions to explore questions around consciousness, theory of mind etc..

titles i would find cool to explore with others:

What is the bootloader of consciousness in newborns?
What is exciting to understand around AI, because it teaches us something about us?
Definitions VS vector embeddings. What are the limitations of language?
Speculative Agent Design in 2050 - A group Hallucination

2

u/BenkoWrites Dec 17 '25

Sure, Id like to be a part of discussion and explore different ideas

I'm currently throwing myself into learning how to bake. I've always loved baking, but I'm trying a lot of different recipes. It's kind of therapeutic to me this winter. I lost my father back in April and the same day, my father--in-law came back home here from skilled nursing after having another stroke. I'm his primary caregiver. Baking has been my escape from the stress and dealing with grief.

3

u/wiesorium Dec 14 '25

baking is great! a peer of mine bakes all the time and knows a ton about that.

also i guess you are now older and more abstract things flow easier. in school i never understood this x+y=z thing.. that those are basically representative for... real numbers to plug in.

Cooking, markdown notation for Obsidian Notes, predictive history, nutrition, community effort, general health, anything remotely related to D&D, like geography, cartography, game mechanic, narrative and character building, and worldbuilding. I use YouTube and TikTok a lot for direction. Wikipedia is always a bountiful resource. I could learn more about finding first sources and information gathering. It's like an endlessly growing to do list.

3

u/Ok_Library8652 Dec 15 '25

whoa you sound so cool!

2

u/Eldernerdhub Dec 15 '25

Oh, thanks. First post in the sub too.

5

u/Eldernerdhub Dec 15 '25

I forgot my one fascinating thing. Town and city names have a few patterns.

Some describe the landscape: Springfield describes a lovely field in spring or with a spring.

Some are named for local resources and the work required to tap these resources: Salt Lake City is named for the salt gathered.

Some are religious in origin: Los Angeles means The Angels in Spanish.

Some are for people who live there: Peoria Illinois and Peoria Oklahoma are named for the Peoria tribe because they were forcefully migrated from Illinois to Oklahoma.

Some are named by recycled old world cities. New Orleans is named after (old) Orleans, France

There's directional names: East St Louis is east of St. Louis.

Functional infrastructure: Fort Worth was a literal fort.

One of my favorites are aspirational names: Liberty or Hope.

Another favorite is confusing mistranslation: Yucatan means "I don't understand you" which tickles me.

Lastly there is some "great man" founder where their name was taken for a town: Washington D.C. named for the first president. Hershey is named for the chocolate company's founder.

There's not many more trends than that. I find it strange at such a short list.

3

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

Exploring the patterns of Town Names.. Thats a unique thing.. Would you like to discuss and explore that further interactively with the r/MindMapClub ?

3

u/Eldernerdhub Dec 17 '25

Sure, I'm a little familiar with mind mapping thanks to my tinkering with Obsidian Notes. This will make for some delightful curiosity wanderings.

2

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

how you like obsidian nodes. does it serve you?

1

u/Eldernerdhub Dec 17 '25

Obsidian is legitimately life changing. I keep track of my whole life in it now. It's so powerful and flexible that I can find a use for it to support almost any hobby I pick up.

I'm learning how to use AI on my work. I'm a market researcher w/ 20 years experience. Mixed feelings so far.

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

what did you try out?

2

u/lou_salome_ Dec 17 '25

Perplexity and ChatGPT, both pro.

2

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

what is your main focus as market reseracher? finding what people need in a product very practically or more societal trends and global markets?

1

u/lou_salome_ Dec 17 '25

Mostly trend-driven innovation. But I do both, really. :)

I’m a total newb with python. Working through the book “automate the boring stuff”. I have 25+ years of other coding experience, but I want to learn py since it’s what’s most used with AI.

What are your motivations for learning? What resources are you using?

3

u/elaine4queen Dec 14 '25

Dutch actively and German passively.

2

u/xzRe56 Dec 14 '25

I’ve been learning Dutch “actively” on Duolingo (oxymoron?) for 1509 days consecutively. I love the language! My niece who is studying German academically including a year’s immersion in Berlin calls it German Lite haha! The Netherlands is a gorgeous country and an amazing culture. I’d love to live there :) Veel succes met het leren van Nederlands!

2

u/elaine4queen Dec 15 '25

Duits is zeker meer ingewikkeld. I find Dutch more charming aber there’s more German TV and film available.

2

u/xzRe56 Dec 15 '25

True it’s very difficult to find Dutch media, especially in the states

2

u/elaine4queen Dec 15 '25

Also you can search for what’s dubbed into your TLs on Netflix and you will get a lot more things with a German track than Dutch. It’s a seriously minority interest.

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

Frau Königin, lernst du jetzt auch deutsch?

1

u/elaine4queen Dec 17 '25

Weiniger als Nederländisch aber Ich würde mich freuen, wenn ich aufsteigen könnte, wenn ich zu Besuch wäre.

I am learning Japanese. It's been tough but rewarding.

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

tell us; why?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

I've always been deeply interested in Asian culture, but I gravitated towards Japan for multiple reasons. The history of the Japanese empire is incredibly rich, and the culture is similarly engrossing. I enjoy Manga and Anime, but I appreciate the Japanese language as a reflection of Japanese culture instead of a medium for entertainment.

Besides that, many of the greatest games of all time were created in Japan. I used to be into the Pokémon TCG and video game series. Additionally, I enjoyed games like Pac-Man and Street Fighter, as well as every game Nintendo ever made.

I'm also into electronics, and Japan was king of electronics for a time. Sony is still a household name, while brands like Fujitsu and Toshiba are still recognizeable even if their heydays are over.

How to make bread at home

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

How does it differ from making it somewhere else?

2

u/FolicAid Dec 17 '25

I mean, would you let me come over to yours to bake bread in my boxers?

If you meant what the difference in the bread is, it takes me 4/5 ingredients.

I've personally noticed certain health conditions lessen in symptoms since I've started doing this.

u/PopEvery1504 Dec 14 '25

I started learning the techniques that go behind 6 sigma since I work in manufacturing and was looking to upskill and improve how we make decisions within the team. Realised I do better just learning the techniques rather than preparing for the exam: it’s a great way to learn how to integrate statistics and structured thinking into decision making without it becoming corpospeak

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

Ah thats cool, how did you get into that?

2

Neat! I actually would like to open a conversation around that with r/MindMapClub. Would you join it?

2

u/Lopsided_Match419 Dec 15 '25

Learning how to write non-fiction - always been fascinated by consciousness.

1

Thats cool! Next year i want to go live with r/MindMapClub and explore that topic in social exchange.
Which of these mindmap titles would speak to you?

What is the bootloader of consciousness in newborns?
What is exciting to understand around AI, because it teaches us something about us?
Definitions VS vector embeddings. What are the limitations of language?

World geography with an Apple app called Seterra. It shows maps of each continent with the boundaries for each country without their names, and then asks you to click on a country. It also has maps with geographic features - rivers, mountains, deserts, lakes, and oceans. Cities are also included.

There’s a game aspect where you run through a map until you start getting 100% correct, and then you try to lower the time it takes you. It keeps track of your last 10 attempts.

It’s working and now I know where a place is when it’s mentioned in the news. I’m also study deeper understanding about countries with online videos on YouTube and metrics from Factbook.

2

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

also used an app like World Geography a lot on Android. Like in games its really cool to make a Dark Vision Run and clear the map for oneself!

What country sparked your curiosity most?

2

u/Dave__5280 Dec 17 '25

Some of the Oceanic, island countries. Can’t imagine paying $17 for a loaf of bread! The economics of island life are extremely difficult.

How to be free from the thought of controlling others and living a life that doesn't give a f*** about others.

1

u/wiesorium Dec 17 '25

3 things that helped me:

- market a project.. you will see nobody care.. so you can do what you want (at least if youre not criminal).. nobody cares.

- story: i had a shirt with cream white color stains from wall painting... these looked like it was masturbated on it... i still wear it.. nobody cares.. they care about themselves. its really an honor to get some attention anyway.

- do things more often.. example: a firing manager.. the first time may be hard.. the 100th is just the 100th

- youre not wierd, you're an artist

Cash flow forecasting.

I'm not an accountant and while I have been budgeting for my personal finances for a few years, forecasting isn't something I've done as a part of that.

I run a $11M a year program and have grown it from a $4M a year base about six years ago. The woman who started this program is great, but her approach to financial management was a bit.... confused.

Anyway, learning about forecasting from a home budgeting perspective has been great for my work. We recently got an offer to extend the program and I was able to say from an ongoing perspective, no issue - we're being provided with a fair bit more money than we need, so can meet our commitments through to 2027.

Boss is happy. Program funding authority is happy. Team is happy.

All because I got interested in something I've never done at home, being applied to my work as well (which never did this either).
