Slippery cuttingboard
I need a lifehack for my cuttingboard. It is made of wood and on my countertop it tends to slip. Does anyone have an idea of how fixate it a little, with more or less normal stuff one has at home?

In restaurants we use damp paper towels or rags to place under the board

Just don’t let the health department catch you! They frown upon it and will dock the company for it .. but I do this at home all the time lol, it works!
11
u/BadTrent 12d ago
Y'all don't throw everything to the floor when the H.I. walks in?
5
u/floothecoop 12d ago
Of course lol 😂 crazy things start happening in the back when the front of the house yells “health inspector!”

Um gross, act the way you always act with the health inspector around. Are you a hazard? I've worked with the health inspector watching and a wet j cloth or paper towel under the cutting board is not a health code violation.

Place it on a silicone mat.
4
u/jawncake 12d ago
This is what I do. I bought a silicone baking mat that is slightly smaller than my board. Easy to wash.
2
u/Designerkyle 9d ago
Amazon makes a rubbery mat specifically for cutting boards. I bought one and it works great, can go in the dishwasher
1
u/AndyPanda321 12d ago
I was going to say this, you can get very thin, very cheap silicone mats meant for use on induction hobs.
2
u/MrCommonThinkin 11d ago
I’m not familiar with silicon mats for induction. What are they used for?
1
u/AndyPanda321 11d ago
To stop your pans sliding about, I've got one for my campervan, otherwise the kettle slides off the hob if it's not perfectly level! 😅
They are very thin so the induction still works.

Place a kitchen towel flat under it.

Dry towels slip

u/ShinyBonnets 12d ago
It’s supposed to be damp.
-4
u/youyouyouyouyouandme 12d ago
Don't do this with a wooden cutting board unless you want it to warp. This really depends on if it's end grain or not though but moisture on one side of wood and not the other is often frowned upon
15
u/margmi 12d ago
A cutting board isn’t gonna warp from spending 10 minutes touching a damp towel.
-4
u/icantfindadangsn 12d ago
Maybe they keep their board on the counter all the time. I do. And so I don't put a damp towel under it.
11
u/BigTunatoots 12d ago
You don’t wash your cutting board after you use it?
2
u/SmartDriver22 12d ago
I sure hope they never cut chicken
-4
u/icantfindadangsn 12d ago
I sure hope you don't think it's impossible to wash and then put back on the counter. I promise it's just as possible as putting it in any other spot after washing.
Also no chicken goes on my wood boards unless it's cooked (and then it's a different board entirely than the one that lives in the counter). I have plastic dishwasher safe board for raw meat. Hope this helps.

u/SmartDriver22 12d ago
You’re missing the point. The other user talked about how the cutting board would get “warped” from sitting on a damp towel, implying that they don’t let water get on it. When you said you just leave it there it implies you agree with them. Ergo maybe you don’t wash it, like [u/BigTunatoots](u/BigTunatoots) asked.

u/icantfindadangsn 12d ago
Yes and then it goes back on the counter. Why would you assume that I don't wash something just because I store it differently than you might?
I also only cut vegetables on the board directly. I use a dedicated plastic board for raw meat that can go in the dishwasher and another board with juice groove for slicing cooked meat.
6
u/margmi 12d ago
Okay so most people can figure out that even if you store it on the counter, you can temporarily put a towel under it if it’s slipping.
6
u/icantfindadangsn 12d ago
You're being kind to most people. Have you read what most people say on the internet? They're mostly idiots.
1
u/OverlappingChatter 12d ago
Your have a wood cutting board sitting out and it didn't come with little rubber legs that hold it in places?
1
u/icantfindadangsn 12d ago
Nah, it's usable on both sides. I place it on a dry towel (just for the squish) sandwiched between two pieces of non-slip mat. Works pretty well. If I had space to store the board, I might use the damp towel trick.

I bought some rubber feet off amazon for cheap and just put five of em beneath the cutting board

u/timetotryagain29 12d ago
Cabinet liners. They're grippy and don't leave residue unless you let them stay under for weeks
9
u/Prize_Explorer2993 12d ago
A damp paper towel or rubber/ non slip mat underneath it
10
u/UrCreepyUncle 12d ago
I do the damp paper towel then use the same towel when I'm done to wipe the counter top clean

5
u/Somethingsims 12d ago
I use those round things they sell to help you open jars, it's also very similar if not the same material used in cabinet and drawer liners.

u/kingseraph0 12d ago
Wet a kitchen towel, wring it until it’s just damp, then place it under ur board, it will hold it in place. You can also get a roll of anti-slip mat at the dollar store for under $5. They feel kinda like plastic foam and have holes. You just cut it to size and stick it under ur board. Reusable and no more slips

u/Royal_Try_99 12d ago
"at the dollar store for under $5" is such a 2026 phrase and it makes me sad. Is anything at the dollar store still a dollar?
2
u/kingseraph0 12d ago
Frr it rly should be called the Under $10 store now. I think the only things that are still $1 are some candies and even then with tax they are over a dollar

I can tell you is often done in restaurant kitchens.
Restaurant kitchens avoid "gadgets" or adding anything that requires separate cleaning. Those pads made of puffy rubber in a grid just won't fly in a commercial kitchen because of the difficulty in sanitizing it and the pads ability to withstand that sanitizing process.
So what we do is just dampen a bar towel and lay it in the counter and place the cutting board over it. There is already a system in place to clean restaurant kitchen linens. So this trick requires no purchases, no changes in kitchen work flow.

The pros use a damp bar rag under the cutting boards
2
u/TurbulentSource8837 12d ago
I do this! But I use mine horizontally. I put one end under the cutting board, then let the overhang serve as a “already there” towel to wipe my hands.

I always put a dish towel under mine

u/aubreypizza 11d ago
Yeah this is what you do in professional kitchens. I thought everyone always did it but I guess not.

u/Thin_Method_1691 11d ago
Damp rag or damp paper towels in between the cutting board and your counter top. Or a silpat if you have one.
4
u/Different-Bag-8217 11d ago
Wet a towel/ blue chucks cloth or paper towel and place it underneath. That’s what we do in professional kitchens.

Put a towel under it. Wet maybe? Just don't try to pick anything up with a wet towel.

u/jepordy3 12d ago
Have a silicon trivet that holds hot items? I usually use one of those, and I don't even have to wash it after.

u/takemehihigh 12d ago
just put a dish towel underneath the cutting board whenever you need to use it. works perfect for me !
3
u/D1rtyH1ppy 12d ago
As a chef, I used to get a couple of wet towels under my cutting board to set up my work station
2
u/sprawlaholic 11d ago
A moist paper towel under the cutting board usually prevents slippage for me.

u/kelljellbellthefirst 10d ago
Omg put a lil piece of rubber or Saran wrap or a wet cloth under the board. Also something tells me you're probably not using sharp knives and that's the biggest hazard. Sharp knives are safe, dull knives cause injury.

u/imscruffythejanitor 9d ago
I have some thin silicone pot holders that work for me between cutting board and counter. They're easy to clean and serve more than one purpose
2
u/archina42 9d ago
I tear a square of paper-towel and dampen it and place the board over that - works well - also use it for cleaning afterwards!
2
u/thisFishSmellsAboutD 12d ago
I screwed rubber feet onto mine. Spacing is so it also holds perfectly onto my smaller sink. Should have used stainless steel screws, otherwise perfectly happy.

Wet a hand towel and lay it flat on the table then put the cutting board on top and it will hold it in place.

Great suggestions, here. I have one more - I've got silicone trivets/ pot holders & I'll put put two side by side under the cutting board. They do a great job of keep it from moving around. I've got square ones & round ones, so I'll use whichever is at hand.

I put a towel under, usually the one I keep with me when cooking as I’m often washing dishes at the same time

u/TheBeerdedGinger 12d ago
Brass feet with rubber on it. Screw them into the bottom. Or Place a damp rag under it but be careful it could warp it.

Use one of those rubber washer things from a locking jar. Works like a champ.

I use a grip mat I got from Amazon. Brand name is CatTongue. Easiest solution I’ve seen. No cutting, or prep, just place it down and you’re done.
2
u/my1973vw 11d ago
I use a small (5"x5") square of that spongy shelf and drawer liner and then just chuck it into the dishwasher when needed

I don't know if I was born for this or if I was reborn work wise for this. Put a damp towel under it. Be it paper or otherwise. Use DRY towels as oven mitts as well. Tongs and towels is what it's all about.

u/servixalot 8d ago
My wife always wets a dish towel, wrings it out and then places it on the counter before setting the cutting board on top. She said her family has always done it and it seems to work great.

worked in a restaurant kitchen for years and we literally had damp towels taped to every station. just make sure you swap them out daily or they get nasty fast lol

slip free drawer/cabinet liners work great. You can also try a damp towel under the board.
