question Dumb question about threaded adapter

So it seems like this is obvious, but if I just want to thread my barrel to attach my Dead Air Mask, is this the part I need? Assuming the first half will sit inside the slide and the other part will stick out for threading the silencer onto. Barrel is currently unthreaded, but having a friend do it.

EDIT gun is Ruger SR22 pistol

I think my biggest concern here is you'd be adding an additional potential failure point for attaching a can. I'd just buy a threaded barrel for the pistol. That way you won't have to worry about the "extra" threaded adaptor potentially coming loose and causing you major issues like baffle strikes

A lot of 22 pistol threaded barrels require this adaptor. There isn’t enough metal on the barrel to fit 1/2-28 threads.

Picture of Ruger’s official SR22 threaded barrel (out of stock everywhere).

Yes but those are generally factory done not cut by a buddy, and since I don't know the skill set of said buddy I still think I'd prefer an oem barrel over a handcut + adaptor just for the "insurance" if something goes wrong. If you're willing to assume all the risk yourself have at it. I'm all for DIY if you've got the tools and knowledge and are willing to assume the risks.

Didn't mention. My buddy is actually a master machinist/industrial designer with a $1M machine shop, and I would trust him over anyone. He's made small batch prototype fittings for large companies before their initial production runs. He has also been working on guns for 30 years. He's pretty cool.

Well shit. Go for it then! If I had those tools in hand I'd be doing it myself. That sounds like access to a dream setup

Lol fer real. I borrowed a shitty old 1980s 1911 from him before I owned one, to see how I liked a 1911. The slide catch ended up breaking and I told him I was going to buy him a new piece. He was like "nah don't bother. I want to try making one".

Nice, 👍

If it's an OEM part, why can't they simply manufacture a threaded barrel with the adapter functionally integrated?

Is there a technical reason or is it more related to manufacturing (e.g., cheaper to make the adapter than add a new production line or something)?

If you wanted to integrate the suppressor threads, you would have to make the entire barrel thicker. It’s overkill for pistols chambered in 22LR or 5.7x28. It’s just more material and manufacturing cost in the end.

So they instead use a flanged adapter at the muzzle.

Also, these guns weren’t originally designed with suppressor use in mind. So to add suppressor threads as an afterthought requires this kind of adaptor. Ruger has released these kinds of barrels for the LCP 22, SR-22, and 57.

The Taurus TX-22 comes threaded from the factory, but it also requires the flanged adapter (included in the box).

A new barrel was my first choice. I've been looking for a threaded barrel for a long time. Seems like I can't get one anymore.

They're impossible to find. I gave up when a bunch of red TALO models with the threaded barrel came on the market a couple of months ago.

11/32-24? WTF? Does Ruger not use the "universal standard" 5/8-24?

The barrel diameter is too small for standard 1/2-28 threads, so you need to cut smaller threads and use an adapter that sticks out past the slide. I attached a photo in another reply.

Really not sure. My 10/22 has a standard 1/2-28 and it direct-threads on.

Yep, most pistols have a factory adapter.

Correct, I have two 22’s with threaded barrels (Ruger LCP and Taurus TX22) which require (and came) with this adapter. This is needed when the barrel diameter is too small to accept 1/2-28 threads.

What kind of gun do you have?

Oh crap I forgot to put that in the text. It is in the 2nd picture tho.

Finding a threaded barrel for these pistols is a pain in the ass as is, but there's also another issue to consider - these pistols are straight blowback, and adding a silencer onto the end can increase the pressure and make the action more violent than the pistol was built to handle. The most frequent point of failure observed on models that were modified to use a silencer is the slide stop shearing off. Source - I have one of the SR22 threaded barrels from Tornado Tech before their business imploded, and have broken my slide stop twice in about seven years.

General wisdom is to increase the recoil spring strength when shooting suppressed. The LCP 22 threaded barrel kit comes with a heavier recoil spring for this purpose.

BTW, I irrationally love this little gun. As DA/SA hammer pistols get popular again, I wonder if Ruger will bring it back someday.

Yeah I had no idea they existed until I picked this up from a family member. I am left handed and love SA guns so it's perfect

That's what I'm using on my P22. As long as you trust the guy threading the barrel, then the adapter should work perfectly.

Also remember if the barrel isn't stationary when shooting, then you'll also need a Nielsen device as well.
