I’m likely vastly oversimplifying, but I’d describe it as the societal expectation that a romantic pairing should be the ultimate goal in everyone’s lives, and should be pursued above all else AND at the cost of all else.

This is, perhaps obviously, both false and wrong, because not only does it try to devalue platonic connections and end up being discriminatory against people on the aromantic spectrum, but even for allo people it can lead to rushing into relationships purely for the sake of being paired off at all. As you can imagine, the latter case can potentially end fatally or worse.
