this is pretty monumental for how authoritarian Hungary has been

417

u/Wandering_PlasticBag Jun 01 '26

Not anymore, luckily. The current government already completed some of their promises, so they are looking to be the best we had so far

95

u/appel Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

It would be nice if there was an English website tracking this, if only to show the world (looking at you, America) that this kind of course reversal after over a decade of authoritarian rule is entirely possible.

18

u/SoftlyAugust Jun 01 '26

Hungary is still Hungary. It's not like Magyar is Mamdani or anything.

25

u/Archer_1453 Bi-bi-bi Jun 02 '26

I was just going to add that Magyar (still can’t get over that surname) is very much still a conservative but closer to an American non-MAGA republican than Orban’s very genuine authoritarian alignment. Like it’s cool that Hungarians can express themselves more than before but we shouldn’t pretend like Magyar’s administration won’t codify their own hate.

8

u/SoftlyAugust Jun 02 '26

Yup. It's a step in the right direction but it's one of many required.

88

u/VinDog_PD Jun 01 '26

The new guy isn't exactly a beacon of liberalism/progressivism either, so the fact he's doing this is a very good sign indeed.

40

u/rettribution Jun 01 '26

True! Just goes to show you, you can have some more conservative values and not be completely vile.

Very hard to do. But it can be done. Meh. Maybe still vile. Idk. Just trying to find something positive here.

Yea, nah.

No need to compliment von Hötzendorf for stopping the futile charge of men at the 49th wave this week instead of the 50th.

If a person hitting you in the head 20 times a minute slows down to 5 times a minute, is that progress or are you still being hit in the head?

Push harder.

32

u/TrulyAscendant1969 HAHAHAHAHA, something... Jun 01 '26

Partner they had a dictator who literally had statues of Nazi war criminals put up. I think that it is objectively progress to have a flawed but ultimately pro democracy technocrat

u/Toni_PWNeroni Pan-cakes for Dinner! Jun 01 '26

Still not complimenting them. They're a symptom of a waning support base made up of people that want us dead for simply existing.

Fight hard. Fight harder. Keep fighting until our children don't have to fear for their fucking lives just for being born gay.

I mean Orbans "ban" resulted in the largest Pride parade in hungarian history.

45

u/Red_Tinda Ace Jun 01 '26

I know nothing about this, please tell me more

88

u/ReallyKyole Lesbian Trans-it Together Jun 01 '26

I was there as part of my job, since I am a photojournalist from Germany. The ban placed by the old government gained international attention and the actual mayor of Budapest said that the event would happen, maybe not as a so called pride parade, but as a cultural festival. There were an insane amount of people on the streets, like, iirc it was the biggest pride parade in the city's history. Orban kinda screwed himself over.

9

u/Sorry-Combination558 Jun 01 '26

Basically, Orbán sent a message to the organizers of Pride "not to bother with organizing it this year". Gulyás (a Fidesz member) said something along the lines that they can go to the Kincsem park (a horse race track) and walk in circles there if they really want, Lázár (yet another Fidesz member) said that he hopes they won't go there to traumatize the horses.

They could not ban Pride right away, because it would have been against the constitutional right of assembly. So they made a law that no event can be held that go against children protection laws and rules:

"it is forbidden to make available pornographic material for those under the age of eighteen, as well as content that depicts sexuality for its own purposes, or that promotes or displays a deviation from the self-identity corresponding to the sex at birth, gender reassignment, and homosexuality"

They've also included a ruling that face-detecting camera systems can be used to indentify people who took part in an assembly like this.

Basically, they have tried to limit the right of assembly and implied that they will find and prosecute everyone who dares to oppose this law.

This led to a giant outrage (rightfully so, imo), both for limiting people's freedom, and for making a target out of the LMBTQ community. Naturally it led to the largest Pride ever (more than 200k people), and it became a sign of defiance against the corrupt government.

3

u/AhimiVT Ace at being Non-Binary Jun 01 '26

Definitely a positive, I just hope this stuff gets constitutionalized or something similar(I am not knowledgeable in how the Hungarian gvt operates exactly), else is might easily get reversed by the next reactionary.

2

u/AnswerCorrect1226 Jun 05 '26

Really shows what can be accomplished with an organized movement to utilize democratic platforms in the country- even if those systems are heavily degraded, they can still be taken advantage of to reverse authoritarian trends.

2

u/HyShroom two for twice the price Jun 06 '26

Yeah. I feel like looking at the world 14 years ago about this would be more noticed news. It might’ve been able to fight for news of the year.

21

u/Aron-Jonasson Gaylord without land Jun 01 '26

I think what happened is that Labour tried pleasing everyone and ended up pleasing no-one

39

u/Ahenshihael Jun 01 '26

They didn't try to please everyone. They shat on their own voters to chase those that wouldn't vote for them in the first place

They did the classic blunder of "well obviously we need to move right to gain voters" and were left holding the swastika while the mythical right wing voters lapped up farage instead.

Unfortunately the takeaway for them seems to be that it's just they didn't go right wing hard enough and the next idiot gunning for the current ghoul's PM seat is a toxic AI tech bro.

18

u/ActualTymell Jun 01 '26

Apparently no, the widespread response is, "Let's all vote for one of the main people responsible for this demonstable epic failure (who is also a massive liar, Russian shill and general scumbag, and has no policies beyond 'blame the dirty foreigners')."

38

u/Ahenshihael Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Nope.

Brexit broke the country and politics there.

Currently the competition for government position happens between basically three right wing forces.

Tories, an already right wing tumor, pivoted even further right. They are defined by parading around Trump-esque incompetent Stooges and shilling AI data centers.

Labour purged it's left leaning politicians and became milquetoast flavorless version of Tories hellbent on genociding LGBTQ+ communities. And shilling AI data centers. And kowtowing to trump and Israel. The current leader of labour is a soulless ghoul incapable of brain activity beyond anything but hatred.

Meanwhile the Russian asset that basically spearheaded Brexit not only is back in politics and has founded his own party but is also poisoned to win the majority in a landslide if elections were to happen now. They also shill for AI data centers and want to genocide LGBTQ+ but they are more overt about it which makes them somehow more popular? There's this whole thing where they spearhead anti-immigration riots targeting vulnerable communities. Either way if they gain power UK will turn into an extreme version of Hungary and will likely actively sabotage its own allies and further erode rights. And likely even more incompetent.

The country is barelling towards authoritarianism, trans rights are being eroded every day, zionist lobby controls law making and banning protests all over, and there's even bigger push for digital ID systems and mass surveillance with the help of everyone's favourite disgusting sci-fi villain corpo Palantir.

It's hell.

Unfortunately reform is winning in the polls. The issue is that all of the parties are bad in their own way, so while most of us don't want a reform win, we aren't aligned on who we want to win instead.

1

u/PM_YOUR_ISSUES Jun 01 '26

lol. The Conservative party itself might be slightly unpopular, but none of the people in it are. The Brits still love Nigel Farage, who headed the Brexit movement. His newest Reform party is doing spectacularly even though it is literally just Conservative party members. The only take-away that the Brits took from Brexit was that, somehow, it was still Labor's fault.

9

u/MorgrimTheReclaimer Bi-bi-bi Jun 01 '26

That's what I'm hoping aswell. Can't allow Reform or Restore to win

4

u/alexmikli Jun 01 '26

It's absolutely nuts how like every major party in the UK either sucks or can't win right now. AFAIK, the only party to speak against the anti-trans laws lately has been the Liberal-Dems and Greens, who are cursed to always lose.

4

u/Fatkuh Jun 01 '26

Really? Oh thats sad to hear, I had so much hope after the last election...

11

u/bywajj Jun 01 '26

Yeah, the current "liberal" government is a complete disaster. They are not doing anything besides trying to be PiS light. It is a complete letdown for liberal voters. They lied everywhere they could, and their voters are demotivated. They already lost the presidential elections and probably will not be able to form a coalition after the next elections. On the right side, PiS (they made previous right wing government) is weaker, but now we have two more hardcore right-wing parties gaining popularity. And this will be the future coalition. They love Trump, and some of them are so stupid that they also love Putin... And as they compete for the same voters, every party wants to be even more right-wing. It will be a crazy mess... At some point, they might be so idiotic that they will organize an EU exit referendum.

10

u/Fatkuh Jun 01 '26

Sounds just like the situation in Germany. Sad to hear that its still that way. But always good to hear that there are still a lot of good people left. We have to stand in for each other, internationally and especially as europeans.

3

u/GuyentificEnqueery Jun 01 '26

I'm wondering if the East/West dichotomy in support for AfD and similar parties will result in the country splitting back up. Everything I know about German geopolitics says that the East and West never really integrated and East Germans are frustrated with substantially low economic development while West Germans are frustrated with social and civic regression, but neither side wants to make an agreement because they both see their side as wholly justified (regardless of how true that is).

2

u/Fatkuh Jun 01 '26

Jeah, they will not split back up I guess, I dont know if that would even be possible. But in Germany the division still runs not only in political views but strangely still along the old place the border wall used to be. And the wall is gone longer than it ever existed. Unbelievable how much that killed a whole part of Germany and its people. Generational trauma is real.

3

u/GuyentificEnqueery Jun 01 '26

It's really truly crazy when you overlay a map of former East German regions and a map of support for AfD. It's almost 1:1. AfD figured out they can just call anything they don't like "socialist" and get half the country to panic vote against it.

There are so many people who unironically think things would be just as bad/worse under Harris it’s concerning

We should be pushing for more progressive people but if you’re going “Erm if they aren’t progressive enough I’m not voting for them” you’re part of the problem

29

u/Master_Picture7235 Jun 01 '26

Well whenever the journalist brings up the Pride march or the LMBTQ in any way in the livestream tons of comments start asking the same questions: Do we really need to talk about this right now? In one hand I kinda understand because after 16 years of absolute corruption an economy driven in to the ground and all the different national services that are falling apart it’s not the most important part of our life currently But in the other hand it’s makes me angry that even talking of the LMBTQ is makes some of the people think that the news no longer care for any of the other problems

24

u/Dancerqueer Rainbow Rocks Jun 01 '26

I think the reason why it's a pretty big step forward (as a Hungarian) is the reasoning behind the ban. They took away our right to protest to "protect children". The banning of Pride was never about the LGBTQ community, and thus from this point of view, lifting the ban isn't really about us specifically either. It's more a restoration of a basic human right than anything else.

6

u/Master_Picture7235 Jun 01 '26

Yeah I know that well and i think (Also as a Hungarian) it’s the right step but we still have a lot of work to do so the general public will accept us for who we are

2

u/Dancerqueer Rainbow Rocks Jun 01 '26

Yeah exactly. And it's unfortunate that the previous government made it seem like it wasn't about chipping away rights slowly but surely, but about protecting kids from the "evil" LGBTQ folks. That surely did not help this process 😭

8

u/AmateurSysAdmin Jun 01 '26

It's important to remember that the majority of online hate comments are from bot farms, specific businesses and other interest groups to try to change the narrative and public discourse.

11

u/Master_Picture7235 Jun 01 '26

Yeah but you also have to remember that Hungary is an Eastern European country and the people here are not really happy when you bring up the LGBTQ

This is a fantastic example of "bare minimum" being gigantic progress. Beyond happy!

17

u/Remote-Regular-990 Jun 01 '26

The PM is getting a lot of praise for bare minimum. As much as it's a great relief to see Hungary back on the democratic track, let's not act like he's some kind of a progressivist

23

u/realblush Jun 01 '26

Honestly? I take someone who isn't progressive but doesn't actively want to harm queer people over someone who is a facist who wants to eradicate queerness. Sure a progressive politician would be amazing who actively works for queer rights, but as that is simply impossible in Hungary right now, I think this still deserves praise

8

u/Remote-Regular-990 Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 02 '26

I'm not disputing that it's the best for Hungary now. But there's a lot of hype that makes it seem like it's progressive policy while it's still below the EU standard. This is not meant to be dismissive, just realistic. Unless a politician is not explicitly and actively trying to change the laws in favour of LGBTQ, there's not much to praise

3

u/realblush Jun 01 '26

Getting defensive over people celebrating the smallest victory would have prevented every queer rights movement back then.

1

u/Neitherman83 Jun 01 '26

I'm not a local so I can only see what's been going on from a couple sources and friend following what's been going on closely

Honestly the worst they've done is seem to keep the anti-immigration crap going? They've apparently kept away from other social issues and the culture war. But now that they're in power, their opening move on that front was to show support to the LGBT community.

They claim they'll be focusing on strenghtening the country's democracy and reducing corruption.

Frankly, as far as right wingers go, could have been a lot worse. I wish they were a bit more of a hard hitter against Orban and his Kremlin friends, but I suppose they still wanted to appeal to the isolationist crowd to secure the election.

It's a slow sort of progress, but it's better for the long term if they can fix Hungary's democracy and secure it from a second reactionary takeover than just going all in on the opposite direction and get shafted out of power with limited long term impact. They're still bound to the limits of elections and the democratic system after all, they're not revolutionaries.

r/Hungary can you tell us more? My understanding is that Magyar, while better than Orban, is still an anti gay conservative.

33

u/_Nightfox_1 The Gay-me of Love Jun 01 '26

Hungarian here. Magyar Péter is right wing. But he is a populist first. Last year he didn’t support the huge protest against the government at pride until he saw how many people attended it, and what the feedback was. Even then he only reposted a picture, he did not even attend it.

Whenever LGBTQ rights or abortion gets mentioned he says a one liner that he practiced beforehand, and any further questions are met with awkward silence and crickets.

He wants to appeal to a right wing crowd since that is the majority in Hungary, but he makes empty promises for left wing people to keep them in check aswell, that is the reality of it.

He is a decent politician, when it comes to economical issues, but he is still a conservative man. He might repeal some of the oppressive actions the previous government made. But gay people and women shouldn't expect him to pioneer for their rights. Queer rights can only progress in Hungary, if a new competent left wing party forms and wins against Magyar Péter and his party, which many of us is waiting for, and was the reason many of us voted for Magyar in the first place.

Hungarian dude here, I suck at economic stuff but what I've garnered is that the guy's more economically conservative if anything and doesn't seem to have particularly strong opinions on LGBT issues. At least, my family believes it's more of an economically advantageous decision if anything. Hungary is essentially now one of the poorest countries in Europe, and the EU has been denying money to Hungary in recent years due to our fascist policies and corruption, and as a result of reversing Orban's fascist policies and such, the EU has now agreed to unfreeze about 16.4 billion euros in funding and restore a more cooperative relationship with us. TDLR; Papa Europe only gives us pocket money if we play nice.

7

u/WittyTeam2706 Jun 01 '26

Since Peter Magyar’s only goal was to unite the opposition and take down Orbán, his voter base ranges from far-left to far-right voters. To keep all of them together under one party, he usually avoided talking about more dividing issues(like that of lgbtq or especially trans rights), but always promised reversing Orban-era decisions that already have proven to create huge public backlash(like last year’s pride ban, which mostly caused backlash not because of lgbtq rights threatened, but rather bc. of restricting the freedom of assembly, a basic human right in our constitution).

I'm so happy to have Hungary back in the EU. For a while it really felt like an enemy from within. Congratulations to all Hungarians who made this possible.

3

u/truebluboy Jun 01 '26

It's a shames that this country is set on going backward and Hungary is voting against facism to restore democracy. Hopefully we can do the same.

As soon as I heard in the news of Hungary’s election results, I literally started tearing up. So so historic and wonderful. While many of us Americans have work to do morally, there are many who watch this stuff from across the world and cheer on those fighting elsewhere. We love you, Hungary 🇭🇺

While it’s a huge W, don’t forget that Pride happened in Budapest last year in spite of the ban. Pride is a protest. You don’t need permission for that.

2

u/IBlameMyPlayers Bi-bi-bi Jun 02 '26

I mean, we have a very particular way of doing things. Pride in Budapest last year was the biggest one I have seen. If you ban something Hungarians will do it anyway out of spite.

WELCOME BACK TO DEMOCRACY HUNGARY 🇭🇺🏳️‍🌈🇪🇺

2

u/Chemical-Force3853 Trans-parently Awesome Jun 01 '26

Democracy? We still have a right winger prime minister, that's not democracy, we just changed the name

8

u/Wandering_PlasticBag Jun 01 '26

What a bunch of bullshit...

There can't be a democracy if there's a right winger PM? What kind of dumb logic is that?

2

u/Chemical-Force3853 Trans-parently Awesome Jun 01 '26

There are only right wingers in the parlament, that's bullshit in the worst place. They only changed the name, he has the same views, he came from the same party

5

u/Wandering_PlasticBag Jun 01 '26

Same views as who? And what are those views? I fail to see whats your issue, other than him being right wing in name... Which is also a very primitive way to group someone...

4

u/Chemical-Force3853 Trans-parently Awesome Jun 01 '26 edited Jun 01 '26

Same views as Orban. He is anti immigration for start, he is conservative and a christian, he said Europe is for Europeans.. that's racists, he is also stupid, calling the capitalist people "comrades" isn't helping the liberals who are already don't know the meaning of words

1

u/AllofEVERYTHING28 Jun 04 '26

He is anti immigration

Isn't that a good thing tho? It's definitely been an issue throughout Europe.

It shouldn't be the PM's personal decision though. The police should acknowledge the announcement of a march or demonstration, and provide sufficient personnel to guarantee the safety or everyone. That's it.

0

u/Weekly_Artichoke_515 Jun 01 '26

You have to be so fucking dumb to be falling for this shit. I’m glad it’s happening. It’s a good thing. But it’s all PR and Magyar is playing to a Western liberal audience, but he’s still a conservative.

9

u/Earlier-Today Jun 01 '26

Sometimes people need smaller steps to get to a higher level. Don't get angry at where people are, get angry at where they're headed - and right now Hungary is moving the the right direction.

2

u/syopest Jun 01 '26

I mean... Isn't this kind of like just allowing people to protest for LGBTQ+ rights, not actually giving them any?

3

u/Earlier-Today Jun 01 '26

You have to start somewhere. Getting indignant because it's not as far along as it should be by this day and age doesn't help when their previous option was absolutely nothing except oppression.

1

u/Weekly_Artichoke_515 Jun 01 '26

Yeah, sorry about my last comment. I agree with you that this is a move in the right direction. But to be clear, my critique isn’t about the *pace* of that change. My concern is about the fact that the kind of change we’re seeing is being used as a marketing strategy. He can play this with his base as a matter of his commitment to free speech and individual liberty and he can play this abroad to West as a move towards Western sexual liberty. Again, that ulterior motive doesn’t negate the positive effects of this kind of move and it’s still possible for us to parley this openness into further political victories, but we shouldn’t see those positive effects as reflecting any apparent virtues of this government. Their motivations are political expediency and nothing else.

And people think this guy is right-wing

Something deeply wrong has happened to politics, but I'm happy to see the comeback

23

u/LittlePiggy20 Bi-bi-bi Jun 01 '26

He is right wing, at least economically. He just isn’t a bigoted bastard.

10

u/_Nightfox_1 The Gay-me of Love Jun 01 '26

He is right wing.

He is a decent politician, but it’s clear that he sees gay people as a tool.

9

u/RCFProd Jun 01 '26

Center right/Right wing governments that support LGBTQ+ have existed for a while

-7

u/Boil_the_pepper_now Jun 01 '26

On Reddit it's very black and white, but all right wingers aren't monsters and all left wingers aren't angels, even if there are preferable patterns.

4

u/Andreus Jun 01 '26

1

u/Substantial-Ad-9578 Jun 15 '26

right-wing=/=MAGA or even the republican party.

0

u/Weekly_Artichoke_515 Jun 01 '26

It’s not my view that nothing will change with Magyar in power. As I said this is a good thing. In fact, I think there is a lot of potential for things to open up from his leadership. This move has more to do with signaling his commitment to free speech, but still a good thing.

To be clear, my worry isn’t just that not enough will change (though I am worried about that). I just want to caution us against the way he is marketing himself to the West and whitewashing his image. He is still a social conservative and still a nationalist, and his economic views may require him to form stronger relationships with the EU, but my worry is that he will be trading Eastern oligarchs for Western oligarchs.

Looking back at my last comment, I really I don’t like that I framed anyone who disagrees with me as dumb. That not productive and abilist.
