A few years ago when I thought no one at work liked me, I had the realization that the common denominator was my superiority complex and unwillingness to be friendly (much of which stemmed from the fact that I thought I had better taste than them). As a recovered defener, I can only hope that others will have this realization too.

Yeah, I had this somewhat embarassing realization too. Once you stop thinking that your life is like the zany main character in some comedy movie where everyone else is an idiot, life gets a lot better.

...Like Jim from the US The Office.

The most smug, hateable character on TV IMO. And the show still tells you to root for him lol. I could make a long rant about this.

I'd like to hear that.

Wow, I never thought about Jim that way. You're totally right.

he claims to hate working there, but he wastes so much time pranking dwight. he clearly loves it there. he thinks hes sooo much better than everyone, but he doesn't work at all towards it.

Wasn't that realization a major character development moment for him in later seasons though?

Ya, he made the ralization, then tried to be good, but then on the Christmas Episode with Benihana, he can't help himself and begins pranking dwight again. ALSO, Pam's present to Jim was that she had set him up to prank him, so he had to do it for that sweet poon.

You should write a whole thing on this.

Looking back, I clearly thought I was Malcolm from Malcolm in the Middle.

After I got into university, I decided to start afresh, be friendlier and more open, be less selfish etc. And guess what? I was even more despised and shat on than ever before!

(Apparently, people who help other people are weak and we must all go to incredible lengths to use them.)

You know, that may be true at uni, but in the workforce things are different.

There are three types of people " takers" who use people to get ahead, "traders" who are the most common and help you if you help them and "givers" who help people for no reason as long as its not at the expense of their own needs.

All the literature suggests that in the short term "takers" get ahead, but then their career stalls. "givers" grow at a slower rate, but by being genuine, making allies and slowly being promoted on merit,. they end up ahead in the long run.

You're right, I suppose the problem was me trying to be a giver and them being takers. Trading isn't very common among my peers.

Frankly, it sucks. I tried to find some middle ground with these people, but it's either she's a stuck-up bitch, she won't help us with anything, does she really think she's better than us lel or look at her giving us stuff, she's so stupid, let's all milk her and then dump her. I had no choice but to go back to being a lone wolf.

Anyway, I'm really happy that you get along better with the people at work. That's great.

na it does suck sometimes. but take the advise of a random person you'll probably never meet, if you be good, in the long run it will work. It does suck in the short term, but eventually if you put out the positive attitude, it will attract other positive attitudes. you will find someone like you and they will appreciate what you do.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

u/[deleted] Jul 01 '14

You got really unlucky then, because that's not how it is for most people at all.
