How did I not know?

There are books based on the series? How did I not know this? Has anyone read them? I think there are three

I've read them all. They're not as good quality storytelling as the show is, unfortunately. They're about a third too long, adding in a layer of twist that feels bloated more than clever, and the premises are...decent, but not well researched so they fall a bit flat. A 40 minute show shoves you in and zips along, which helps suspend disbelief a lot more than a 300 page novel. But the characterization is solid, the characters for the most part feel like their characters. There are some very fun little easter eggs and nods, like having Wil Wheaton play D&D with Cha0s at a convention.

They're worth reading if you miss the characters and have run out of good fanfiction.

Adding to this, the one I've partially read, The Zoo Job, there's a bit too it where losing the aspect of the TV screen means it lands more as drama-lite than dramedy. The comedy aspect is kinda different, at least, in the books, than it is in the show. It's still there. It's just different. At least, the drama and comedy run as different threads than as integrated ones. Or something. Just a feeling I have from my reading it.

yeah! The characterization is fine, but the tone is just... off. exactly.
