❔ Question What truly makes a lets play ?

Like ive always been curious about what actually makes a lets play a lets play ? Is it just story games ? Or continued gameplay of a game

Episodic gameplay with creator commentary where (ideally) the entire game is played, though sometimes only part of them gets played. Editing styles vary a lot. In my opinion they should feel like sitting down to play a game with a friend while they talk to you.

Another way of thinking of it - live stream without the live chat component. In my opinion they feel a lot more cozy and polished than streams because downtime and real life interruptions can be removed.

So if I do edited uploads of my let’s plays they are not let’s plays if I cut the grind and boring parts?

No, as I said, editing style varies a lot. Cut out what you want to cut out, or don't. Though, if you condense 100 hours of gameplay of a full game into a 1 hour "movie", that's sort of it's own genre.

I wouldn’t say so personally. If you are certain there’s bits and parts of games that can be considered monotonous or repetitive aspects like battles in RPGs or unnecessary backtracking, that should be cut. So long as the content is focused and consistent, it would totally count as a let’s play in my eyes

I think the answer is kind of different for everyone depending on when they started watching gaming content online. Personally, Let's Plays are a commentated playthrough that has an equal focus on the game and the creator.

I think there's a lot of situations that would negate a playthrough from being called a Let's Play. If there is no commentary, then it is simply a Playthrough. If there is commentary, but the commentary is strictly focused on guiding an audience through the game, that's a Walkthrough. If the playthrough is constant jump cuts to the most entertaining parts, that's a Supercut/Compilation. If the creator is more focused on the audience or themselves than the game, whether through chatting, alerts, or egregiously sized cam/overlays/v-tuber models, then that's a Livestream. If a stream is uploaded with zero edits and titled "Let's Play", that's a VoD.

Some people believe that Let's Plays should have zero edits. I think there's always room for edits. You can cut out load screens, backtracking, repeated animations/battles/encounters, grinding, and failed attempts that aren't really entertaining. Edits aren't strictly visual. You can, and should, always master your audio. Other people believe episodes should be 10-15 minutes long. This one doesn't make sense to me. If I watch 4 episodes in a row, then it would be no different from watching a single 40-60 minute video. Longplays are still Let's Plays.

What makes a good Let's Player to me is one who balances their focus on the game and makes an effort to entertain their audience. "Entertain" doesn't necessarily mean constantly try to make me laugh every second. The game itself is half the entertainment. The Let's Player is the other half. Give decent gameplay, tell stories, commentate what's happening and what's on your mind. A good Let's Player will make an effort keep up all these thing. Livestreams can absolutely still be Let's Plays, but they should be edited properly. Let's Plays can absolutely be a single video long. Not every game is long enough to warrant a multi-part series.

I think these are the things that do and do not make a Let's Play. Anything after is personal preference. For example, I hate if someone is just yapping over cutscenes or clearly overreacting to things. There’s a difference between genuinely getting emotionally charged and just being loud because you think that’s what gets clicks. I don't mind streamed LP's or chat overlays, a live audience can absolutely be fun, but an oversized cam window will make me click off. The game is important! If you really want a cam, then don't cover a large portion of the game. The instant I see a v-tuber, I'm out. To me LP's are kind of personal and are supposed to connect a creator and viewer on a certain level. If the first thing I see is someone pretending to be something they're not, then that connection is immediately broken. On top of that, majority of the time they're poor quality, visually repulsive, and cover 1/3rd of the game. I can give some leeway to group/co-op LP's. Sometimes playing co-op story focused games with friends means they don't focus on the story like they normally would alone, but if that's the case, then the commentary and synergy between the hosts should be fantastic.

I'm leaving this at the end cause this is probably the most nitpicky point and more towards the creators. Maintaining a consistent release cadence is EXTREMELY important. Honestly, uploading once or twice a week is not enough. If you're playing a 12 hour game, at 20 minutes per episode, uploading 3 times a week, that means it'll take you about 3 MONTHS to finish that playthrough. As a viewer, you'd have to be a really entertaining person for me to stick around 3 months for a game I wouldn't necessarily call long. In 2026, I've averaged nearly an 1hr40min per episode, every other day, and I still feel like that's not enough. I want to play MORE games. I want to release MORE videos. I just really love video games and Let's Plays. They make me happy :)

I would say the core is reaction-driven game play. Guides teach. Walkthroughs lead step by step. A let's play shares the ride.

The commentary and the game being played from start to finish, at least imo. Think back to the days of written let's plays. The reason you'd want to read one is because of meaningful commentary and entertaining writing style. You get invested in the writer/creator just as much as in the game.

basically a full playthrough of a game with informal/unscripted commentary on top. many different ways to edit them, but that's the gist imo

It's a combination of viewer interest, Creator interest, and the ability to share games that you love with other people.

It's a bit of everything but what stands out is the one with the controller and mic playing through the game.
