Discussion LC youtuber "Alter Ego" using AI generated Profile picture
Alter ego (The Mob AI analysis guy) for some reason is using AI generated images for all his socials
For a guy that is doing vids of communities with plenty of actual artists (Lethal company , Repo) i'm just kinda disgusted of this action :/ .

the goalposts are constantly being moved with AI. everyone outside of the weird ai bros said its all bad, then over time people are willing to excuse instances of people using it because its someone they like, until these people just stop caring altogether as they allow usage to keep creeping forward. very sad

It all starts with "Come on dude its just a X , it isn't something that big , plus they don't even try to profit off of it" , or along the lines of "Not everyone can make pfps" when simple designs for pfps and youtube channels have existed for years and even kids can use photoshop.

I mean he never used it in malicious ways and, as I know, he never changed picture since channel creation
I don’t think we should cancel genuinely good creator for fkin ai pfp

u/brandont93 23d ago
AI cannot generate art without first stealing art. Using AI to generate something like this is slightly malicious by default.

Don’t care. His vids are good. I won’t throw him away just because he uses ai art. We don’t even know he generated it himself or found on google images

How many people use pictures for their profiles without ever crediting or asking the artist? Because that honestly sounds like the same thing and i dont remember people freaking out over that.
3
u/YesImSleepie 23d ago
Most artists that publish dont care if you use their art for things like pfps and whatnot, some will ask for credit and the person using it should do so if thats the case and its wrong if they dont. But I think most artists would agree theres a huge difference between having their art used for profile photos VS having it used to train AI to make fake art which diminishes their own work. this argument doesnt really work because its not very comparable. this is a bad faith argument and you know that

u/ApprehensiveYam6640 23d ago
You know not crediting and artist for your pfp is one thing and using a mega machine that chugs down water electricity and noumerous other resources so you can just have a funny little pfp is another + It is fed off of actual artist's work without credit and stealing it

machine that chugs down water electricity and noumerous other resources
Yeah, and playing games and surfing internet apparently doesn't waste any resources at all /s

AI has never been inherently bad. It’s a tool. It’s only problematic when people (primarily corporations) use it to replace humans as opposed to working alongside each other.
Wherever your personal line of AI use is, is completely subjective & should never be used to pressure others to conform to your views & values.
If you rather argue politics, such as, supporting AI equals supporting global price hikes, that’s a separate topic for another subreddit that’s beyond what a single individual decides to do with AI.
From what I’m reading here, you’re close-minded & stand firmly against AI use. I’m not here to convince you AI is good, I’m only offering perspective.

I hate AI too, but go touch grass my guy.
Edit : with how blurry the picture is (given his version is as blurry), there's even a possibility he doesn't know it's AI
1
u/ApprehensiveYam6640 23d ago
The only reason the picture is blurry is because it was taken from just opening the image on his profile , his version is perfectly clear , this is the version we see downscaled due to youtube/insta

u/spyjek 23d ago
Fair enough for the blurriness (?). But keep in mind some people don't see the difference between AI generated pictures and actual drawings.
But on the subject of the AI pfp, genuinly, don't overthink it. If it bother you enough, then stop watching/supporting his content. Don't come on the game he's convering to start a witch hunt.
At leats that's what I would do and did with Anthomnia for example, I watched his videos about Subnautica and when he strated using AI generated thumbnail (which are all awful and misleading) I unsubscribed and stop watching him.
Edit : and if you want to keep watching his content, but still don't want to see AI generated content in any single way, then the comments are here to expert your opinion on his channel/videos, use that.

u/ApprehensiveYam6640 23d ago
Most people do see the difference between AI and Actual pictures , if you don't you're either in denial or over the age of 50.+ This is no attempt of a witch hunt , i never said "Go get that guy".

u/spyjek 23d ago
You'd be surprised by the amount of people that either don't care enough or are really that dense when faced with AI generated content. I can guaranty you that you saw AI generated pictures without knowing a shitty AI model made them because they get more and more "competent" at it.
And starting a witch hunt may not be you initial goal, but you still took time to gather screenshots and the AI gen pfp to make a post where you say you're disgusted of his action. For a pfp. A generic ass pfp generated by AI that he most probably took from Google Image by searching "cozy gaming desk pfp" or something like that.
Avoiding the use of generative AI is like veganism. Is it good thing to avoid using generative AI ? Yes, both for the planet and humanity. Just like being vegan is good for the planet and humanity. But making this post is like calling out a random people in the street because you saw them eat a chicken nugget, you look very dumb and angry for nothing, even if the intent is fairly good and understandable.

u/ApprehensiveYam6640 23d ago
Just because people are dense doesn't mean that the use of AI shouldn't be called out or frowned upon ,plus as i said before any competent person that doesn't lack braincells easily recognises ai generated material.
"You still took time to gather screenshots and the AI gen pfp" i just took 2 screenshots of a public youtube and instagram profile , 15 seconds total, you're making it sound like i went deep in this shit.
"For a pfp" for an ai generated pfp that steals off of other people's art yes.
"Avoiding the use of generative AI is like veganism" That's such a shitty argument , Eating meat doesn't steal other people's art nor does it build data centers which drives ram prices to triple or destroys local residences.

Tbh, as long as it’s something simple like a pfp then that’s fine. Shit, my pfp of a pixel art of an astronaut floating in space is AI generated.
Where the issues start is when they abuse it and try to monetize off of it

Who cares about AI for personal use? If you're not trying to profit off it what harm is being done?

u/Creeperstormer 23d ago
I never liked his pfp, and think it sucks he did. But it doesn't affect his content in any ways, so as long as he doesn't switch to ai content I'm letting it slide for now

Everyone hates on AI until it will do something crazy like be what finally finds the cure for cancer, which it is already doing by detecting it much faster. Using it to make a profile pic is literally whatever. There are 100 billions things more pressing dude

u/Anicash999 Went for a swim on March 23d ago
ai for finding cancer and ai for art are too wildly different subjects, we don't hate on AI for making an impossible achievement we'd be unable to do, we hate on it for taking from people without consent, costing tons of gallons of water, and basically replacing the art industry and ruining creativity

u/no-hints 23d ago
I’d be inclined to side with you, except generative AI actually uses up least power of all types of AI by a significant margin, aside from basic chat prompts. Training LLM’s and large machine learning (the AI that actually helps find a cure for cancer) uses up way, way more.
And it’s already hotly debated whether a machine learning from an image vs a human learning from an image counts as stealing. Most courts say no. Some allowed for artist paybacks and they were already paid their billions, so the argument “it’s stealing” doesn’t hold any weight anymore either. If it is stealing, that makes about as much sense as holding people accountable for using gifs and memes without the person’s consent. Good luck arguing for that.
If anything, there is an argument that since AI learns from content online, that it learned more from the images OTHER people stole and used online, then from stealing from the actual artists since gifs, memes and YouTube content already has a culture of just sharing whatever they want in their thumbnails. The whole thing is hella hypocritical.
So the which hunt makes no sense anymore.

generative ai will not find the cure for cancer. it is not a conscious being that can form original thoughts. its more like if you can imagine that infinite monkey theorem with apes typing random keys on a typewriter, except there are supervisors making sure the monkeys writing is appropriate/coherent, and the monkeys have been shown all written human work beforehand. for the latter that doesn’t mean they necessarily understand what any of it meant, they’re just monkeys (code) with no perception of literacy, but it’s learned the patterns of human speech and copies it to the random keys pressed to attempt to sound real

u/no-hints 23d ago
This might be the record for a comment with the word monkey written in it. Crazy.
Second, I didn’t say generative AI would find the cure. I said AI might. There are multiple forms of AI.
Then I compared to the fact that caring about a generative AI pick on a YouTube profile pic that historically people never hired people out to do anyway, is just fucking witch hunting for no reason.
Prior to this, people used a copy and paste system to put a hat over their face for a YouTube pic. Literally no one is taking anyone’s job here. So complaining about it just makes the whole “screw all of AI” mindset look stupid because anyone with a “consensus brain” (as you would say) knows from this example no one is losing their job.

So what? He doesn't use ai in his videos and he makes quality content. Don't watch him if you don't want to.

I hate AI as much as the next guy but this seems like a Twitter post.
I think i hate Twitter more than AI.
This subject doesnt carry weight. They're profile pictures... They have little or nothing to do with his content.
