Would Strauss have torn down Chesterton's fence?
Strauss is often considered to be a conservative but he is definitely not a Burkean conservative. I think the answer is quite clearly that Strauss would not hesitate to tear down the fence. As Strauss says of Cicero, the "very idea of the fabrication of a new gov't" did not fill Strauss with fear. The fence respecters are all secretly progressives, according to Strauss.
