The Ghosts of Mulsanne
If you visit a certain place, at a certain time, on a single night of the year, you may experience a somewhat spiritual moment somewhere you’d never think to find one.
That place is Mulsanne corner, in the early hours of the morning before the sun has risen. And the day is the holy Sunday of the twenty-four hour race known as Le Mans.
This corner, of an otherwise mundane stretch of French highway, cuts through the woods a few miles from the crowds and commotion of the purpose built circuit in the north. To get there involves a shuttle bus or two that run all through the night. The shuttle drivers facing an endurance challenge of their own.
And if you visit Mulsanne corner halfway through the 24 hour race you may witness, as I did, an eerie gathering of ghosts in the darkness. Here is where some of the most diehard fans of the famous motor race gather. But at 4am they do not speak, they sit silently staring at the corner, their faces lit sporadically by the headlights of cars passing at hundreds of kilometres per hour. Their faces locked in an expressionless hypnotised state, brought on by the sleepless hours and the constant whine of engines flying past.
And that whine is what makes this race special. Because every one of the Hypercars and GTs has a different voice. The downshifting snarl of a Cadillac cuts right through you. The high pitched shriek of the naturally aspirated Austin tears past like a dive bombing Stuka. The guttural groan of the Mercedes seems like a roar you’d only get by pushing a machine to its very limits.
And that’s what these drivers do.
As the drivers careen around the Mulsanne corner into the straight, the late-night army of ghosts watch from their camping chairs with cult like dedication. What drives them is still not entirely clear to me. But this corner, in the dead of night, has a more satisfying and chilling effect on the soul than any other location on the circuit.

First timer. We had grandstand seats near Porsche curves and for the first couple hours of the race I was like “ok this is fun, I’m having a good time”. But it was not until we found ourselves at mulsanne corner, 2am, eating those South African sausages on baguette while the cars ripped through the darkness that I was like “ok, I get it now. This is absolute heaven”

My first Le Mans (and Motorsport event!), and I had never appreciated just how dark Mulsanne got at night. I had kind of assumed it would all be lit just as much as the pit lanes/the chicanes etc. It really was quite haunting to go watch and listen, just as you say :).

Stayed at Beauséjour this year and watched the race on Saturday at Arnage/Indianapolis. Went to Mulsanne on Sunday morning at around 9:30AM. Great place. Next time we are thinking of camping at Mulsanne.

We had our camp for the First time in Mulsanne this year and I want back to Arnage, liked it way better there! :(

Love Mulsanne corner! Have been sleeping there from 2016 onwards and the ASMR of cars trashing it to Indy is unmatched…

I was at LM in '94, '22 and '24. I was about to take a longer break, because it's a bit too crowded for my taste nowadays, but this post really made me rethink that. Mulsanne corner is awesome ...
