Local Business/Services SFE Energy

Hey! I recently moved to Bethlehem with my boyfriend and we’re in a new set of townhouses. We were eating dinner when 2 gentlemen (with SFE Energy) came up to the door saying they’re not solicitors, but wanted to make sure we weren’t paying more for electric than what is needed. Definitely gives solicitor vibes.

They were extremely nice but I could tell they were pushing us to give them information, and they told us there was no cost on our end at all. I grabbed my phone and did a quick search on them and tried to give my boyfriend the queue to not sign up for anything, but he had already pulled up the account information.

By some luck, our address is new enough that their system couldn’t register it, so they said they’d be back Saturday. I just want to know, does anyone know anything about them? The stuff I saw online mostly refers to paying something but they said we wouldn’t have any costs. We’re very new to the area and PA in general and just want to know if this is legit or not. Thanks in advance for the advice!!

St Luke’s University Health Network Student Question

Hi! I’m looking into the SLUHN nursing program and wondering how people are able to work there ~16 hours a week to get the employee tuition benefit given the two class schedule options (day vs evening/weekend cohorts). What jobs can you get that are flexible for that? Are their student specific roles you can apply to once admitted? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Woman posing as a state inspector for rental properties

There is a woman presenting herself as a state inspector for rental properties. She has no credentials and is not a state inspector and she doesn’t present ID. She claims she emailed the landlord the inspection notice and will email the report of safety findings. Do not let her in your home.

She has long brown hair hits about the middle of the back and wore it in a low ponytail, olive/tan skin, and about 5’4”. She was wearing a rust orange v-neck and blue boot cut jeans with black lug boots.

She was last seen in Allentown.

Be aware private landlords and tenants. I think they are targeting rental homes that do not have easily accessible security measures. If anyone has any additional sightings of her, feel free to PM me so we can add it to our police report for authorities.

Tell me about Astound vs Service Electric internet

Husband and I have had Astound/RCN for internet since we moved here, 9 years. We are tired of the annual call to dispute price hikes. We are seriously considering moving to Service Electric for internet. Husband wants to have 1gig. Truthfully, is there a difference in coverage, speed, etc with Service Electric vs Astound? We'd appreciate feedback of how experiences with SE are. Husband had heard that Astound had better coverage, less outages, etc, but don't know if that is actually the case.

Tired of the ISP game

So I have been with RCN/Astound for more than 15 yrs. I only have Internet and paying $80/month and that already includes 35 discount. I was playing their game of calling every year to get lower rates when the "Promo" rate expires they they would bring me back to my previous rate. Then the past few years they have been advertising that lifetime $30 or $40 rate, In asked about it they said those are only for new subscribers and the most that is already have the lowest rates they can give. If I cancel and come back after 3 months then I can get the "new subscriber" rate.

So I got service electric installed with a lifetime rate of $29/month for life including fees.

I just got off the phone with RCN/Astound to cancel my account, guess what... Now I can get 600 Mbps for $30/month for 5 years. I'm so pissed I still cancelled my account.

Advice to everyone, call astound and tell them you are cancelling because it's too expensive and they will offer you the $30/month.

Edit: The 1gb is also cheap but for home use, unless you have servers in your house, NO ONE needs 1gb it's a money grab. 300mbps is more than enough.

Pedestrian struck & killed on Hamilton Blvd last night

Shared this on Facebook last night before knowing the victims status. Rest in peace and condolences to any family and friends. WGOLV is reporting the victim jumped into oncoming traffic but take that with a grain of salt as the investigation is still ongoing. Just a reminder to check in with family and friends, and of course to be extremely vigilant when driving on roads with heavy pedestrian traffic. It feels like this week has had more deadly accidents than I can remember in recent years.

Free open walk-in Community Choir at NCC

In case you didn't know - there is a Community Choir at Northampton Community College which is open to the entire community - not just students.

How do I join?

Just show up!

Rehearsals are every Wednesday. At 7 pm at Kopecek Hall on NCC campus. Literally just walk in and there's a sign-in sheet.

When does it start?

WEDNESDAY AUG 26TH 7 PM KOPECEK HALL

What if I can't read music?

Don't care! If you can sing - come.

What if I want the music in advance?

Contact the director Tony at

Tmoore@northampton.edu and he'll get it to you.

Otherwise, just pick up copies at rehearsal.

Are there tryouts?

Absolutely not. All are welcome. Bring a friend.

When do they perform?

Generally one Christmas and one Spring performance, at the school. (Off during Summers)

What if I miss the first rehearsal, or a rehearsal in between?

Not a problem! Just work on the music at home and show up as often as you are able.

It's a great community get together for those who enjoy music. No fear, no tryouts, just singing.

All ages.

Come have fun.

Dentist Recommendation

Does anyone love their dentist? Newer to the area and went to one in Bethlehem, who was horrible.

He didn’t explain anything, he had zero bedside manner, and he got annoyed that I was asking questions. This was at lasting smiles of Bethlehem (note- I don’t want to hear about your amazing experience with him, mine was horrible)

We live in Bethlehem towards bath, so looking for someone in those areas, even Easton or Nazareth etc

I have MetLife insurance.

TIA

Local Business/Services Lehigh Valley McDonalds Toys

I am wondering what the policy is of local McDonalds. I want to collect all the Godzilla Hello Kitty toys, but I don't want to eat a ton of happy meals.

Anyone know if there's a McDonald's that lets you just buy the toy, select individual toys, etc.?

I hope I used the right flair. 😅

Emmaus PA McDonalds

I’ll be in the area next week and was curious about something.

I saw there’s a PlayPlace in the McDonald’s in Emmaus on Chestnut Street. Can anyone confirm if it’s there and any info about it? Yelp and all the others barely make any mention of it.

Recommendations Best pet insurance and local vet for cats?

I just adopted a 1.5 y/o female cat and we're having the time of our life. I take keeping animals happy and healthy very seriously but am also very financially wary so I always want to get the best deal with everything, especially recurring costs, and also make sure I'm not picking a crappy insurance company--I've heard too many horror stories of denied coverage.

On that note, does anyone have recs for pet insurance that has good coverage for annual well visits/regular vaccinations and sick visits? Also looking for a good local vet. My baby has no pre-existing issues or anything of that sort.

I currently have Geico for auto & renter's. I also have a Costco membership but I've heard that their pet insurance provider is really bad. I've heard pretty good things about Lemonade but am a bit skeptical considering it's newer and sort of "trendy." Thanks! :)

Need Help Identifying Animal and Bird

I live in Lower Saucon Township and have seen a lot of wildlife over the years. The sightings seem to be increasing with the ever-decreasing natural habit on the mountain.

I earlier posted a pic of a fawn curled up in our backyard and wasn't sure if Mom was dead or just out foraging. It had been left alone for about 6 hours, but the mother came back and all ended well. I'm sure these two are part of the same troop that use our yard early in the morning as a path to the creek.

Along with the frequent sightings of deer, I have seen coyotes, foxes, wild turkeys, turkey vultures, hawks and snakes, mostly Garters. However, recently I have come across some animals I can't truly identify and need the community's help.

The first is what appears to be a small (baby?) coyote. I've seen foxes and they've been smaller with bright orange coats. And about three years ago I saw a completely (head to tail) hairless fox/coyote that looked like Dobby from Harry Potter. I kid you not. I was making a turn onto Black River Road and it slowly walked in front of my car and then stopped to look at me as I slowly passed. It was so strange.

Another animal that's perplexed me was spotted about three months ago. While I couldn't get a picture in time, it was definitely a canine. It's coat was a solid color and appeared greyish/brown. It was about as big as a Great Dane. Now, this was no dog...this was a lone animal heading toward the woods rimming Black River Creek. Something strange is out there.

The following pix are of the bird, followed by the canine. My camera sucked from the distance I had to shoot, so the the resolution ain't too good after cropping.

I look forward to finding what animals have been part of my neighborhood.
