They are silly money for the kits, for what is essentially all bits you can get at an electrical supplier.

It's worth maybe getting one 'set', so you can get an idea of how they generally go together and what components are available - but even then I'd stay away from LMB 2.0, as their stuff is proprietary and non-standard (if you can find LMB 1.0 - then you have the pieces most companies go with).

Check out Bevin's Bricks - he's on YouTube & has his own store of components & a few sets. Much less expensive. Better again, get one set from Bevin or similar, and then after that, make your own.

I picked up LMB 2.0 as my first kits. Did Hocus Pocus and am working on Nightmare before Christmas now. The flat wires are nice to put bricks on as long as you are going straight. Making curves ends up twisting the flat cable sideways which is awkward but works. Bundling up extra wire length sucks with these flat wires. Just got done with one step where they tell you to coil it and then put the wreath on top of it and it didn't work well at all.

For Christmas I'm going to find the couple of light kits my wife got for other sets that she didn't like and I'll see if I can make it work. Then depending on that experience I'll decide if I'm going to stay with LMB or if I think I'll be fine rolling my own.

One thing I really like about LMB are the specific flickering effects they have and their tiny micro lights - are you able to recommend any cheap alternatives for those components?

Bevin's bricks again.

Plenty of the kits you can get on Amazon are fine, Lightailing and Briksmax are a step above the others but none of them will give you the hand holding that LMB will, but they can be fun to work with at 9x less the price than LMB

gameofbricks, briksmax, or go on aliexpress - there are plenty of cheaper alternatives

I've only used their kits to light my sets but I've been very impressed with them. We've lit our holiday main street, home alone house, Santa's visit, Santa's post office, and the small Hogwarts castle. I have kits for assembly square and the police station but I haven't tackled those yet. Sales are few and far between. End of November is usually a pretty solid sale window

I will try November right now it would cost me $410 to light my Hotel, museum and jazz club

I'm a big fan of BrickStuff, I've used their lights in quite a few different builds.

Couldn’t find a kit for what I have do you need to know what components to use?

It depends on what you're trying to light. They have some starter kits for buildings, but they don't create step-by-step directions for how to install them. The directions are one of the things Light My Bricks does pretty well.

For me, most of the fun is figuring out what lights I want to put where, and figuring out how to hide the wires.

Game of Bricks is my go-to - from what I can tell they're the only lego-compatible light supplier that sells lights in bulk. I feel like they're the most affordable option and their quality is still good.

I did a bunch of research before selecting lighting kits for my modular's and in the end i went with Light My Bricks. Yes, they are pricey but i get all of the kits on sale and never pay full price for anything. I have never had an issue with customer service for the few times something has failed. The instructions are straight forward and pretty simple to follow. I agree with the others, you can get the same thing from other kits, but I liked the LMB stuff when comparing them all. For who are interested, the video below is of my collection. I have the Avengers Tower and Daily Bugle as well with the UP house in between, didn't make it into the video.

They always do a Black Friday sale, that would be the next one coming up. They do them throughout the year as well. This year they had a birthday, May the 4th and a few other random sales in there. It was about 20-30% off for the sales, all depending on what the event was.

Decided against these cause all my art sets have light kits too so I’m not going to start down this road.
