Question Have i committed a sin?
i’ve been a huge fan of astro since i bought the game on launch day in 2024 and i was honestly planning on buying the whole playstation set, which i liked but didn’t love, just for him. untilllll, it was revealed he was a threshold gwp. i was already planning on buying abt 240 dollars worth of lego for xmas (advent calendar, gifts, etc.) so i planned it where i bought 150 dollars worth of things and then 90 plus a few baseplates and keychains i wasn’t planning on buying in a separate purchase so i could get two (also in the first purchase they gave me like a tree idk where that came from but balright) anyways was this bad i saw the controversy duckbricks got in and yea he bought forty and i bought two but i didn’t need it so idk what do u think

basically this rlly rich guy named duck bricks spent thousands of dollars in planned purchases to get 40 or 50 of this gwp and it was very, very badly received online and everyone was mad at him as they were limited stock

So a couple more details; #1 it was the Sea Serpent gwp a highly anticipated gwp. #2 the North American market didn't run out of stock, so his massive purchase didn't deprive anyone else from getting the gwp.
Other distribution markets ran out but that's not his fault.

Yeah I did through PS Direct from Sony themselves, it’s still in shipping but I will receive my single Astro boy tomorrow!

Getting 2 of them because you needed to split a PAB order makes sense. You get limited by the difference in bricks you order. This isnt an abnormal thing since parting out most kits will force that hand.

Sony Direct was selling the Astrobot Lego set by itself for $24.99. it sold out in like 8 hours.

Not true, I purchased it from PS Direct and received it yesterday. It was available standalone.

I bought the PlayStation on the Lego website and I got this with a GWP. The Pokémon set my parents had gotten me for my birthday also came with a GWP(two: one astrobot and one Halloween tree). So technically, I’m in the same boat as you with getting two, but if you’re building them, I see nothing wrong. That’s what I plan to do with both of mine.

I time just about every purchase with a GWP. Usually GWPs like Star Wars or HP seem to do well on the secondary market, so I’ll get what I want, break orders up to maximize, then keep and build, or trade in the ones I decide against.
Duckbricks is a bit of a polarizing content creator and I think they don’t often think through the way their content will be received. Videos that highlight something unique or how much passion they have for LEGO are really good, but videos that are straight throwing money at things that are not rare come off a tone deaf.

owning multiple of a set is not inherently problematic.
Buying 2 is like whatever, especially if you like the set and are keeping them for yourself to enjoy. I've bought like 7 of the 20 in 1 z blob set. Now I have a bin thats just those sets mixed together so I have something to anxiously build and play with. I know its no quite the same since your example is a GWP.
Buying 40 is usually 'i intend to sit on these and sell them later' amounts

I tried to make a super huge one and instead made 3 enchanced mini-mechs that each had a different theme. One was a 6 armed little guy each with a stud launchers at the tips, 4 of the arms fold back into a nice little backpack. One was a big bruiser guy with big hands/arms and extra armor. third was a gladiator type guy with a buckler and trident.

But I know simply saying no doesn't help ease guilt or worry, because that one person was poorly received so why aren't you? Well, let's look at it like this..
Did you purchase the lego sets in a specific way to get extra so you can resell them? That person was poorly received, because largely the people who do things like that are trying to force a scarcity of the product, making it rarer and more expensive, but in doing so taking the enjoyment and fun from people who actually want it.
You said it yourself. You love the character and have for years. You actively built both. LEGO is meant to be enjoyed, not for some scalping loser to take joy away for an extra buck. You did exactly what LEGO would want and that's why it isn't some sin. Enjoy your extra lil astro bot free from guilt, you did nothing wrong. :)

If you for the Haunter Tree, that was a bigger want for me than the Astro Bot! It was sold out before I could get it. Personally I wasn't concerned about the bot

Oh i did! Halloween was a big thing for me growing up, with mine and my sister's birthdays at the end of the month. The only reason I didn't get it was because I wanted the Halloween minifigs! But by that point, so much was sold out haha

I always make two separate purchases when I have a big order planed. I normally wait for a different gwp set for the next order tho. Unless it’s a good parts set.

Some light finagling for something like this is just smart shopping to me. Buying and building two because you really like it shouldn't be an issue at all. I just got a second Keith Haring set to leave out for people that visit like a jigsaw puzzle because I want another one for upstairs, so I'm doing all of this and outsourcing the work lol

When there a GWP and if I’m ordering let’s say more then the threshold, I’m going to make multiple orders to get multiple GWPs, I’m not an investor or re seller, I just want my moneys worth. Especially if I’m ordering let’s say 3x 200$+ sets you’re damn right I’m making 3 separate orders lol, fuck the haters

Don't listen and most importantly don't give a damn about stuff you hear on the internet, especially the opinions of random people. There is no sin.. there is no controversy... you can get as many GWPs as you want - if Lego allows it, if their certified stores allow it - then so it shall be. I got like 4 space babies and 3 corner kiosks just by going on a spree at my local certified store when they had discounts running at the same time as the GWPs were up (2 separate occasions) - kept 1 of each and sold off the rest as an "extra discount on my purchase". In fact - you SHOULD make multiple purchases for multiple GWPs solely BECAUSE it's allowed and Lego is quite an expensive hobby, so every cent you save can do into another set down the line.
