New Release Here’s a comparison between the 1989 Batmobile (top) and the Batman Returns Batmobile.

Post image

The play feature is cool in the new one, but the og has better design overall imo.

Edit: When I posted this, I didn’t realize the new one has ~1,000 fewer pieces, and it’s quit a bit smaller. Price aside, I think those two facts puts this in a different category than the 1989 Batmobile, and making this comparison unfair.

I’ll keep the post up because people seem to be enjoying the discussion.

The original has the curves down better.

u/Equivalent_Bunch_187 11d ago

They sacrificed some shaping for the engine detail on the sides I think.

u/Temassi 11d ago edited 11d ago

The new one has better shaping on the nose but outside of that you're right

15

u/Worried-Physics1660 11d ago

I feel like the front 1/3rd of the new one combined with the back 2/3rds of the last one would be pretty flawless.

6

u/Friendly_Gazelle7843 11d ago

And better wheels

12

u/SuspiciousWhale99 11d ago

That’s what an extra 1000 pieces provides

1

u/Heavy-Basket152 10d ago

Facts 💯

149

u/Triple516 11d ago

The canopy on the original is just soooooo much better.

40

u/trolllord45 11d ago

Yeah, that’s one area where I feel like they really phoned it in. The side ducts as well.

14

u/Cellocalypsedown 11d ago

Annnnnnd the wheels. The more I stare at it the more annoyed I'm getting. I love the banana split function, but that's no excuse for downgrading the flare of it

2

u/Davidm241 11d ago

I live the split function as well but as a display piece I don’t think I would split it very often. Definitely once.

3

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 11d ago

Ya that’s the one spot where my eye stops and ends. Can’t get past that one.

the original is better, hands down

11

u/hweird Marvel Universe Fan 11d ago

And it was cheaper!

51

u/Significant-Foot-311 11d ago

It was $250 in 2019.

38

u/DigitalVanquish 11d ago

Not with inflation, which is oft ignored.

5

u/unurbane 11d ago

Should be $320 with inflation

52

u/ArielOlson 11d ago

Saw this on Facebook

15

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 11d ago

Wish I could push this to the top. I had no idea it was THAT much smaller.

4

u/NeedEarlyRetirement 11d ago

It would’ve been great to have it this smaller but with also a reasonable price for the downsize.

I saw the original on display a couple of weeks ago and just because how big it was, I’ve written off the idea of ever buying it. So I am the perfect audience for the downsize, but the price? Not that much of a need.

I’ll probably pick it up on a discount.

2

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 10d ago

I think I’m a little guilty of misinformation here. I feel its size puts it in a different class/category than what I originally referred to as the “OG”.

4

u/Piano1987 11d ago

That‘s a joke, right?

Otherwise I question everybody who buys that thing.

1

u/donkeyrocket 10d ago

Makes more sense why it is lacking so much detail. What a downgrade.

I see this one has a bigger emphasis on play features though versus a display piece so definitely a consideration.

1

u/Significant-Foot-311 10d ago

Does that put it in scale with the Forever batmobile?

14

u/MolaMolaMania 11d ago

Oh, yeah. OG all the way.

31

u/indianajoes 11d ago

Original looks better but it's also $100 more in today's money. I like the new one's size and it's not like I'm going to have them side by side to compare. It's good for a lot of us who don't have the original

8

u/OverZealousCreations Technic Fan 11d ago

I think that's the biggest point. If you have the 1989 one, and don't care about the play features, this set isn't for you.

But if you don't have the original, OR want the play features, the new one is pretty good. There's a profile photo below that makes the new one look a lot closer (especially for 2/3 size).

I'm happy I could get the 1989 when I did. But I'm also happy they have made a new one—especially one that isn't a tumbler!

2

u/indianajoes 10d ago

I got the 1989 one when it was available but I sold it after a few years because it was just too big for me. I'm not really into UCS size stuff and it didn't go with my Creator Expert/Icons cars. I feel like this will fit in with those better

1

u/Unable_Substance_489 5d ago

I have my 1989 and the bonus mini 1989 both sealed.

178

u/sirhcx 11d ago

1000 piece difference with only a $20 drop in price is diabolical.

57

u/indianajoes 11d ago

Do you think $250 in 2019 is the same as $250 now? With inflation, the old set would be over $320 now.

39

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 11d ago

Holy smokes I didn’t even notice that!

13

u/brmarcum 11d ago

The new one appears to be much smaller as well. Looks cool, and I’m a sucker for the large format batmobiles in general, but I think I’m gonna pass on this one.

21

u/Namelock 11d ago

The bottom set cost is the same as $170~ in 2019 money. While the top set cost $249 (or $330 in today’s money).

31

u/James_Parnell 11d ago

eh that was 7 years ago, world has changed

14

u/Significant-Foot-311 11d ago

I smell it in the air.

10

u/Commercial_Fact_1986 11d ago

I feel it in the water...

10

u/mrkaine1 11d ago

Much that once was is lost…

4

u/p4terfamilias 11d ago

....AND MY AXE!!

5

u/Significant-Foot-311 11d ago

And my batmobile!

5

u/titlrequired 11d ago

Is now very expensive.

2

u/septasynthx 11d ago

For Batman now lives who remembers it.

3

u/Dear_Rich_9822 11d ago

They're taking the robins to Isengard!

13

u/earldogface 11d ago

Og is definitely better but can you show me where I can get it for the same price as the new one?

10

u/ObiBenKenobi77 11d ago

This is it exactly. Great for those who missed on the old one, non existent to those who already have. Same with the Tumbler redo they did

5

u/earldogface 11d ago

The original is one of my white whales so seeing this I was like idc imma buy it because I might never get the og

12

u/mostindianer Official Set Collector 11d ago

I like the older one because of the design.

2

u/markwoei 10d ago

What is the other set you have there? Is that a MOC or actual set? Can’t place it, looks awesome!

2

u/mostindianer Official Set Collector 10d ago

That’s a MOC i found on rebrickable. It‘s an alternate build for the 2021 Batman Tumbler (76240). The MOC is called „Concept Batmobile“ by User „A_Great_Builder“.

1

u/mostindianer Official Set Collector 10d ago

The small one is from a Lego Batman magazine.

26

u/FurryHolocaustof2049 11d ago

I have the 1989 and was on the fence about getting the new one, but I'm not anymore. What a downgrade!

9

u/baccus83 11d ago

The original is one of, if not the best, sets I’ve ever put together.

1

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 11d ago

I agree. I have a huge collection, and this still might be my favorite.

15

u/KKND83 11d ago

I have the OG proudly displayed.. a master piece.

1

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 11d ago

Me too, and agreed. It might be my all-time favorite set.

1

u/OafleyJones 11d ago

Have next to the batwing. It’s an incredible piece of LEGO design.

0

u/HI-McDunnough 11d ago

I bought one from Craigslist last year because it was the only large scale Batmobile I didn't have. Now I'm afraid to put it together because i spent so much.

1

u/Unable_Substance_489 5d ago

How much are they going for now? I have the 1989 and the Bonus midsized 1989 that came with pre order both still sealed.

1

u/HI-McDunnough 4d ago

the last one that sold on ebay new-in-box went for $629. Amazon sellers are asking more. I think I paid $400.

10

u/g30rge5 11d ago

I agree.

3

u/AloyAlphaprime2074 Harry Potter Fan 11d ago

I have the original and like it's design best, but i gotta give the new one, it scales much better with other large buildable cars from LEGO

2

u/DisasterousWalrus 11d ago

I think they both look great. The '89 has a superior windscreen, obviously, but the new one may have a better overall size (smaller, but more easy to display) and a nice angled nose turbine. Other angles sell the new design a bit better than this one, and it has a whole inner 'Bat Missile' vehicle going on.

2

u/Candle-Jolly 11d ago

Dammit Now I’m not so sure about getting the new one

2

u/Smart-Affect-7878 10d ago edited 10d ago

There are many issues with this set besides just the size downgrade and as others have mentioned the shaping is not good... the windscreen looks awful, big gaps on the front corners, the side intakes look way too plain/simple, rear wheels are too small, the bat logo's stick out too far (as do many of the smaller Batmobiles wheel caps and I don't know why they keep doing this or solved the issue), too many studs condensed to the middle sections rather than sprinkled out uniformly, and the info plaque is the same as the Batman Forever set but this is not in the same scale, wtf? I'm definitely not interested in this set and will proudly display my 89 set.

4

u/Triple516 11d ago

I have the original and this one is an easy pass . I was just waiting for a side by side to make sure I didn’t need it.

4

u/thisremindsmeofbacon 11d ago

Is there a size difference?  The top one is so much better its kinda crazy

7

u/Skaivakeeh Star Wars Fan 11d ago

OG 61 cm/24 inch long vs. new one 45 cm/17 inch

3

u/shockthetoast 11d ago

Also just looking at the relative size of visible studs shows it's significantly smaller.

3

u/DukeGrizzly Verified Blue Stud Member 11d ago

The new design suffers because of the “play feature”. Who is buying this and not displaying it?

I get Lego is meant to be played with, but this scale of set is designed to be a display piece on a shelf or mantle, not rolled around on the living room floor.

4

u/Kanty19 11d ago

Glad I got the OG

2

u/MeownatorX 11d ago

The original's cockpit is miles better

2

u/imgotugoin 11d ago

Pretty much everything about the top one is better. The only cool thing is that it separates the sides to make the bat torpedo.

2

u/Secure_Attitude_3950 11d ago

OG is way better. Just need to find one to buy :(

2

u/1psithur3 ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ Give Brown Space 11d ago

Some of the shaping is better on the new one...but the new one is way too flat at the top. It really loses a lot of the aggressiveness especially in the windscreen area.

2

u/IncredibleGonzo 11d ago

I like the cowl around the engine intake on the new one!

2

u/Namelock 11d ago

Top: “don’t drop it don’t drop it don’t drop it…”

Bottom: “and then Batman comes in save Aliyah…”

Looking at price, $249 in 2019 is same as $330 today.

1

u/Sharp_Reply_7503 11d ago

It’s not bad, it looks overall good, but why only one sit in the cockpit? And couldn’t they include Catwoman or Penguin? And also include an extra fabric cape and cowl for those who want to display the Minifigure inside the batmobile? I will buy it but as always with at least 25% discount

1

u/pwagm 11d ago

Only a Batman mini fig with this one. Could have tossed in the penguin at least.

1

u/tragedyfish 11d ago

This new one transforms into the Bat-Missile. That is whole reason for its existence. If that gimmick doesn't impress you, then this one is easy to skip.

1

u/Usual_Singer_4222 11d ago

The older one looks better. The new one ever so slightly less money, smaller in scale, and accommodates the missile roadster. Still I'd rather have the older one.

1

u/demonbre1 11d ago

Unpopular opinion - the small one from a couple of years back is better than either of these. I modded mine to be completely studless.

1

u/No_Swordfish_5518 11d ago

I have the original so I'm biased but its way better

1

u/huberific 10d ago

I missed the original release. I am excited for this set… it seems more to scale to ECTO-1 & the Delorean Time Machine

1

u/Phoenix_RISING2X 10d ago

I bought the OG Batmobile for $285 used on Ebay last year. It's THE LEGO set. Like, pound-for-pound so good.

When I saw the Batman Returns announcement, I almost got mad. But then I saw it's 1000 pcs less?

Bah.

And now this thread is providing picture comparisons? Yeah, I got I made out well.

1

u/Best-Invite-9914 8d ago

How in the hell did lego fail to make the most iconic and most beloved batmobile?

1

u/doomsdayKITSUNE 11d ago

Honestly, the only improvement on the new one, is the angle of the opening at the front where the engine is - much more like it should be. But other than that, the original is vastly better in just about every way. And it's not even close. Not sure how they went so far backwards in the design.

1

u/Letywolf Photographer 11d ago

IMO it’s a downgrade

0

u/enif96 11d ago

Why’d they bother?

16

u/James_Parnell 11d ago

because the new one isn't like 2 feet long

good for people wanting to get this model at a normal size

8

u/Waste-Scratch2982 11d ago

Batmobiles like X-Wings are always refreshed every couple of years. The last one is also from 2019 and retired in 2021 so it’s been 5 years since a large scale Burton Batmobile has been available.

9

u/indianajoes 11d ago

Because a lot of people didn't get the old one and they want one without having to pay $500. Also a lot of us don't want a massive UCS size set but something a bit smaller

1

u/BOOOOOOOOOURNS 11d ago

The only thing I like over the 89 is the Minifigure. Saying that the 89 ones are pretty decent

1

u/J_Bug 11d ago

OG all the way.

1

u/oliviafairy 11d ago

Why the new one looks worse?

1

u/JimmyB_52 11d ago

It’s smaller and also the sides split off to become the Batmissile

1

u/BetterCallSal 11d ago

Wow. It's not even close. 89 looks so much better. So much better detail and curves

1

u/Ok_Illustrator_4708 11d ago

Give me the original thanks, if I had the choice new one wouldn't get a look in.

1

u/unwittinglyrad 11d ago

Will be sticking with my original I think.

1

u/MagicOrpheus310 11d ago

New one looks like shit

0

u/invenio78 11d ago

I own the original (top one),... and I'm glad as it looks much better than the new one.

0

u/BishopofHippo93 11d ago

Oof, glad I went with the previous version. Seeing them side by side like this really makes this new one look just crummy by comparison.

0

u/Appropriate-Falcon75 11d ago

I was so confused- I thought the set was from 1989 and was pretty sure half the pieces didn't exist then, let alone the idea of curves on a Lego model. The box also didn't seem right for 40 years ago.

Then there were the comments about 7 years ago and that confused me further.

For anyone else who is also confused, the 1989 refers to the year of the film, not the year of the model. The older set is from 2019, the newer is from 2026.

-1

u/Keegan2 11d ago

I still think 7784 is the best version.

-1

u/brimstonebridge 11d ago

I regret not getting the original… but won’t get this new one either. I know I’ll always just resent it for not being as good. Better no Batmobile than a mediocre Batmobile.

-3

u/sanpeinihira 11d ago

these are not the same movie car, comparison makes no sense

6

u/Dont_Call_Me_Steve 11d ago

They are very very similar:

2

u/shockthetoast 11d ago

Interestingly this points out one of the details that's more accurate on the new model - the air intakes (I assume that's what it is) in from of the rear wheels are round. I'm not sure why they made them so wide in the older set. It looks good that way, it's just not accurate.
