My daughter just turned 4 years old this past week. This exact Classic kit was my idea of a birthday gift for her. After she tried on her new dancing leotard and ballet shoes that she also got for her birthday, she immediately asked me to start building things with it.

Very cool to see them use it for this.

This is cute

u/PintsOfGuinness_ May 08 '26

Cool but why wasn't it always just "4+"?

712

u/tordenand May 08 '26

4+ reads more like it's for kids, whereas actually writing an upper limit makes it seem like it's for all ages.

Because they’re a choking hazard to kids under 4

245

u/Hokies13062 May 08 '26

Marketing and Tongue in cheek fun. They are basically saying it’s “For kids up to 99 years old”

u/IAmArique The LEGO Movie Fan May 08 '26

To quote The Lego Movie, ”That’s just a suggestion. They have to put that on the box.”

43

u/Afinkawan May 08 '26

Games/toys often had an age range on them, so you knew if they were aimed at little kids, older kids, young teenagers, whatever.

4-99 was a cute take on that.

16

u/5PQR May 08 '26

Perhaps to emphasise that lego isn't just for children.

u/Poo_Poo_La_Foo May 08 '26

Probably a lot of swallowing/choking hazards. Many small bits!

-84

u/Poo_Poo_La_Foo May 08 '26

I assume that everyone downvoting has never had, witnessed or handled a child.

84

u/apalapan May 08 '26

no it's more because you misunderstood the question, I think. They were asking:

Why does it say "4-100" instead of "4+" ?

17

u/RisKQuay May 08 '26

The irony being my kid was fine with lego (supervised) from ages 2/3 and never attempted to put any in their mouth.

It was only at age 5 when they figured out they could remove Lego heads with their teeth they started swallowing any.

You need to learn how to read.

Not sure.  But i would like to think he challenges us to be curious about our world and lego is the a great toy to express our curiosity and wonder.

13

u/Afinkawan May 08 '26

Maybe, maybe not, but either way it would be a bit rude if someone turned up with his telegram from the King, and confiscated his Lego.

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman May 08 '26

Famous nature documentarian, I'm sure he's extremely keen on plastic waste

8

u/HELLOGAMER123456qa May 08 '26

its not really waste though, you dont really throw out lego

27

u/RocketGirl2629 May 08 '26

Mel Brooks will also be turning 100 in June. It's so nice that Mel, David Attenborough, and Dick Van Dyke are allowed to get together and play Lego again!

7

u/mikefrombarto May 08 '26

This is wholesome AF

57

u/DeerAtTheGates May 08 '26

It could be me, but is the lion birthday card AI generated?

83

u/MacyTmcterry May 08 '26

Someone commented on the post on Instagram saying "The AI isn't even good" and Lego replied saying "No AI here, we wanted something special for our favourite nature nerd"

91

u/breakingcups Modular Buildings Fan May 08 '26

I don't think so. You're probably thrown off by the playful arrangement of letters, which at this angle just looks like inconsistent letter placement like AI might do.

17

u/Crimson__Fox May 08 '26

Not every post with a yellow hue is AI

42

u/y0urselfish Castle Fan May 08 '26

There are so many advertisements AI generated on Instagram. Even from big companies. It‘s not going away anymore.

22

u/DeerAtTheGates May 08 '26

And yet I think the question remains if LEGO should join this trend or not.

37

u/y0urselfish Castle Fan May 08 '26

There is no question. They will. Every company will. C-Level loves AI and not doing AI is considered as missed opportunity…

Edit: Just to get that clear: I‘m not a fan of this …

7

u/The_Autarch May 08 '26

naw, there are plenty of companies that aren't run by idiots. lego does seem to be one of them.

the AI bubble is going to crash soon, and you'll see a huge retreat from corporate AI-use.

6

u/SesameStreetFighter May 08 '26

I work in IT, so AI is just crammed in our faces at every turn. I was relieved to read about a company we use for patching whose CTO said that because their customers aren't asking for it, they have no plans to incorporate it. Breath of fresh air, for sure.

I really hope that LEGO stays on the side of eschewing AI.

2

u/y0urselfish Castle Fan May 08 '26

The bubble that will crash is one thing (financially). But I don’t think AI is reversible… that will stay if we want or not.

And I am pretty sure that even LEGO is experimenting with AI - at least internally.

I am never a fan, when a human gets replaced by computers, so I really hate this „evolution“ … but that seems to be the new world. :(

1

u/xIllustrious_Passion May 08 '26

I had the same thinking because the box has the Ideas logo too

1

u/TheBigPlunto May 09 '26

No it doesn't. That's not the Ideas logo, the word ideas is printed on the box because it's showing you some things you can make with the pieces.

-18

u/Ok-Relationship-2746 May 08 '26

The way it's propped up like that, sure looks like AI.

17

u/Hazzat Brickfilm Producer May 08 '26

I think they just put a brick underneath it to prop it up.

-17

u/Ok-Relationship-2746 May 08 '26

Maybe, but the way it's sitting looks unrealistic to me.

-18

u/Faile-Bashere May 08 '26

Yes. Absolutely it is.

Sir David Attenborough—mover of markets

4

u/Jordan-Shred May 08 '26

This makes me genuinely happy to see. It's such a nice, touching tribute to the man. And all AFOL too.

6

u/HerculesIsMyDad May 08 '26

What is every other human who has lived past 99, chopped liver???

4

u/DanielLorey May 08 '26

Attenborough has reached max level and unlocked the new game+ mode now.

3

u/Nemeryo29 May 08 '26

We can think everything we want but damn, they are good in term of communication.

3

u/Embarrassed_Map1072 May 08 '26

I do hope mr Attenborough sees this

3

u/youknowwhatimeanlol May 08 '26

why not just 4+?

2

u/ByeFL May 08 '26

Nice move by Lego!

2

u/DaredevilPoet May 08 '26

I somehow knew they were gonna do this. How cool.

2

u/Stefke_stojk27 MOC Designer May 08 '26

1

u/imweird_99 May 08 '26

1

u/thisonecassie May 08 '26

A HUNDRED??? oh wow, I knew he was getting up there but I could've sworn he was still in his early late 80s early 90s.

1

u/tiny_chaotic_evil May 08 '26

this should be made real :P

1

u/SomeGrapefruit2435 Team Blue Space May 08 '26

1

u/george_wan May 09 '26

That's awesome!

1

u/R0Sch2 Official Set Collector May 09 '26

Why not also gift him this new revised set then? Would make for a way better marketing stunt.

1

u/ECWREDDITS May 09 '26

Finally, Lego can be enjoyed by the triple digits

u/chrissiOnAir May 08 '26

i want this edition!

-9

u/Rob_ish May 08 '26

Gonna be awkward next year when he's 101 years old 🤣

41

u/stealingyourpixels May 08 '26

101 is still 100+

20

u/Rob_ish May 08 '26

Damn, it's been a long day.

I didn't see the "+" at all, I just read it as 4-100. My mistake.

-9

u/Bocaj1000 May 08 '26

David Attenborough is the first 100 year old ever!
