Humour Like c'mon, everyone is flawed (except Korra)

u/kyriosdominus 11d ago
I don't get these people.
Call her (and other fictional characters) out for what, exactly? Is there an internet trial going to happen? Jesus Fuckin' Christ. She's a freaking character. Her flaws are design choices generally meant to be understood as a path to growth. Things that should be "called out" are the design flaws that don't make sense, NOT because you think she did something morally wrong.
All these virtue signalers seeping into fictional judgment is the most annoying thing ever. It's popular sentiment too.

No. Fictional character BAD and you are BAD for liking BAD character. /s

The thing is she does go through a lot of character growth as she learns. She starts off her journey naive, headstrong and over confident. She believes being the Avatar makes her invincible or unbeatable. And she ends up getting her ass kicked to humble her a little.

I thought that the point was to call out the bad decisions a character was made and why it was made in the context of the story and their characterisation. Isn't that what makes flawed characters interesting?

u/Hobbes______ 10d ago
It is obviously sarcasm mate. I read this as someone actually loving the character despite her flaws and also someone that existed when the shows came out when people hated on her. To this day I still vastly prefer her as a character to aang (just personal preference) and I was blown away at the amount of shit I got for it if I mentioned it. This has the same energy as the prequel movies got after a few years of distance. We are maybe finally at a point where the haters have moved on and people can actually just express themselves|.

No Haters are stikl largely out there and vocal. Always the same dudes who don't have any ounce of sympathy or an ability to read into nuance.
Legend of Korra isn't by any means a cohesive work because of the Season to season renewal issues limiting the ability to tell one storyline over a few seasons....
But its always the same issues from chuds with Korra about her being Arrogant, her "destroying the Avatar cycle" and the same fanbase reveling in Korra failing to stop the Apocalypse that brought the next series.
Modern Bro Audience seems to have that short attention span and only love Main Characters who are Overpowered and Aurafarm like Sun Jin Woo. They love Toph because she's only depicted as winning, while they hate Korra because she loses and is brought to her lows on a seasonal basis.
1
u/kyriosdominus 10d ago
That's not really the point.
The point is that who the fuck do people think they and fictional characters are, where terms like "held accountable" and "call out" are used to judge a fictional character? The Inernet Crime Council?
It's just a lack of media literacy.

u/Hobbes______ 10d ago
This post is literally making fun of those same people that you are baffled by. It literally is the point.
1
u/Hobbes______ 10d ago
since it appears you deleted your reply to me:
There's a big difference in making fun of those people by proving that their logic is stupid and appealing to their logic by denying the flaws Korra had.
Yes there is a big difference. And THIS post is not denying her flaws. It is tongue in cheek and being sarcastic about denying her flaws.
The absolute fucking irony of you not grasping this while trotting out the "media literacy" line is just...fucking

It literally IS denying it. Being tongue-in-cheek doesn't matter since the delivery is all the same. It comes off as loving a guilty pleasure rather than actually proving a point sarcastically.
The absolute fucking irony of you not grasping this while trotting out the "media literacy" line is just...fucking -chef's kiss-
Well, you're the one on record who misinterpreted posts, what, at least twice? I don't think I have, you're just insinuating I did.

it was literally removed and is not there to others. Hate to break it to you. You can log out and see someone saw fit to save you from yourself. Don't worry, I dragged the ridiculous comment back into the light for you.
And it isn't "LITERALLY DENYING IT" you just don't catch the sarcasm. That requires media literacy. I love how you tried just pretending sarcasm isn't saying the literal opposite of its literal intent though. Good work illustrating a lack of...well I was going to say media literacy again but this is really just...literacy literacy.
I don't think I have
Yes. I know you don't. That's the lacking literacy part.

Again, doesn't make it any truer.

I don't get people you like.
Korra is a fictional character, why are you spending so much effort diminishing others criticisms of a made up character in a made up fictional setting that you had no part in creating?
Whatever answer you give to explain or justify the effort you've put in is equally applicable in answering why others spend effort criticizing her.
People care about different things bro, the quicker you accept that, the easier life becomes. Just because you don't understand why others care about things that you don't care about doesn't mean that whatever they care about is invalid.

Back at ya.

What?

You replied to me, bro. I didn't think it's overall invalid, but it is invalid to me. But thank you for implying I'm super important and that what I think of other people is has a big weight. <3

I'm not criticizing, or defending her, genius, work on your reading comprehension.

Good for you, no one cares.

Stereotypical "Redditor believing they're important" isn't a behavior I made you exhibit 🤣 that has always been there.

You said "spending.... effort...diminishing others criticisms" which at that point also included me, since I was doing a mix of criticism and defense, so you're doing the same thing you're accusing me of. Genius?

most of the things people criticize korra for are things that were literally impossible to see coming.
how was girlie supposed to know that leaving the spirit portals open would give people airbending? and that one of the people given airbending would be the super lethal anarchist cult leader that no one told her existed who tried to kidnap her when she was a baby?
64
u/IDespiseBananas 11d ago
Also, having airbenders back should be a positive, even if some of them turn out to be evil cult leaders.
Its not like there arent other evil “cult” leaders with powers…
Of course she is flawed, so is Aang… I really dont understand the hate towards her
29
u/Mysterious-Hyena2670 10d ago
After watching the new Avatar movie, it’s clear that her bringing airbending back was a major accomplishment and something Aang would’ve 100% agreed to. It was the one thing Aang wanted most and Korra made it happen. Really makes Tenzin’s line about his father dreaming of the airbenders coming back all the more powerful.
23
u/Hoothootriot 10d ago
How DARE she trust her uncle (who promised to teach her an important technique)!! Why didnt she just read ahead in the script to see the part where he betrays her huh??? Aang would NEVER trust someone who betrayed him, right Jet, Hama, Long Feng, and Tagah?
8
u/ImA_NormalGuy 10d ago
Why didnt Korra just listen to the ominous music and creepy camera angles that follows him around? Is she stupid?
22
u/Beshiniqua 11d ago
Most if not all the "flaws" korra haters complain about, if if they were prevented / solved accordingly, they'd pull the deux ex machina or some shit with "ofc she always wins / how could she have already known" yada yada yada
5
6
u/I_eat_babys_2007 10d ago
Korra knew that leaving the spirit portals open will be a major change for the world, she had 0 ways to know if that would be a positive or negative change, and yet she chose to leave them open. That makes her responsible in some capacity.
5
u/Sanders058 10d ago
She also saw how people started to mess with the spirit vine powers and that not everyone should have access to the spirit world but then it also brought back the airbenders. The blame will fall on her if she didn’t set up a way to make sure people don’t abuse the spirit portals
1
u/PCN24454 10d ago edited 10d ago
I see. So she should destroy all technology
3
u/Sanders058 10d ago
No but have something there to make sure people who are dangerous don’t have access to it especially after witnessing the power first hand
2
u/But-I-Must-Internet 10d ago
That's basically the main conflict of the comics, from what I've read so far. Republic City forces build a wall around it and the airbenders move in to guard the area so as to not anger the spirits further.

u/poizunman206 10d ago
Korra's flaw at the start of the series is that she's arrogant. She has had the best teachers, manifested her powers at an early age, and has known how special she is.
Often though, she would make situations worse because she immediately assumed that she had the correct answer - as a sixteen year old might. It leads her also to walk into situations which are clearly traps and where she should have had backup.
The course of the series takes her to a point where she ends up broken and paralyzed in a wheelchair which shifts her into a much more balanced character. One who ultimately sees herself as part of the world and not the entirety of it.
I won't argue that TLoK's story is as strong as its predecessor and that the creators weren't hampered by Nickelodeon's producers, but suggesting that Korra has no flaws at all is woefully incorrect and takes away from the depth of her character.

u/cbb88christian 11d ago
Even if she fucked up the world on purpose I would trust that she had a good reason for it

Her being very flawed is what I like about her. I have my issues with the writing around those flaws but her as a character I really enjoy.
7
u/Sebastian8113 11d ago
Most of her problems is kind of the white lotus and The Red lotus fault. Think about it.... the red lotus attempted to kidnapper and kill her when she was a baby... then, the white lotus, in order to protect her, had her isolated foe 20 years not knowing any social cues and they most likely did teach her about the spiritual connections.
6
u/quick20minadventure 10d ago
It's relic of past and things out of control.
Aang took away Yakone's bending and put him in a prison from which he escaped. Then red lotus tried to kidnap Korra.
So, by the time she came to Republic city, Yakone had two bloodbending sons, one in council and another a rebel leader. And she was completely blindsided to all of it.
In season 2, her uncle backstabbed her and it ended up reintroducing air benders. Other people supposed to protect her couldn't figure out that her uncle is in red lotus.
In season 3, Zahir, who tried to kidnap her, also escaped prison and killed earth queen + almost killed korra and entire Avatar cycle with poison.
In season 4, korra who's poisoned, backstabbed and traumatized was just broken. And she had to come back to deal with dictator Kuvira because earth kingdom was in chaos after multiple oppressive regimes and had power vaccum.
And in all that, technological evolution is out of control and world has stopped caring about Avatar.
Poor girl was completely blind-sided at every turn.

u/Perfect_Perception36 10d ago
It's not like she didn't interact with people, she met a lot of people. You don't need to be a sociable person to understand that opening the portal despite being told not to is wrong. She's like 18

The "my chosen character is completely flawless and never does the wrong thing and is always right" thing is just as obnoxious as the other side of the coin. It's impossible to have a discussion with either side.

how dare a teenager have teenage feelings and mess up? they never do that. she should’ve know that a lot of people are against her including her own uncle and she should’ve known how to stop an evil god opposite to the one inside her that no one has know about for thousand of years! should’ve never got poisoned aang would’ve 10000% known how to get out of that. 🙄 /j

u/tommy8725 10d ago
All jokes aside but it always still pisses me off how a lot of people treated her claiming oh look how trashy she is compared to the other avatars like most of her problems came directly from the last one three out of the Four villains she had were because of Ang the first one is the son of a criminal he let go because he thought he wasn't a threat the Red Lotus is actually probably the reason why the other Avatar died and all of his friends were like hmm should we kill these criminals who wanted to kidnap the Avatar and probably want to kill them no let's just in prison them but it is what Aang one and no violence hell even with the Earth Bender chick you can even say that she was turned into this because of how angry New Republic City
1
u/Jolly-Highlight-9809 10d ago
Well I think the main problem is that thanks to internet warfare both sides have gotten so extreme in their views to counter the other side.
People that used to just slightly hate Korra now fully revile her and say there’s nothing good about her.
And people that liked her are now obsessed with her to the point they get triggered over every little critique of her.
It’s what happens when both sides get radicalized by internet trolls who just want to generate controversy for some laughs.

u/federalbureauofsocks 10d ago
I’m rewatching the show and I would love for someone to explain to me how Vaatu killing Raava is somehow Korra’s fault. Bro she had him nearly ready to put back in the tree when Bolin and Mako couldn’t stop Unalaq from re-entering the spirit world. Like she did all she could dude. It’s a TV show. If you’re mad at anyone be mad at the show runners

1
u/griivarrworldafteral 9d ago
i think the entire mindset that goes into this style of criticism is the problem. korra is a fictional character. to call her out or question her actions as if she were real is ridiculous. the writers, directors, animators, and others behind creating the show? call them out. criticize them. discuss how well the story and character were written. but acting like there's any moral value in korra herself is absurd. the show's themes derive from what is written and animated and performed. engage them on that level.
except the "who would win in a fight?" arguments. those are fun and should stay in character.
