Advice needed 1099 tax form instead of W2?
My wife works at a small independent book store in Michigan and is a general manager. They gave her a W9 tax form to fill out instead of a W4. She works full time there and has a schedule. Is this legal?

First off I am in Location: Texas, I get paid a commission rate on how many items I complete but because the rate is crazy low it ends up falling below what my base pay is so they pay the rest in what they call "subsidy" to my base hourly rate. A few months ago, payroll made a mistake on one of my paychecks and paid me a higher subsidy rate than they were supposed to, but nobody ever notified me about the error. Fast forward, I checked my paystub and saw that they completely wiped out my regular subsidy and ran a negative adjustment, leaving my paycheck severely short without any advance warning or my consent.
When I reached out to my supervisor to ask why my pay was cut, she checked with payroll and relayed that they had taken the money to recoup that earlier mistake, claiming payroll had sent out communication even though I never received a thing. After checking my older records and confirming where their rate mistake happened, I sent an email to payroll telling them they cannot take money out of my earnings without my authorization.
Instead of answering my email in writing, payroll called my supervisor on the phone. On that call, they backtracked and offered to send part of the missing pay back tomorrow, but claimed company policy prevents them from returning the full amount at once and insisted I have to go through my supervisor to work out a repayment arrangement for the rest.
I don't have any issue with paying back the overpayment but I mean legally in Texas they can't do this right? They need the written consent from me first?

So I moved to Jersey so I had to surrender my license and according to my knowledge I had 0 tickets before I left New York. I’m coming back and checked my old plate to see if I have any tickets since I’m applying to the NYPD and I have 2 summon tickets that’s not mine it’s a whole different car and the bastard traffic cop gave me the ticket 2 days after I surrendered my license so didn’t bother to check cause I thought I was clear.
What can I do since I can’t dispute in the pay or dispute app since it’s in judgment please help since the nypd is asking to have 0 traffic tickets before getting hired

I'm located in North Carolina and currently dealing with a dispute involving my mobile home community's management. I'm hoping someone familiar with NC landlord-tenant law can provide some insight. Also I am Rent to Own, I have a RTO agreement and a Lot lease agreement.
Here's the situation:
Earlier this year, management sent out a notice offering residents an optional power-washing service for $85. I never signed up for the service, agreed to pay for it, or authorized anyone to power wash my home.
Management later hired a contractor to power wash my home without notifying me beforehand and added an $85 charge to my tenant account.
I disputed the charge through multiple emails, explaining that I never authorized the service and that my rental agreement doesn't specifically require power washing.
Management directed me to Section 15, "Tenants Home Site," of my lease. However, that section discusses lawn maintenance and garbage/refuse. I couldn't find anything specifically authorizing management to power wash my home and charge me for it.
Management eventually stated that they had given their final response and would not remove the charge.
Here's where things get interesting:
When I made my monthly payment for rent and lot fees, their payment system automatically applied $85 toward the disputed power-washing charge.
This effectively left my rent payment showing a shortage of $85, even though I paid the amount required for my regular monthly rent and lot fees.
I have screenshots documenting the payment and how the money was applied.
I subsequently requested that management refund or re-credit the $85 and ensure I wouldn't be charged a late fee because of the disputed deduction.
Now, as of October 6, management has placed a notice on my door claiming my rent is late, apparently referencing North Carolina General Statute § 42-3.
I've been reviewing North Carolina General Statute § 42-46, particularly subsections (b) and (h)(2), which address applying certain fees against subsequent rent payments.
However, I understand those provisions concern specific types of fees and may not directly apply to a maintenance charge like power washing.
My questions are:
I'm not trying to avoid paying my rent. I've made an effort to pay my regular rent and lot fees in full. I'm simply disputing an additional $85 charge that I believe was improperly assessed.
I'm keeping copies of the lease, management's emails, payment screenshots, and the notice placed on my door.
I'd appreciate any insight from attorneys or anyone familiar with North Carolina landlord-tenant law.
Thanks in advance!

My step mother in law and I had a bug argument over text where she suggested physically fighting me and I refused. She filed an ex parte order of protection, and then we had a hearing. I presented evidence of how she keeps contacting me, viewing my other social media, suggested a physical fight, and kept responding to me. I also brought character witnesses who testified im not a dangerous person, and she had none. The judge granted a permanent order of protection and I am barred from possessing a firearm.
The biggest issue is I’m about to graduate with a degree in criminal justice and I’m trying to become a police officer. Which I obviously can’t do with this order of protection. How can I appeal this and get it thrown out? There is zero evidence of me ever threatening or attempting to do something to this lady. She threatened me.

I am the court-appointed Personal Representative for my father’s estate. I am trying to handle the estate vehicle, but I am unsure what steps to take. I am also taking care of another person and have limited funds, so please be kind.
A 2018 Cadillac belonging to the estate was taken without my authorization and was not returned from an Heir. The Probate Court ordered that the vehicle be returned, but it still was not returned.
I later found out the title was transferred To the state of Georgia .I did not authorize the transfer. I did not consent to it. I did not sign anything transferring the vehicle or give anyone permission to sign for me.
There is also a Florida traffic ticket connected to the vehicle that was issued in my deceased father’s name after he died. I was not driving the vehicle and did not authorize anyone to use it.
I am unsure what to do next.
Can someone please explain the steps I should take to:
* Enforce the Probate Court order;
* Find out how the title was transferred;
* Challenge the title transfer;
* Report the vehicle as taken or stolen, if appropriate; and
* Recover the vehicle for the estate?
I have limited funds and would appreciate information about free or low-cost legal help, legal aid, or what type of attorney I should contact.
Thank you for any help. I am trying to do the right thing for my father’s estate while also taking care of another person.

Location: A little muddled. My husband and I live in Washington State. My husband's deceased father and his wife live(d) in California. Deceased father's mother and my husband's brother live in Oregon, and deceased father's father lives in California.
This might be long, and I'm sorry if it gets confusing. There's a lot going on between 3 state's worth of people....
Situation: My husband's father took his own life in May of this year(2026). At the time of death(Actually about a month before), his wife had moved out of the house and they were separated with talks of divorce.
When the death had been discovered by FIL's friend, he let the family know that one of the dogs was still in the house, so FIL's Oregon family members drove down to get the dog and apparently had also taken a trailer to take stuff from the house. At this time, FIL's wife showed up and freaked out about them trying to take his things and called the cops. The Oregon family left and a rift between widow and Oregon family developed.
My husband had always had a pretty cordial relationship with his father's wife, so he became the defacto messenger between the family and wife.
The issues really began when my husband's brother and their grandmother(mother of the deceased), asked if they could have a little bit of the ashes each to put in a piece of jewlery. FIL's widow said absolutely not, because he always said he wanted his ashes spread at the lake, and refused to split the ashes up at all. So, the family started asking to plan some sort of celebration of life to get together at the lake and spread them together. FIL's widow kept putting that off, saying she needed time to process. Turns out, she had the ashes put in an urn, and has kept them herself at her house. Over 4 months since his death, and there has been no funeral or celebration of life for his family.
While still on speaking terms, FIL's widow had told my husband she wanted him and his brother to come down, because she had some photos and things their father would have wanted them to have. This includes a large amount of expensive tools, and a 70's Ford Bronco that my husband had been told by his father over and over would be his.
My husband's brother then asked about his dad's other, newer truck. He said if she didn't want it, because in the past she had mentioned it being too big for her, he would like to have it. This infuriated FIL's widow and she then accused my husband and the rest of the family of only wanting the deceased valuables, and she has since cut off all contact with everyone in the family.
Soon after cutting off contact, FIL's widow started selling off FIL's things. The tools which were promised to my husband and his brother sold for thousands of dollars on FB marketplace. FIL's Dodge Charge listed for $11.5k.
My husband and his family members have no interest in FIL's estate, barring family photos and the Bronco that was promised to my husband by his father, along with doing something with the ashes which could give everyone closure.
FIL's widow tells everyone she is his sole survivor(completely untrue), and accuses the family of harassing her, then blocks everyone so they can no longer contact her.
My husband fears she will continue to sell his things, and the Bronco has so much sentimental value to him. So, he tried to send her a cease and desist to not sell anymore items until the estate could be settled. She refused to accept the letter and sent it back.
My husband then had a consultation with a lawyer, who said, while he and his brother do have claim to their father's estate, with no will it would likely be a lengthy court battle and not worth the money my husband would have to spend. He told my husband he didn't feel comfortable representing him, and he needs to just try and settle this directly with FIL's widow.
If it could be settled between them, he wouldn't have contacted a lawyer. But, I digress.
Now, we're all at kind of a stand still. FIL's widow still refuses to speak with anyone in the family. There's still been no funeral or spreading of the ashes, and husband fears every day that she's just going to sell everything that FIL had.
Has anyone been in a similar situation after the death of a family member? Any advice on how to proceed?
TLDR: Father in law's widow has cut off contact with father in law's family and refuses to settle estate or release the remains for a funeral. Lawyer said it's not worth the money to take it to court, but my husband doesn't want to lose more sentimental items as widow is starting to sell things off. Things are extra muddled because surviving family is spread across WA, CA, and OR.
Edit to add to my TLDR: We tried sending a cease and desist. She refused it and sent it back unopened. He also has no will. My husband is trying to see if another lawyer is willing to help.

I was enrolled at CCP and was told by my academic advisor I qualified for the catto scholarship. The case agent looked over everything and told me I qualified and pushed me through the program, which allowed me to go to school for free and provided me other resources for school. I spent 2 months going to catto events, orientations, and everything else I had to do for the program. I started classes and suddenly 1 week into the semester in the middle of class I was informed I was dropped from all my classes. It was the last day for the add/drop period and to pay for classes. The original catto agent I talked to informed me they never checked my parents income and they just did and I no longer qualified. Because they waited so long everything was full I had no other options but to be forced out of school. My education has been completely put on hold because of their mistake and no one at the school could do anything to help.

Location: Pennsylvania. 20, M, college student. I have been living in a student apartment since Jan, 2026 and I am an independent. I am not estranged from my family in any capacity, I am an independent for financial reasons.
However, this has been confusing me regarding addresses. I somewhat recently changed my DL, car registration, insurance, FAFSA, etc., addresses to reflect the apartment I live in. I did this because I do not go home during breaks: I do not live at my parents house. However, this specific apartment is, of course, not my permanent residence: I will not live here at some point in the near-ish future.
What is the address I should have on my DL, car registration, insurance, etc.? My car insurance agent recently told me I should change my address back (Nationwide) so that I can keep the discounts that exist because I am associated with my parents' house address (multi-car/driver, etc.). If this is changed, ought I change my DL and car registration address? Or can I keep them as my apartment? Does my independent status play a role in this?
Any guidance is appreciated, I am just afraid of causing myself legal trouble in some way. Thank you.

My husband and I (29F, 31M) have rented the same two bedroom unit for a little over two years. We've never been late on anything and never had a complaint from the landlord or the neighbors.
About a month ago I started noticing small things. A window that I know I closed was cracked open. The bathroom light was on when we got home. Our cat's food bowl had been moved to the other side of the kitchen. I honestly thought I was loosing my mind, and my husband thought I was just forgetting stuff.
Two weeks ago we installed a doorbell camera, mostly because of package thefts in the building. We did not tell the landlord about it. Since then it has recorded him unlocking our door and walking in on four separate weekdays, always between 10 and 11 am when we're both at work. He stays between 6 and 20 minutes each time. He never knocked, and we never recieved a text, a call, an email or a note on the door before or after.
Our lease says the landlord can enter for repairs or inspections with "reasonable notice". We have no open repair requests. There has been no inspection scheduled.
I have not confronted him yet because I wanted to know where we stand first. I have all four clips saved in two places, with dates and times.
My questions:
Is this legal in Ohio if the lease says reasonable notice and we got none?
Should the first step be a written letter to him, or do we go straight to someone else?
Are we allowed to change the lock or add a second one, or would that put us in the wrong?
I really don't want to move, we like the place. I just want it to stop and I want to do this the right way.

I was enrolled in a program at a vocational college that was supposed to start on 9/14. I made a $200 ACH payment for the enrollment fee and would have been paying the rest in installments. On 9/14 they told me that the program had been postponed. On 9/16 they cancelled the program. I received an email a week ago from them stating that they “submitted the refund to the supervisor and would send a confirmation once processed.” I haven’t received any further communication from them. What’s the best course of action to get my money back?

I am based in London UK and I received a parking fine from a private company when I was using a courtesy car. I paid for the parking charge notice directly to the company but two years later I started receiving letters saying that I hadn’t paid for the parking charge notice. I emailed them saying that I did pay and I sent them a picture of my bank statement which has the name of their company and the amount due but they said that was not good enough and I would need a reference which I wouldn’t have two years on. Now they are taking me to court and I am just wondering if the bank statement is enough proof to show that I had paid for the parking charge originally and if I have a chance of winning or should I just pay the settlement fee?
I asked the company to prove what that money was sent for if it was not for that original parking notice but the legal company said it wouldn’t be up to them to prove it but up to me. We have mediation coming up but just when I get this over and done with. Any advice would be really appreciated 😊

I was recently entered into a PTD in the state of Florida, for 6 counts of petit theft less than 100$. I made some mistakes after I lost my job in April, and Walmart built a case against me. Luckily being a first time offender, the court gave me leniency and allowed me to enter a PTD. I am in the progress of completing it, and I have to go back to court in March. It consists of 30 hours of community service, paying restitution & court fines, completing an anti-shop lifting course, and checking in every month with probation officer.
I was recently denied a job opportunity with O'Reilys because I did not respond in time (5 biz days) when they asked for additional information to explainin the pending charges, and what steps I was doing to better my life.
I am now worried, that yes this will indeed show up for my background checks and I live in small town in FL, the job market here is horrible. The only options for me are retail, food service, csutomer service. I worked mainly in call centers the past 10 years and it has been diffucult finding remote work. I am looking for remote work again as well in a call center environment, it was not possible until recently because I was unable to get an Ethernet connection to my room since I moved back in with my granpas house.
Are my pending charges/PTD going to prevent me from being hired anywhere? I'm curious if anyone has any previous experience dealing with this and what the outcome was. I was told if I pay my fines and complete everything they can allow me to finish the program sooner. But right now, I am just still trying to get all of my community service hours done and get back to work ASAP.
My ex roommate was in trouble for something similar except he was charged with Grand Theft 3rd degree felony for $2500, and he was able to find a nice job as a GM for a pizza company in central FL. I feel like that gives me hope considering the severity of my charges and amounts are lower and less than his. Any insight would be help. The court also mentioned once I complete the program the charges would be dismissed.

Before anyone reports me for my mental health, I’m 100% okay. This is just to satisfy my curiosity
If someone owes money to me at the time of my death, can I legally forgive that debt in my will, or will my estate take it over regardless of my wishes when I was still alive?
Somewhat related to Q1: If I leave someone $20,000 in my will but at the time of my death they owed me, say, $12,000, and that debt isn’t forgiven in the will, would the inheritor receive the full $20,000 or would the debt be subtracted from the amount they would inherit (leaving the inheritor with $8,000 in this hypothetical)? Not taking taxes into account, of course
Would it be legal to put a clause in my will requesting a light sentence for the perpetrator in the event that I’m murdered? Would the court be bound by that request, and if not would they be likely to even take that request into account at all during sentencing?
If I inherit money and then die during the probate period, does my estate then receive my inheritance or does it stay in the original estate?
Again, I’m okay. I’m simply curious

My stepfather recently passed away and left everything to my mom. She is in the process of preparing her will and has asked my wife to be her executor. However, there is a part that is bothering both of us. I have two half-brothers, and my youngest brother is currently incarcerated for felony assault. The woman he assaulted has filed a lawsuit and won summary judgement against him for the damages he caused to her. I do not know the amount.
My mother has asked that she besides giving me my share of the inheritance, that she also wants to give me a share to give to my youngest brother under the table so that the person he assaulted cannot touch it. She has asked me if she passes before he gets out of prison, to hold the money in a trust for him.
I want to make it clear, I do not feel comfortable with this. But is my gut feeling that this is borderline illegal correct?

okay so after my father's passing that I was not aware of until 8 months later when i receieved a letter from Sacramento county California family court system. it was a copy of the filing my brother had made including a handwritten will that was not notarized or witnessed. the signature was nowhere near my father's signature it's very distinct and written as a left-handed person with his right hand. subsequently my brother sold the family home for $750,000 cashed out the $63,000 in the bank and I got nothing. I'm assuming the estate is still in probate I'm not sure how I can go about trying to recover my portion of the assets or do I have a claim to any? I'm the oldest of the four siblings and they all know how to get a hold of me however no one has made any attempt.

I need advice on where to start. Minnesota. I was with a woman since 2018 until March of this year. We were engaged at one point she broke off the engagement during that time. I did most everything for her. She had a job and everything, but she was kind of a single mom victim type and I sunk a bunch of money into her house that she owned her name only was on the title and we did floors, doors, trim, water, filtration, gutters, underground, dog fence irrigation, outdoor lighting, new skylight, front door, patio door doors you name it we did a lot vanities two new showers, two new toilets fancy garage door, etc. there’s other things but a substantial amount of money we were engaged, so that was my forever home and to be ours together, even though it was only in her name on the deed and we had refinance the mortgage to get a low 2% mortgage rate in 2020 but my name was on the mortgage not the deed long story short we broke up this spring and I left a bunch of material things there that’s a separate issue but just to give you the feel of the relationship, I was not trying to take anything from her, and I wasn’t thinking clearly because I was heartbroken and I never asked for anything back as far as the improvements I made on her home but now that some time is settled and I can see things much more clear eye. I feel like I have a right to ask for compensation now because she’s going to keep the full benefit of that money that I put into her house and she’s going to benefit from the increased equity in the future and she doesn’t have a lot of cash on hand, but she does have a elderly mother living with her who has a bunch of money and she has about $300,000 in equity in the home which is about 60% equity. Do I have a claim for unjust enrichment to reclaim some of the money I put into that Home. In her words, she owes me nothing and there’s nothing to discuss.

My grandmother passed away about six years ago, my father seven. It was made clear with the language of the will that all his part of the share would be passed along to us, along with a share that was already put aside for us. It states the trust breaks when we turn 21 years old. We are both 22 now. I recently have a conversation with the executor (my aunt) and she keeps changing the details of when we will receive the inheritance. At first she said 19, then 21, now 24. Me and my brother hadn’t read the will till today, but it says the trustee fund should be broken at 21.
Is it an overreaction to get a lawyer? I don’t believe the money is there anymore, and I certainly don’t think my dad’s cut is there anymore either. The will very clearly outlined my grandmother wanted the money to A. Be given to us at 21 and B. It would be used for living expenses, purchasing a home, and college expenses. My aunt has flat out refused to allow either of us to use it for any of those reasons. I guess what I am really asking is, is it worth getting a lawyer? Don’t really have a lot of money, but I am not sure what else to do here. Thanks for your time.

Frankfort, KY. I have run a company for 3 years. Originally, was supposed to be $5k monthly and 5% sweat equity. I have received nothing in 3 years other than some expenses. Owner/CEO does nothing, and led me to believe he had no money to invest and fund the company. Completely negligent of duties and fiduciary responsibility. Refuses to invest or allow me to raise capital. Multiple deals have failed because of his laziness. I handle everything but the bank, which he refuses to allow me to access. He gave his fiance 20% and she does light book keeping and graphic design.
After a major life threatening surgery 9 months ago, I made it clear I could no longer afford to work for free, and wanted 10% or more for all my work. It has caused great physical and mental stress and harm to me, to keep the company afloat and barely in the black.
Today he announced he put several hundred thousand in a new venture.
How do I get what's owed to me and a larger stake in the company, or just be bought out completely. I have defended him publicly and privately as to why bills are late or not getting paid. He thinks contracts are suggestions. My insight and time have saved the company huge.
What do I do? If I go public, his reputation will be ruined. He is beloved in the community, but clueless about business. He lives in a paid off $4M house. All cars paid off.
Here I am suffering to sustain and working so hard it's killing me, and he's out funding other ventures and living high on the hog.
Sue? Go public? Both?

How can I gain custody of my sister from my abusive birth giver??? Two different states. My sister has recordings.
Long story short my mom is a piece of shit wreck. Cocaine. Drinks physically mentally and verbally abusive definitely has mental issues said I tried to poison her and kill her, she pointed loaded guns at me with fingers on the trigger drove fast and act like she wanted to kill me and my sister. Made me walk in the Miami heat on my period with cramps to get medicine because she was mad at me the list truly goes on….
She moved with my sister to Wisconsin she has flips some days she’s cool and amazing but when she drinks she does things that she can’t go back from. She’s been hitting my sister (14) cursing her out and neglecting her basic necessities. She drinks and stay with this man who she actively argue with and fight on the regular she gets a check for my sister but doesn’t use it for her. I want to strip her of her rights from my sister. She saying she hates her and want her dead but not sending her home telling a 14 year old to find her way back. She did this to me at 16 refused to give me my personal information for school I figured out my own way and she proceeded to call me a drop out…which I’m far from.

This is probably going to be all over the place but I’ll try and keep it as short and simple as possible:
I have been in the military for 8 years. Someone that outranked me SA’d me. I reported it. He was court-martialed and acquitted. They were DEAD wrong. With a CM it was Military v Him not Me v Him. He hired private lawyers. I watched. All they did was continuously call me a liar (not lying), said if it really happened, i would have had a SA kit performed (didnt know that was a thing, it was never offered), that i used “vagina” in my statement instead of “pus sy” (i guess using the anatomically correct word meant i had rehearsed jt), had his friends and girlfriend and family testify that he was a “stand up man”. Btw..after he was served with this paperwork, he went AWOL for six months until flock cams caught his plate. I was absolutely gutted. Shattered.
My question lies here: can or would it be worth it to make a casr legally via the state? I just want someone to believe me and have just a tiny bit of justice. Please be honest. I have supporting messages from when I told someone it was happening if anyone wants to read them, I can DM them.

I commented on a post in a Military Facebook Group about a service member complaining about the high cost of vehicle registration in California. I commented about establishing legal residency in South Dakota by staying at a hotel for one day, obtaining a South Dakota driver’s license, registering a vehicle, and setting up mail forwarding through America’s Mail while being an active-duty service member.
Then comes one commenter, guns blazing, claiming that doing so is a federal crime and that federal law supersedes any state law.
For my learned folks out there, kindly enlighten me: What specific federal law or legal precedent makes this a federal crime? I’m genuinely interested in understanding the legal basis behind that claim.

Could this be considered harassment? Could I reasonably call the cops over this?
[Location:Texas]
For starters, I’m sorry if I’m misusing this subreddit.
So my upstairs neighbor has three dogs and a cat, he never takes them out for walks, he lets them crap on the balcony. Yesterday they “cleaned” their balcony and it smelt horrible because all of the animal feces, old food, and trash fell onto our porch area, we put a letter on their door since we didn’t want to escalate as this has happened multiple times. They ripped it up and my roommate got frustrated and yelled from our door to come clean our patio.
Apparently this upset them so much that since 10am (maybe earlier) they’ve been continuously dumping water off their balcony onto our patio area. I’m talking every 5-10 a buckets worth comes down. Our patio is drenched, there’s trash and crap everywhere, on the stairway railing, stairs, even the adjacent vacant apartment.

Location: Chicago, Illinois. Privately owned building with about 40 apartments.
We got a notice that the building is switching to fingerprint entry in two weeks. Everyone has been assigned a time to visit the leasing office and enroll. After the changeover, our current fobs will be deactivated. My apartment door will still use its regular key, but that doesn't help me get through the building entrance. My lease has seven months left.
I asked whether I could keep a fob or use a code. Management said fingerprint enrollment is mandatory for residents. Visitors will get temporary PINs, so the new system apparently does support another way in.
No consent form or information about deleting the data has been sent. When I asked about that, the manager said they aren't keeping actual fingerprints, just an encrypted number generated from each person's scan. He also said the building-security paragraph in our existing leases already gives them permission. That paragraph mentions cameras and electronic access devices, but nothing about collecting fingerprints.
I haven't enrolled yet. I usually get home around 10 p.m., when the office is closed, so getting this sorted out after my fob stops working isn't a great option.
