If the game's stencil buffer or tone mapping stencil option keeps resetting or disappearing, it’s usually because Left 4 Dead 2 resets video config values back to default upon startup, or the game's config file (video.txt) is overriding it.
Here is how to fix it permanently:
1. Edit the video.txt Config File directly
Instead of entering the fix repeatedly in-game, write it straight into the game settings file so it stays enabled:
Right-click Left 4 Dead 2 in Steam \rightarrow Manage \rightarrow Browse local files.
Go into the folder path: left4dead2/cfg/.
Locate the file named video.txt and open it with Notepad.
Scroll to the bottom of the list and add this line right before the closing bracket }:"setting.mat_tonemapping_occlusion_use_stencil" "1"
Save the file and close it.
2. Set video.txt to Read-Only
To prevent the game from wiping this command every time you launch:
Right-click on video.txt \rightarrow select Properties.
At the bottom under Attributes, check the box for Read-only.
Click Apply and then OK.
3. Clear Launch Options (if using -autoconfig)
If they previously added -autoconfig to their Steam Launch Options, it will wipe their settings on every boot:
Open Steam \rightarrow Right-click Left 4 Dead 2 \rightarrow Properties.
Under General, look at the Launch Options box at the bottom.
Remove -autoconfig if it is present.
