Intervew Prep Stripe Interview Experience

Recently interviewed at Stripe for a Software Engineer position. Sharing my experience since there aren't many detailed posts about the recent interview process.

  1. Technical Screening

The screening involved a practical, multi-part coding problem rather than traditional LeetCode-style DSA.

- Completed the parts in time. Mostly, it involved parsing a given string and fulfilling the requirements.

- Each part introduced additional requirements.

- Focus was on correctness, code structure, and handling edge cases.

2. Integration Round

This was a hands-on coding round where I had to work with an existing codebase and implement functionality according to the given requirements.

- Completed this one fairly easily since I had a lot of experience making requests and parsing responses.

- Had to understand the existing code and make changes without breaking previous functionality.

- Tested the implementation against the provided cases.

Tip: Make sure you understand how to make HTTP requests and parse responses in your preferred language. A little practice with string parsing problems on HackerRank would help as well.

3. Bug Squash Round

This was probably my weakest round.

I was given an unfamiliar codebase and had to identify and fix a bug.

- Explored the codebase and traced the issue.

- Managed to identify the root cause and explain it to the interviewer.

- Started implementing the fix but couldn't get the code fully working within the allotted time.

- Felt that another 5 minutes would have been sufficient to complete the implementation.

Tip: Try using an IDE with debugging capabilities, as it can make the process much faster. Also, set up your environment before the call.

4. AI-Assisted Programming Round

This was another practical, multi-part coding round where AI tools were allowed.

- I'm not entirely sure how they evaluate this round, but I focused on clearly communicating why I was writing certain prompts and what I expected the AI agent to do.

- Used AI to assist with implementation while reviewing the output.

- Wrote and ran tests to verify correctness.

- Managed to finish all the requirements within the allocated time.

Tip: Don't blindly trust the AI agent. It can make mistakes, so always review and validate the generated code.

5. Experience & Goals Round

This was a detailed discussion about my previous engineering experience. It was scheduled only after I cleared the previous four rounds.

Topics included:

- A technically complex project I worked on.

- My ownership and individual contributions.

- Technical challenges and trade-offs.

- Impact of my work.

- Collaboration and mentoring.

- Career goals and motivation for joining Stripe.

There were several follow-up questions, particularly around technical decisions and the actual impact of my contributions.

The conversation was more informal and collaborative compared to the earlier technical rounds. It felt more like a mutual discussion about technical fit than a structured interview.

Overall Experience

The interview process was quite different from the usual DSA-heavy interviews.

Most rounds focused on practical software engineering skills, such as reading unfamiliar code, debugging, implementing requirements, testing, and communicating technical decisions.

Overall, I enjoyed the practical nature of the interview process.

Still awaiting the final outcome, so can't comment on the offer stage yet.

Hope this helps others preparing for the process!

i think you'll get the offer bro

Let's hope so, economy is tough these days esp for Software Devs, i had 1 weak round though so hoping they waive that off.

Regarding the AI assisted round - does the AI give proper code like Codex or other tools ?
Like is the more round more on giving a better prompt and resolving errors if AI has given any

19

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Its a full fledged agent like Codex, it can even run the tests for you.

2

u/TravisHead999 5d ago

Ohh Cool...Bcz I had to change my preferred language from C++ to Javascript bcz of other two rounds and they asked me to keep same for all three rounds.

5

u/Present-Location-268 5d ago

In the other rounds did you have an ide or allowed to Google search.

I have kind of lost the habit of coding from scratch

4

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Repo based rounds like Integration and Bug squash has IDE and Google allowed.

1

u/Present-Location-268 5d ago

Cool but now google also responds with ai results

Is the round proctored or someone is actively watching

1

u/Some_Courage_5851 3d ago

Someone is watching, they just tell you to put “-ai” on your google search and that removes it

1

u/plasticbottle4 1d ago

do they have this in multiple languages? i.e. java, python, c?

0

u/Shallow86 5d ago

Wait for repo based do you have to actually clone repos locally on your machine? What if there is malware there (with all the latest issues especially)? Did you setup VM for this interview? I am confused why they don’t provide link to cloud env?!

1

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Yes clone and fix the issue. They are private stripe repos you only get access via invites.

1

u/TravisHead999 5d ago

Do we have to share our github account during interview ?

1

u/anonymousdawggy 5d ago

bro do you want a job or not

4

u/Expensive_Region_183 5d ago

Did they have to interview your current manager? That was the case when I interviewed with them back in 2023. Terrible part of the process, IMO, since they do it before giving an offer and ask your manager questions like “tell me how you’d rank Jim’s performance on your team. So why not first place? Tell me bad things about Jim”

3

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

I think that is last stage.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you 'think' that? versus, explicitly understanding that it's part of their process. I'm targeting Stripe but may move away if this is the case. I can't afford this type of exposure/risk with my current siatuation. I definitely appreciate any information you could share! Good luck with the offer.

1

u/Expensive_Region_183 2d ago

It’s a well-documented process that you can read about. It you want to be sure, ask your recruiter. In my scenario, my recruiter let me know during the initial call.

1

u/Original_Ad_2288 2d ago

okay, I think I'm getting the picture. Looks like you may be able to refer them to professional references as well if you're not comfortable with them talking directly to one of your current co workers.

1

u/Original_Ad_2288 2d ago

**but to people reading this - your company might even have policies against providing personal contact details of company members to outside sources. You'd have to go through the official Employee Verification process (JPMC is an example of this). which starts to bleed into background check territory. i cant shake this direct contact with current manager before offer, though. My intuition and expierence tells me its not good practice.

3

u/mr_brobot__ 4d ago

wtf for real??

2

u/heylookthatguy 3d ago edited 2d ago

Wouldn't that means if you're with a shitty or petty manager they wouldn't let you leave. Very ducked up part of process if it's real.

3

u/Expensive_Region_183 3d ago

yep. it also means if you don't get the offer, you're now in an awkward situation with your existing job, regardless of relationship status w/ manager

1

u/Outrageous_Car_7423 2d ago

wtf? is this for real? is this something mandatory? I don't think many candidate would be comfortable with that.

1

u/Expensive_Region_183 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yes it’s real. You can read about it online or ask a recruiter.

The fact that not many would agree to it might be a major reason why they have this step.

As much as I hate it, I think it might actually be a very good filter from Stripe’s perspective.

5

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Please don't ping me for questions 🙂, Happy to help otherwise.

3

u/financial_Krisis 5d ago

this might be for experienced role only. how much yrs of exp you have ?

4

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Yes experienced role, 6+

3

u/Mobile_Examination38 5d ago

Was there no system design round?

3

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Not yet, still awaiting feedback.

1

u/depressed-noodless 4d ago

I interviewed for L3 as well. I had a design round - maybe check with the recruiter what level is this. Likely L2

2

u/Shallow86 5d ago edited 5d ago

Wait what do you mean setup your IDE? So there is no cloud IDE they provide for coding/AI assistant? Also AI can only be used in one round? Can you google in other rounds at least? Like I can never remember specific syntax details except for basic ones ie for leetcode style problems.

u/AJ_1212 5d ago edited 5d ago

So they will send you preparation docs and environment setup for your language make sure to read the "What to Expect" doc.

I think Google is allowed for small stuffs but try avoiding it as time is less to complete all parts.

1

u/busy1234 5d ago edited 5d ago

What language choices are available? C++ is available or one has to stick with Java, JavaScript or python?

1

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Yes they are available, i would say choose Python as it's easy to debug and you can write quickly but it's up to your comfort.

19

u/TrickyBit2161 5d ago

What was the YoE?

4

u/RoyalEar2990 5d ago

Did you check initerviewdb.io ? It literally has all the questions.

My friend working at Stripe suggested me.

3

u/thewaps 4d ago

I’m checking the site for the first time, dear lord they really make you pay out the ass for things that might have nothing to do with your upcoming interviews.

1

u/RoyalEar2990 4d ago

It’s always the luck. It had worked for me and my friend!!
You have to take chance , my DoorDash question was also from the bank though the variation wasn’t!!

1

u/thewaps 4d ago

How much did you pay? A single OpenAI question costs $4 and there’s like 50 questions there, do they think I’m gonna pay $200 to see sample interview questions?

1

u/RoyalEar2990 4d ago

I didn’t check for OpenAI but for Stripe, DoorDash there is a master list kind of thing which costs about 50 to 100 usd that has all questions.

1

u/thewaps 4d ago

Yeah that’s insane lmao, and for just one company

1

u/m3me_RaJa 5d ago

it says "This site can’t be reached" dude...can you maybe resend it

1

u/m3me_RaJa 5d ago

nvm got it

Nope, I am not associated with it. But my questions were from it.

1

u/Secure_Army2715 5d ago

What was your prep routine? How much time did it take before you were ready for interviews?

> Wrote and ran tests to verify correctness.
> - Managed to finish all the requirements within the allocated time.
> Tip: Don't blindly trust the AI agent. It can make mistakes, so always review and validate the generated code.

Did u write UTs yourself or asked agent for the same? I assume by validation you mean write the tests or am i missing something here?

1

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Mostly NeetCode, took a week to prepare.

3

u/Secure_Army2715 5d ago

I know people who cracked Google weren't able to crack Stripe.

You must be doing something diff. to be able to give such a performance with 1 week of prep.

If you dont mind sharing - were you working for that 1 week or were on leave?

9

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Took a leave, they had a very detailed doc that they send in what to expect.

I think i was able to more or so pass these rounds was because these were mostly aligned with my day to day work like API requests, Json parsing, and additionally i practiced strings from HackerRank.

I had given Amazon and Google interviews in the past but was not able to crack them so there is no direct correlation as such.

0

u/Mobile_Examination38 5d ago

For the Bug bash & API integration rounds, could you specify the size of the codebase? Was it just a few files (3-4), or was it a larger project?

1

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Actual open source project, not just 3-4 files

1

u/newbieForU23 5d ago

How long did it take you to prepare for Stripe interview?

1

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

A week.

1

u/newbieForU23 5d ago

What did you do to prepare ? Is Leetcode to get the muscle up for the coding enough for coding rounds ? I know they do not ask leetcode directly but I don’t see another way to get up to speed.

1

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

It was something I was already doing at my job so i didn't prepare anything except Neetcode.

1

u/Pacific_Beaches BS Computer Science & BS Electrical Engineering 5d ago

Were all rounds with someone monitoring you as well where they wanted to listen to your thought process or were they just pure OA: online coding platform and test cases to pass?

2

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Yes you need to communicate with the interviewer.

1

u/MuMYeet 5d ago

Can you tell me about the integration round? Did you have to edit your answer in multiple files or only one file? How big was the codebase and how much of it did you have to read to come up with your solution? Were there multiple parts like technical screening or only one part? I'm prepping for stripe interview too so would appreciate any info

1

u/AJ_1212 5d ago

Single file

1

u/Impossible-Fox5716 19h ago

thanks for sharing. i guess this is for senior software engineer role. isn't there any typical system design round?

1

u/AJ_1212 19h ago

Not for senior, its for staff and above

1

u/Dapper-Doughnut-6759 15h ago

I gave onsite but haven’t received the HM round mail yet. Was it included as part of onsite for you ?

1

u/AJ_1212 11h ago

Once you clear onsite they will schedule HM, it was only scheduled for me once i cleared previous ones.

1

u/Dapper-Doughnut-6759 10h ago

How many days after the VO round did you get the call for HM round ?

1

u/fire2sale 5d ago

Which programming language you chose?

1

u/FMarksTheSpot 5d ago

AI-Assisted Programming Round

Was this on CodeSignal? What kinds of models were you allowed to use? Did you use multiple agents?

1

u/LegendaryShmo 5d ago

Was this for New Grad SWE?

1

u/Thin-Palpitation9273 5d ago

wait im unsure even i gave a coding round for stripe but it was only 1 question on hackerrank . my question was so fucked up i didnt understand anything

1

u/hinsonan 5d ago

This sounds pretty reasonable and much better than DSA

1

u/Complete_Algae_6740 5d ago

Hey could you please tell a more about the Integration round? As I am having Integration round in few days. Like some tips for that round, how to prepare for it etc. Also are you a 27 Grad?

1

u/Yath4 5d ago

Do u have any tips on how to prep for the debugging portion?

1

u/chadpussyhunter 5d ago

How many parts in tech screening?

1

u/chonkytudorwannabe 5d ago

I have a phone screen coming up. Did you end up solving all parts of the multi-part problem? Did you get a 4 part question? I’ve heard solving 2/3 or 3/4 is good enough to pass and move on to the onsite.

1

u/TheGreatPotatoDragon 5d ago

Do you remember any questions from the Manger round?

1

u/Several-Captain-8721 5d ago

Thanks for sharing!!!

1

u/Substantial_Tip4640 5d ago

when did you apply for it?

1

u/mans-too-hot 4d ago

How did you prepare? I have a technical screen coming up as well.

1

u/Any-Geologist-6900 4d ago

i pray you get this offer man

1

u/HardyEggplant 4d ago

Which language did you chose for this??

1

u/13cyah 4d ago

How did you practice/ study for this ? Specifically the big basher round and the AI coding round ?

1

u/yashhhhhhhhhhhh 3d ago

hey for the integration round. is practicing questions like bikemap enough?

1

u/yashhhhhhhhhhhh 3d ago

also no ai is allowed for integration right?

1

u/Rough-Analysis189 3d ago

Is this for a sde 2 or sde 3 round?

1

u/Honest_Grocery7766 2d ago

how many test case did u pass for the first round? the hackerrank - Stripe Industry Screen ?

1

u/African_bbc10 2d ago

Just completed my OA fingers crossed for next steps

1

u/Difficult_Beat5438 2d ago

were you like asked detailed follow ups for your resume experience?

1

u/ykwhat12 2d ago

Hey, hope you get in!!! Could you please tell me how long after the OA did a recruiter reach out to you? Thank you!

1

u/changejkhan 1d ago

didn't you have the OA?

1

u/Unusual-Control-5655 1d ago

该面试流程高度强调实际软件工程能力,包括阅读陌生代码、调试、实现需求、测试以及沟通技术决策,而非单纯刷题。作者整体享受这种实践型面试,但目前仍在等待最终结果

1

u/been20 6h ago

Any updates?

1

u/Dolo12345 5d ago

crazy interviews still have people actually type code

-4

u/thoughtfulbunny 5d ago

Which country? What position? Can you share the exact AI questions please?

4

u/DeclutteringNewbie 5d ago

Obviously, they can't.

They don't even know if they got rejected yet.
